It’s a Young-Man’s Game

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Older vs. Younger – the “age old” dilemma. A man who is 90 years old thinks hard and says, “Ah, would that I were only 80 years old,” according to French author Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle (1657–1757) who wrote it down in French, of course.

Taking it a step further, a man 60 years old, wishes he were 20 or 30 years younger, especially reliving life with all he’s learned to appreciate during that time. Whatever it is to dream of – maybe 10 years younger, 20 years, 25 years?

Personally, I wish I were Cameron Young. Or, at the least, I wish I had Young’s golf game on Sunday. Young closed like a freight train, as they say in the horse racing world, chasing down a very good (68) Matt Fitzpatrick to take The PLAYERS Championship by one stroke.

Cameron Young (1st/-13), 28-year-old, earned his second win on TOUR in his 104th start (2025 Wyndham Championship);. It was his second win in his last 11 starts after going winless in his first 93 starts on TOUR, notching seven runner-up finishes during that span.

Young earned his third consecutive Top-10 finish of the 2026 season (T7/The Genesis Invitational, T3/Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard), his second streak of three consecutive Top-10s on TOUR (T3/2022 RBC Heritage, T2/2022 TruistChampionship, T3/2022 PGA Championship).

Young earned 750 FedExCup points and moves from No. 12 to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, his highest rank after any week in his TOUR career. His four-stroke comeback matched the fifth-largest final-round comeback in PLAYERS Championship history and matched the largest comeback of the 2026 season on TOUR (4/Chris Gotterup/2026 WM Phoenix Open).

In four previous appearances at THE PLAYERS Championship, he finished MC (2022), T51 (2023), T54 (2024) and T61 (2025).

Moving Day at The PLAYERS ’26

CUT: The PLAYERS 36-hole cut advanced 73 professionals at 2-over (146) from a field of 123 professionals.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Ludvig Åberg (1st/-12) Friday round of (63) marked the second-lowest 18-hole score in PLAYERS history, with the lowest being a (62) by Justin Thomas/2025/R2, Tom Hoge/2023/R3).

Åberg holds his sixth career 36-hole lead/co-lead on TOUR and is 1-for-5 converting to victory (2023 RSM Classic). The last player to hold the

36- hole lead/co-lead at THE PLAYERS and go on to win was Rory McIlroy in 2019.

Åberg is now the third player to post 29 on the front nine at TPC Sawgrass, joining Dustin Johnson/2022/R4, Martin Kaymer/2014/R1), and Åberg joined Derek Fathauer (2015/R1) as the only two players to post 5-under on Nos. 1-4 at TPC Sawgrass.

Xander Schauffele (2nd/-10) shot (65) and it matches his low 18-hole score in 24 career rounds at THE PLAYERS Championship (R1, R3/2024). He carded eight birdies in a round to mark the most in his career at TPC Sawgrass (previous: 7; R1, R3/2024).

Two-time PLAYERS Champion (2023, 2024) and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (T51/+1) extended his longest active cuts made streak on TOUR to 70.

PGA Tour: Round 1 at The PLAYERS

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Maverick McNealy, Lee Hodges, Sahith Theegala and Sepp Straka formed a tie for the lead in Thursday’s weather-hit opening round of The Players Championship when play was suspended in fading light.

Surprise package Austin Smotherman, one of four players yet to complete the opening round, has a chance to seize the outright lead when play resumes on Friday as he faces a 15-foot birdie putt on his final hole — the par-5 ninth.

Smotherman was at 5 under after mixing four birdies with a lone bogey on his back nine, but he regretted playing a chip shot from 40 yards out before deciding to mark his ball on the green and return the following morning to complete his round.

“It was just getting so dark,” said Smotherman, a three-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour who was a runner-up at last month’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. “Greens are getting — I mean, the rain softened them enough to where spike marks, footprints, all that stuff’s kind of adding up.

“So a 15-, 16-footer, whatever I have. I mean, it’s not worth it right now (and he will) get fresh greens in the morning, which is the benefit of that. Do I wish I hit the chip in the morning as well? Went back and forth. The fact I was even questioning it, I probably should have maybe backed off.”

McNealy, Hodges, Theegala and Straka fired matching 5-under-par 67s on a day of mixed weather conditions at TPC Sawgrass, where the course was relatively firm in the morning before being softened by early afternoon thunderstorms.

Former world No. 1 amateur McNealy, who teed off in the morning wave, reeled off five birdies in his first 12 holes on his way to an early one-shot lead. He was then caught late in the day by fellow American Hodges, who birdied two of his last three holes, and Austrian Straka, who eagled the par-5 16th with a chip-in from 50 feet.

“It was a very straightforward chip,” said Straka, who has won four times on the PGA Tour with his most recent victory coming at last year’s Truist Championship. “It was just off the green, upslope in the first cut. It was about as easy as they come, and I was able to take advantage of it.”

American Theegala made it a four-way tie at the top after covering his back nine in 3 under, highlighted by a hole-out eagle at the par-4 12th where he hit a stunning 99-yard approach from the right fairway, his ball bouncing sharply to the left off the fringe before disappearing into the cup.

“I hit it a little skinny and just came out a little right,” said Theegala, whose only PGA Tour victory came at the 2023 Fortinet Championship. “Got a nice bounce … it was probably going to spin left off that slope, was probably going to go like 20, 25 feet down that slope, just straight left of the hole. So for it to crash into the pin and go in is pretty cool. It’s a nice bonus.”

World No. 6 Russell Henley and fellow American Justin Thomas, who won this event in 2021 and is making his second PGA Tour start of the year after undergoing back surgery in November, were among a group of four players who opened with 68s on a tightly bunched leaderboard.

Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, bidding for a rare third victory at The Players Championship, produced a mixed bag as he opened with an even-par 72. He birdied his final hole, the par-5 ninth, following consecutive bogeys.

“I did some good things, changing weather out there, but overall I felt like I gave away some shots,” said Scheffler, who clinched his 20th career victory on the PGA Tour at The American Express in January. “Hoping to clean it up a little bit the next few days.

“It can get very challenging when you get some high winds like we had this morning. It can get even more challenging when you’re playing from the rough, which I felt like I was doing a bit too much of today … I struck it better on the back nine. Just made a few mental errors and just need to be a little bit sharper the next few days.”

World No. 2 and defending champion Rory McIlroy, looking to shrug off a back injury that led to his withdrawal from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, experienced a frustrating day as he battled to a 74. Often wayward off the tee, he mixed three bogeys with a lone birdie to finish seven strokes off the pace.

“I would say the most discomfort was like when the ball was below my feet or with chipping,” McIlroy replied when asked if his back had posed any problems. “Just like getting down a little bit to it. Honestly, overall it was fine. Got a little bit tired at the end of the day, but yeah, it was actually all pretty good.”

The elite Players Championship field is one of the strongest in the game with the top 10 golfers in the world rankings — and 47 of the top 50 — assembled at TPC Sawgrass for the tournament’s 52nd edition.

However, World No. 4 Collin Morikawa withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury after playing just one hole on Thursday. After teeing off on the 10th hole and making a par, he experienced some discomfort while taking a practice swing on the 11th tee box.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – This year marks the 52nd playing of THE PLAYERS Championship, dating back to 1974. It’s the 44th at TPC Sawgrass with the first year of 1982. THE PLAYERS Championship is the first of five events this season that offer 750 FedExCup points to the winner.

THE PLAYERS is the third event in the Florida Swing, which began with the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches (won by Nico Echavarria) and continued with the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard in Orlando (won by Akshay Bhatia). The TOUR will make its way to Palm Harbor for the Valspar Championship next week, where Viktor Hovland will defend his 2025 title.

Akshay Bhatia won the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard for his third career PGA TOUR title and first since the 2024 Valero Texas Open. He’ll make his third PLAYERS appearance, finishing T3 in 2025.

Second-year TOUR member and University of Florida product Ricky Castillo won the Puerto Rico Open for his first career PGA TOUR title; was previously qualified for THE PLAYERS by virtue of his position in the FedExCup through the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Castillo missed the cut in his PLAYERS debut in 2025.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – The unofficial “fifth major” of the 2025 PGA Tour season kicks off on Thursday with the first round of The Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Contested on the famed Stadium Course, one of the year’s deepest fields will vie for one of the tour’s most coveted trophies. Can Scottie Scheffler create history by winning for a third consecutive year?

“The Players Championship is absolutely our busiest tournament outside of the majors and it’s no surprise that Scottie Scheffler is the clear favorite this week as he goes for his third consecutive win in this tournament,” BetMGM senior sports trader Matt Wall said.

PROP PICKS
–Michael Kim to Beat Jordan Spieth (-125 at DraftKings): Kim might be the hottest player few people are talking about with five consecutive finishes of T13 or better, including fourth at Bay Hill. His lone PGA Tour title to date came seven years ago at the John Deere, but we like him as a +6500 darkhorse to win this week. Spieth is making his fifth start in his return from wrist surgery and while he has posted a T4 and T9 against softer fields, he has a T69 and missed cut in two signature event starts. He failed to make the weekend here last year.

–Hideki Matsuyama Top 20 Finish (+125 at BetMGM): Matsuyama has four top-10s since 2015 at The Players, tied with Brian Harman for the most of any player in the field. While he has cooled off a bit since winning The Sentry to tee-off the year, he has posted a T13 and T22 in his past two starts, both at signature events, and tied for sixth year last year.

The PLAYERS: Crowded at Top of Leaderboard After Round 1

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) -World No. 2 Rory McIlroy and No. 6 Xander Schauffele shared the lead at 7-under par as the morning wave of the first round of The Players Championship was wrapping up Thursday.

Both took advantage of soft greens and light winds to card opening 65s at TPC Sawgrass, although they did it in distinctly different fashions.

McIlroy recorded 10 birdies, the most he has recorded in 41 career rounds at TPC Sawgrass. The Northern Irishman reached 8 under through 15 holes before finding the water left with his drive on the par-4 seventh hole, going on to record a double bogey.

McIlroy made up one of the strokes with a birdie on his final hole of the day at the par-5 ninth. Along with the 10 birdies and the double, he had a lone bogey and just six pars on his scorecard while finding the water twice.

“Much, much improved on the approach play today, which was nice to see,” McIlroy told reporters, adding that he chose to “grind” on the range rather than taking Monday off following a final-round 76 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “I needed to clean up the technique a little bit, needed to clean up some things. Honestly, just needed to put the time in.”

Schauffele’s bogey-less card was mundane by contrast with seven birdies and 11 pars. He was happy to be playing in the morning, with the wind starting to pick up as the afternoon wave teed off.

“I wouldn’t want to re-hit a few of those shots today, I can tell you that much,” Schauffele said. “I definitely need to clean it up.”

Canada’s Nick Taylor recorded six birdies in a bogey-free round to finish one stroke in back of McIlroy and Schauffele.

Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, who entered the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time this week, eagled two of the four par-5s en route to a 5-under 67 in his first round at The Players. He added a pair of birdies against a lone bogey.

New Zealand’s Ryan Fox hit the first hole-in-one of the week, recording just the 14th ace in the history of the event at the famed par-3 17th hole.

McIlroy downplayed what appeared to be a disagreement with playing partner Jordan Spieth about where McIlroy’s drive crossed into the water.

“I think Jordan was just trying to make sure that I was doing the right thing,” McIlroy said when asked if Spieth’s actions were needless. “I was pretty sure that my ball had crossed where I was sort of dropping it. It’s so hard, right, because there was no TV evidence. I was adamant. But I think, again, he was just trying to make sure that I was going to do the right thing.

“If anything, I was being conservative with it. I think at the end of the day we’re all trying to protect ourselves, protect the field, as well. I wouldn’t say it was needless. I think he was just trying to make sure that what happened was the right thing.”

Scheffler to Defend at PLAYERS

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler will begin his defense at The Players Championship paired alongside fellow Americans Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas for the first two rounds.

Coming off a dominating victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he beat the entire field by two strokes on Sunday, Scheffler is the first defending champion to arrive at TPC Sawgrass as the top-ranked player in the world since Rory McIlroy in 2020. The event was ultimately canceled that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scheffler will begin his quest for a repeat in the afternoon wave on Thursday, teeing off in at 1:40 p.m. ET in one of the marquee pairings released Monday. The trio will tee off at 8:35 a.m. on Friday. Fowler won the Players in 2015 while Thomas claimed the trophy three years ago.

Thursday’s afternoon wave will include other marquee groups comprised of defending U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark playing with fellow former champions Collin Morkikawa and Brian Harman, while young American stars Tony Finau and Will Zalatoris will play with former Open champion Shane Lowry.

McIlroy is coming off a disappointing Sunday at Bay Hill, where he stumbled to a final-round 76. Rather than grab his opportunity to reclaim the No. 1 ranking, McIlroy saw the distance between him and Scheffler grow further with a tie for 21st.

The 2019 champion finished T33 at last year’s Players. He will tee off at 8:35 a.m. on Thursday in a featured group along with Jordan Spieth and Norway’s Viktor Hovland.

Also teeing off in the morning wave of the opening round will be the group of Patrick Cantlay, 2004 Players champion Adam Scott and rising Swedish star Ludvig Aberg.

They will all be looking to get off to a fast start to put pressure on Scheffler, the +500 pre-tournament favorite at DraftKings and +550 favorite at BetMGM.

“Everybody, I guess, now is kind of looking up at me at the top of the rankings and trying to take me down, so in order to stay up there, you got to put in a lot of work,” Scheffler said on Sunday.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler won The PLAYERS Championship, earning his sixth career PGA Tour title overall and second of the season. All six of Scheffler’s victories have come in his last 27 starts.

Scheffler returned to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking with the victory as he became the ninth player to win The PLAYERS and the Masters Tournament and only the third to hold both titles at the same time, joining Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Tyrrell Hatton (2nd) birdied the final five holes and tied the back-nine scoring record at TPC Sawgrass (29).

Tom Hoge (T-3) became the first player to record a (78) or higher in the first round of a PGA Tour event and finish in the Top Five since Jose Maria Olazabal at the 2007 PLAYERS Championship.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Red hot Scottie Scheffler holds his seventh career 54-hole lead/co-lead on Tour with a (65). His career low at The PLAYERS provided him with a two shot lead going into today’s final round.

Min Woo Lee, currently trailing Scheffler but in the final pairing today, seeks to become the third player in tournament history to make The PLAYERS their first career Tour title.

Having missed five consecutive cuts entering the week, Cam Davis birdied Nos. 17 and 18 and sits solo third at 206 (-10).

Tom Hoge set a new course record at The PLAYERS Stadium Course with a 10-under (62).

Aaron Rai aced the par-3 17th hole, marking the first PLAYERS Championship with multiple aces at No. 17.

Third-round scoring average of 69.573 marks the lowest scoring average in any round in the history of The PLAYERS.

First Round at The PLAYERS

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – The 2021 FedEx Cup champion, Patrick Cantlay, has finished in the Top Five in each of his last two starts and is the only player to do so at the last two designated events (The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational). That stated, Cantlay missed the cut in each of the last three PLAYERS Championships and has not finished better than T22 (2017).

World No. 6 Xander Schauffele, who won three times on TOUR during the 2021-22 season, finished T2 at the 2018 PLAYERS Championship but has missed the cut in each of his three appearances since.

Max Homa, one of two players with multiple titles on TOUR this season (along with Jon Rahm), is making his third start at THE PLAYERS and is coming off a T-13 in 2022.

The 2021 PLAYERS Championship winner, Justin Thomas, holds a scoring average of 70.48 at THE PLAYERS, the lowest of any player with a minimum of 15 rounds played on record (1983-present). With a win, Thomas would become the seventh player to win multiple titles at THE PLAYERS and first to accomplish the feat since Tiger Woods in 2013. Thomas is the only player that won on the PGA TOUR in each season from 2015-16 through 2021-22 and can extend his streak to eight seasons with a win at THE PLAYERS.
