NYJ at NE: Somebody’s Got to Win

FOXBOROUGH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) A 1-6 start has New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo questioning his team’s toughness. Mayo believes there still is time to flip the script, though, and New England will have a chance to do just that when it faces the New York Jets on Sunday on the Pats’ home field in Massachusetts.

After an all-out disaster in London last weekend, the Patriots were called out by Mayo following a 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, with their first-year coach declaring them a “soft football team across the board.”

More conversations went on behind closed doors between Mayo and his players, and while he wouldn’t share exactly what was said, he is confident that New England will be playing inspired football against the Jets (2-5).

“We’re on to the Jets,” Mayo told reporters on Wednesday. “We’ve had those conversations. I’ve always looked at that as an opportunity to go out there and prove everyone wrong. Once again, going back to a chip on your shoulder, we’ve all had those chips on our shoulders at times that have gotten us through. So, this is no different.

The opening line was reminiscent of a line used by former coach Bill Belichick when the Patriots blew a game in their glory years and were next playing the Bengals at Cincinnati

“Obviously, once again, we are struggling as a team. Our record is what it is. It’s about what we can do to get better.”

New York also is out to turn things around after a 37-15 setback against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week pushed its losing streak to four games. Star wideout Davante Adams, acquired in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 15, was reunited with Jets signal-caller Aaron Rodgers, but he hauled in just three catches for 30 yards.

Mayo doesn’t think Adams will be nearly as quiet in his second game with New York.

“He’s a good player, obviously has a great rapport with the quarterback,” Mayo said of Adams. “I expect him to be more involved, even though he was involved the first game.”

Adams, now in his 11th NFL season, already considers himself a vital piece of the Jets’ offense and is willing to do anything he can to help New York get out of its funk.

“Regardless if I just got here, I’m a leader of this football team,” Adams said. “Whether or not every single person in there sees it that way, that’s how I see it and that’s my responsibility and that’s something I take seriously.”

There is a chance that Rodgers might not be throwing to him on Sunday, as knee and hamstring injuries limited the 40-year-old quarterback during practice on Wednesday.

Cornerback Michael Carter II (back), edge rusher Will McDonald IV (shoulder), linebacker Quincy Williams (neck) and offensive lineman Morgan Moses (knee) also were limited. Wide receiver Allen Lazard (chest) and safeties Tony Adams (hamstring) and Ashtyn Davis (concussion) were among those held out.

Linebacker Anfernee Jennings, who is working through shoulder and knee issues, was one of six Patriots who missed all of practice on Wednesday. Receiver Ja’Lynn Polk remained on the sideline because of a concussion.

New England had another six players who were limited, including safety Kyle Dugger (ankle).

The Jets and Patriots met back in Week 3, when New York cruised to a 24-3 victory ahead of its current four-game skid.

NFL: Sunday Night Football

New York Jets (2-4) at Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2), 8:20 p.m. ET

Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers are together again, as the longtime Packers’ teammates debut with the Jets at Pittsburgh in prime time with little time to waste. The week before acquiring Adams the Jets fired their head coach, and falling to 2-5 could prompt more changes. The Steelers made waves of their own by opening the door for Russell Wilson to claim the QB job this week in what head coach Mike Tomlin framed as a declaration of health for the former Broncos and Seahawks starter.

Justin Fields accepted responsibility for the demotion, saying he didn’t do enough to win the job while Wilson was hobbled. Pittsburgh’s defense might give Wilson time to settle in, as the Steelers give up just 14.3 points per game. LB Patrick Queen, in his first season in the middle of the 3-4 after playing for the Ravens, is becoming a major part of the machine and posted a season-high 13 tackles last week. He’ll have the responsibility of helping contain Jets RB Breece Hall (169 yards from scrimmage last week).

Las Vegas Raiders (2-4) at Los Angeles Rams (1-4), 4:05 p.m. ET

Aside from a popularity contest — California still loves the Raiders — Sunday’s game matches a pair of teams off to disappointing starts with offenses in dire need of consistency and a few good men to play wide receiver. The Raiders and Rams are two of 11 NFL teams averaging fewer than 19 points per game. And the concerns are even more heightened on defense, where the Raiders are tied for fifth worst in the NFL at 27.2 points allowed per game, while the Rams are fourth worst at 27.8 per game. Rams QB Matthew Stafford has averaged 247.6 yards per game, 11th best in the NFL, but has just three touchdown passes in five games and has been sacked 16 times behind a makeshift line.

The Raiders moved away from Gardner Minshew last week and went to Aidan O’Connell at quarterback against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. But Las Vegas had its second-lowest point total of the season in a 32-13 home loss. O’Connell is set to start again this week to guide an offense that has moved away from wide receiver Davante Adams, after he was traded to the New York Jets for a third-round draft pick. Adams played the first three games and caught 18 passes. Without him the past three games, rookie TE Brock Bowers had 19 receptions for 187 yards and one TD. Jakobi Meyers, considered the Raiders’ top wideout in Adams’ absence, did not play last Sunday with an ankle injury.

Carolina Panthers (1-5) at Washington Commanders (4-2), 4:05 p.m. ET

Dave Canales and the Panthers had a vision for what this season might look like for 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young, and it appears to be playing out — in Washington. Rookie QB Jayden Daniels has performed at what teammates dubbed this week “an MVP level,” steering Washington to the top of the NFC East in Dan Quinn’s debut season with the Commanders. Daniels’ 75.3 completion percentage is the second-highest all-time in the first six games of an NFL career (minimum 100 pass attempts). Young was bypassed by journeyman Andy Dalton at QB and the offense has performed well enough to hang around in most games. RB Chuba Hubbard is third in the NFL with 485 rushing yards. Getting the ball in the end zone isn’t a challenge for Washington, which averages 29.7 points per game. But the Panthers are putting up only 17.2 points per game. Daniels has connected with Terry McLaurin for a TD in four consecutive games while the combination of RBs Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler and Daniels has helped Washington generate a dynamic running game, averaging 157.3 yards and more than two TDs per game.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-0) at San Francisco 49ers (3-3), 4:25 p.m. ET

49ers LB Fred Warner and head coach Kyle Shanahan were frank in their discussions about facing the Chiefs, who beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl in February (and in 2019), and QB Patrick Mahomes on Sunday. Mahomes is 4-0 with 1,356 pass yards (339 per game), 11 TDs (10 pass, one rush) with a passer rating of 104.6 against San Francisco. The Cliff’s Notes version of their outlook on the Week 7 matchup: Beating Mahomes can’t be done at the microphone. The 49ers are relatively rested coming back from a Week 6 Thursday night victory at Seattle, but the Chiefs are returning from their bye week. They’ve won five of the past six games coming out of the bye, and head coach Andy Reid is 21-4 all-time after byes. Kansas City got back to work this week with RB Kareem Hunt reinstalled as the lead back and the Chiefs leaning on a collective at wide receiver to help settle an offense prone to stalling in the red zone. Mahomes has six touchdowns and six interceptions in 2024. Production isn’t a problem for San Francisco. QB Brock Purdy has 1,629 passing yards and nine touchdowns with the 49ers developing a running game without RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles). Jordan Mason (shoulder) left last week’s game only to see rookie Isaac Guerendo gain 99 yards on the ground.

Seattle Seahawks (3-3) at Atlanta Falcons (4-2), 1 p.m. ET

The Falcons are riding a three-game winning streak, their longest since winning the last four games of the 2019 season. Seattle opened the season by winning its first three games before dropping three straight. Atlanta is looking for its first winning season and playoff appearance since 2017 having just completed a three-game sweep of divisional opponents. QB Kirk Cousins set the franchise’s single-game passing total with 509 yards and four touchdowns in a 36-30 win to open October. Then the run game took over against Carolina. Backup running back Tyler Allgeier led the team with 105 rushing yards and one score, while Bijan Robinson ran for 95 yards and two touchdowns. First-year head coach Raheem Morris has been impressed with the work of offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who is also in his first year. Robinson, who spent the last two seasons as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Los Angeles Rams, has Atlanta averaging 24.8 points per game, up from 18.9 last season. Seattle is fighting injuries, especially in the secondary, and could be forced to use its fourth-string right tackle.

Tennessee Titans (1-4) at Buffalo Bills (4-2), 1 p.m. ET

The Bills introduce new No. 1 WR Amari Cooper, who was acquired Tuesday from the Browns and is looking forward to bigger and better things in his fourth NFL home. Not only did he gain three games in the standings by joining Buffalo, but he’s now the top target of Josh Allen. Allen has thrown 156 passes this year without an interception. RB James Cook (toe) might not play. But he wasn’t missed in Monday night’s 23-20 win at the New York Jets as rookie Ray Davis accumulated 152 total yards (97 rushing, 55 receiving) on 23 touches. QB Will Levis struggled again and the Titans blew a late lead to the Colts last week. Levis completed 16 of 27 passes for only 93 yards. Of more importance to Tennessee is his turnover trouble. His fourth-quarter interception last week was his seventh in five games and his 10th giveaway this season. The Titans’ problems offensively are obscuring the solid work of their defense, which is ranked No. 1 in the league in total defense (248.8 yards per game) and against the pass (137.0).

Cincinnati Bengals (2-4) at Cleveland Browns (1-5), 1 p.m. ET

Maybe AFC North rivalries can awaken the Browns, or perhaps the long-awaited return of RB Nick Chubb. Cleveland faces its first division opponent, hosting the Bengals in pursuit of a season-shifting win. Chubb is expected to take the field for the first time since a Week 2 knee injury prematurely ended his 2023 season. He comes back in a time of need for Cleveland, which just traded wideout Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. The Browns are scoring the third-fewest points per game in the NFL (15.8) and have dropped four games in a row. The Bengals got off to an 0-3 start, but they have since won two of their past three games, most recently beating the New York Giants 17-7 in Week 6. Cincinnati’s defense finally stepped up, holding an opponent under 24 points for the first time since a season-opening 16-10 setback against the New England Patriots. But Cincinnati has a six-game losing streak in Cleveland and has yielded an average of 27.5 points per contest in those defeats. QB Joe Burrow continues to do his part, ranking second in the NFL with 12 TD passes and fifth with 1,578 passing yards.

Houston Texans (5-1) at Green Bay Packers (4-2), 1 p.m. ET

Two of the most consistent quarterbacks in the league since the start of the 2023 season are center stage at Lambeau Field. Jordan Love has two-plus TD passes in 15 games since he became the Packers’ starter to open last season. C.J. Stroud has multiple TD passes in three of his past four road games, driving the Texans to the top of the AFC South. He had three TD passes in a 41-21 win at New England last week. Neither quarterback could solve the Vikings’ defense run by Brian Flores, but Love thrives at home with four TD passes in each of his last two games in Green Bay. The Packers’ defense is tops in the NFL with a plus-9 turnover differential and will be looking to force Stroud into uncharacteristic mistakes. Safety Xavier McKinney leads the league with five interceptions. Green Bay will use new kicker Brandon McManus after releasing rookie Brayden Narveson, who missed five of 17 field-goal attempts this season.

Miami Dolphins (2-3) at Indianapolis Colts (3-3), 1 p.m. ET

The visiting Dolphins are back at it following a well-timed week off and Miami has won four in a row coming out of its bye. The road team is also 4-1 in the past five meetings in this series. Miami remains in a holding pattern as it awaits word on the future availability of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (concussion). Tyler Huntley will again guide the NFL’s lowest-scoring offense on the road. The Dolphins’ output of 3, 12 and 15 points in the full games Tagovailoa sat out was two steps back from the juggernaut that averaged almost 30 per game last season. Standout receivers Tyreek Hill (23 catches, 286 yards, TD) and Jaylen Waddle (21-258-0) are taking a hit during the offensive upheaval. Last season, the two players combined for 191 receptions, 2,813 yards and 17 scoring receptions. Miami did have Raheem Mostert on the field for the first time in four weeks when he rushed for 80 yards against New England in Week 5. The Colts are experiencing their own quarterback quandary. Anthony Richardson (oblique) will start unless he has a setback but a number of Colts are hurting. WR Michael Pittman (back) played through severe pain last week — and caught a TD pass from Joe Flacco — and RB Jonathan Taylor (349 yards, four touchdowns) has missed the past two games due to an ankle injury.

Detroit Lions (4-1) at Minnesota Vikings (5-0), 1 p.m. ET

No matter the quarterback, Vikings WR Justin Jefferson isn’t the player the Lions want to see coming after losing their top pass rusher. Aidan Hutchinson (broken leg) was the league’s leader in sacks and without him, the Lions might need to dig deeper into their bag of tricks to move QB Sam Darnold out of the pocket. Jefferson has 140-plus yards in three consecutive dates with Detroit. In eight career games vs. the Lions, Jefferson has 62 catches for 1,073 yards (134.1 per game) and three TD catches. A Vikings’ win would be significant in the packed NFC North standings and give Minnesota its first 6-0 start since 2009. The Lions are clicking of late behind mistake-free QB Jared Goff. He’s going for his fourth consecutive win over the Vikings and has averaged 302 passing yards with six touchdowns and no picks in the past three meetings. His own alpha wide receiver, Amon-Ra St. Brown, had seven catches and 100-plu yards in both matchups with the Vikings last season. Lions coach Dan Campbell is 4-2 against the Vikings since he arrived in Detroit.

Philadelphia Eagles (3-2) at New York Giants (2-4), 1 p.m. ET

Saquon Barkley is back at MetLife Stadium and heads to the visitor’s locker room with the Eagles for the first time since exiting New York for Philadelphia in free agency. He’s looked the part of difference-maker with at least 115 yards from scrimmage in four of five games this season. A main obstacle to Philadelphia’s success inside is containing Pro Bowl DT Dexter Lawrence, who is tied for second in the NFL with 7.0 sacks and vowed not to miss this matchup despite being dinged up last week. The Giants are not well-suited to match up with the Eagles outside now that A.J. Brown is recovered from a hamstring injury. Brown and DeVonta Smith both hauled in TD passes from Jalen Hurts last week. Pass protection reemerged as a concern for the Giants when LT Andrew Thomas had season-ending foot surgery on Tuesday. It ended a stretch of more than 400 snaps together for the offensive line and introduces untested options into the starting mix. The Giants are getting production in the passing game from Jones and Wan’Dale Robinson, and first-round rookie Malik Nabers suits up for the first time in three weeks after clearing concussion protocol. Nabers could join a tiny group of receivers who had at least five catches in their first five career games (Terry Glenn, CeeDee Lamb, Puka Nacua).

NFL MNF: Bills at J-E-T-S

EAST RUTHERFORD – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Underwhelming might suffice as a five-game summary of the New York Jets through five games of the 2024 regular season. Even so, the Jets can move into first place in the AFC East with a win on Monday night against the Bills.

A 2-3 start resulted in Jets owner Woody Johnson firing head coach Robert Saleh and promoting Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets’ defensive coordinator, to take the reins as the interim coach. Ulbrich demoted offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, stripping his play-calling duties to hand the responsibility to quarterbacks coach Todd Downing.

It might not take long to determine if the changes are akin to putting lipstick on a pig, given how much deference the offensive coaching staff gives Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Can Buffalo’s offense get back on track?

The Bills had a much better start to their campaign. They rattled off three straight wins but have now lost back-to-back games.

In hindsight, Buffalo might have benefited from a soft schedule, as its three wins (Cardinals, Dolphins, and Jaguars) came against sub-.500 teams, with a combined record of 5-12.

Defensively, those opponents rank 25th or lower in FTN Fantasy’s comprehensive Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (DVOA) metric.

Offensively, Bills quarterback Josh Allen is coming off a 9-for-30 (131 passing yards) performance on the road against the Houston Texans.

Allen and his receivers weren’t on the same page. He has the fourth-highest percentage (19.5%) of “bad throws” that don’t include spikes or throwaways. Buffalo receivers have the second-highest percentage of dropped passes per attempt (7.8%).

Things won’t get any easier against a Jets secondary that Pro Football Focus ranks first in pass coverage with an 86.5 grade.

Rodgers deserves blame for the Jets’ dysfunction

Trading for Rodgers also meant the Jets essentially would give him the keys to the franchise.

Even before his arrival, Saleh signed Hackett as the offensive coordinator, given his strong relationship and perhaps even friendship with Rodgers since working together in Green Bay.

Some think Rodgers was even working behind the scenes, prodding the Jets to sign wide receiver Allen Lazard, a former Packers teammate.

We know that Rodgers definitely played a part in the Jets signing another former teammate in wide receiver Randall Cobb.

Thus, Rodgers has been the puppet master, pulling the strings for quite some time now.

There are even reports that Rodgers contacted the Jets owner after learning that Saleh was considering firing Hackett as the coordinator.

The dismissal completely blindsided Saleh, which suggests that something must have changed radically over a short period of time for the Jets front office to make such a decision.

Interestingly, the first thing the Jets’ new play-caller addressed when meeting the media was the Jets’ rushing attack.

“First of all, this team does have a strong run game. We just haven’t seen it come to fruition consistently enough,” Downing said. “Secondly, I think there become times where you can find people pressing a little bit because there’s an expectation for production and when it’s not met, you can feel a sense of urgency.”

There was no mention of his underperforming quarterback, who ranks 25th in Total QBR.

Unless Downing is brave enough to add dramatic wrinkles, we’re bracing for more of the same: the Jets’ stagnant offense relying on a dominant defense.

Texans Pummel Patriots, 41-21

FOXBOROUGH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Houston’s QB C.J. Stroud threw for three touchdowns to lift the Texans to a 41-21 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday afternoon in Massachusetts.

Stroud completed 20 of 31 passes for 192 yards and was picked off once as Houston (5-1) spoiled Drake Maye’s first career start. Maye, selected third overall by New England in this year’s draft, finished with 243 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 20-of-33 passing.

Joe Mixon returned from a three-game absence to rack up 132 yards from scrimmage (102 rushing, 30 receiving) for the Texans. He rushed for a touchdown and caught another. Stefon Diggs was one of Stroud’s favorite targets, hauling in six catches for 77 yards and a score.

After seeing its first five drives end in four punts and a pick, New England (1-5) came to life just before the break, pulling within 14-7 on Maye’s 40-yard scoring strike to Kayshon Boutte with 11 seconds left in the first half. It was Maye’s first career passing TD.

Momentum wasn’t on the Patriots’ side for long, though, as Maye fumbled on the first drive of the second half to set up Houston at the New England 10. Two plays later, Diggs hauled in a 10-yard touchdown to put the Texans up 21-7.

A 39-yard field goal from Ka’imi Fairbairn extended the visitors’ advantage to 24-7 with 6:56 to go in the third quarter. Fairbairn drilled a 46-yarder just more than 1 1/2 minutes later.

Maye trimmed the Patriots’ deficit to 27-14 with one minute left in the third when he connected with Hunter Henry for a 6-yard TD.

Mixon (20 yards) and Dameon Pierce (54) sandwiched Maye’s 35-yard touchdown pass to DeMario Douglas with fourth-quarter scoring runs to forge the 41-21 final.

Douglas had six receptions for 92 yards and the TD.

Houston cut through the Patriots’ defense with ease on the game’s opening drive, an 11-play, 65-yard march that ended with Stroud’s 2-yard touchdown pass to Tank Dell.

Stroud made it 14-0 when he found Mixon for a 10-yard score with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

SF 49ers in Full Stride vs Seahawks

SEATTLE – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – SF QB Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, two to George Kittle, and the San Francisco 49ers — after building a 20-point lead — held on to defeat the host Seattle Seahawks 36-24 on Thursday night.

Purdy also threw a 76-yard scoring strike to Deebo Samuel Sr. as the 49ers (3-3) moved into a first-place tie with the Seahawks (3-3) in the NFC West.

Geno Smith threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett with 1:44 remaining to pull Seattle within 29-24.

San Francisco’s Kyle Juszczyk scored on a 6-yard run with 1:17 left to clinch the victory. That came two plays after rookie Isaac Guerendo broke free on a 76-yard run. Guerendo rushed for 99 yards on 10 attempts after Jordan Mason, who entered the game second in the NFL in rushing, left with an apparent left shoulder injury.

Mason gained 73 yards on nine carries. Purdy was 18 of 28 for 255 yards, and Samuel produced 102 yards on three receptions. Kittle had five catches for 58 yards.

The 49ers forced three turnovers and turned them into 12 points.

Smith connected on 30 of 52 passes for 312 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Seahawks tried to establish the running game but gained just 52 yards on 20 carries.

Laviska Shenault Jr. scored on a 97-yard kickoff return for Seattle, which took its third consecutive loss.

Purdy’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Kittle with 10:07 left in the third quarter gave the 49ers a 23-3 lead.

The 49ers, who blew double-digit leads in divisional losses to the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals earlier this season, then saw Shenault return the ensuing kickoff to spark a Seattle comeback.

Kenneth Walker III scored on a 1-yard run with 1:24 left in the third to pull the Seahawks within 23-17.

Niners rookie Renardo Green stepped in front of DK Metcalf and picked off a Smith pass to set up Kittle’s second touchdown, a 9-yard reception with 6:20 remaining in the game, to make it 29-17.

The 49ers took a 16-3 halftime lead. San Francisco had a 244-133 edge in total offense, including 105-24 on the ground, and forced a pair of turnovers — an interception of a Smith pass near the goal line and a Shenault fumble on a kickoff return.

The lone touchdown of the half was the 76-yarder to Samuel down the left sideline with 13:30 remaining in the second quarter.

San Francisco kicker Matthew Wright, signed earlier in the week after Jake Moody sustained a high ankle sprain Sunday, converted all three of his field-goal attempts in the first half, from 25, 41 and 35 yards.

KC Chiefs Remain Unbeaten; Carr Hurt

KANSAS CITY – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Kareem Hunt and Xavier Worthy of Kansas City rushed for touchdowns, Harrison Butker kicked four field goals, Patrick Mahomes passed for 331 yards and the host Chiefs defeated the New Orleans Saints 26-13 on Monday night.

JuJu Smith-Schuster caught seven passes for 130 yards and Travis Kelce made nine receptions for 70 yards to help the Chiefs (5-0) overcome the absence of injured wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice.

Hunt rushed for 102 yards, while Mahomes completed 28 of 39 passes with one interception.

New Orleans quarterback Derek Carr completed 18 of 28 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns with one interception before leaving the game because of an oblique injury in the fourth quarter.

Rashid Shaheed finished with four catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, but the Saints (2-3) lost their third consecutive game.

The Chiefs had an opportunity to extend their 16-7 halftime lead on the first possession of the third quarter, but Butker’s 51-yard field goal hit the right upright and caromed wide.

Kansas City drove to the New Orleans 2-yard line on its next possession, but a Mahomes pass was intercepted in the end zone by defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, who returned to the New Orleans 35. Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter.

On the second play of the fourth quarter Carr threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Foster Moreau, pulling New Orleans within 16-13. Blake Grupe’s extra-point kick was no good.

The Chiefs needed just five plays to answer as Mahomes connected with Smith-Schuster for a 50-yard gain and Kelce received a direct snap and handed to Worthy for a 3-yard touchdown run and a 23-13 lead.

Butker’s 38-yard field goal completed the scoring with 3:03 remaining.

On Kansas City’s first possession, Hunt ran 5 yards for a touchdown that gave the hosts a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Chiefs increased the lead on a 26-yard field goal from Butker before Carr threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Shaheed to pull New Orleans within 10-7.

Kansas City overcame a second-and-34 on its way to a 34-yard Butker field goal, and the kicker added a 28-yarder to increase the lead to nine points entering halftime.

Patriots Caught by Dolphins in OT

FOXBOROUGH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Alec Ingold rushed for a go-ahead 3-yard touchdown with 4:24 remaining to lift the Miami Dolphins to a 15-10 win over the New England Patriots on a gorgeous football Sunday afternoon in Massachusetts.

Miami (2-3) couldn’t cash in on a two-point conversion after Ingold scored, but it didn’t matter, as New England failed to find the end zone on its ensuing drive.

It looked like Jacoby Brissett threw a 12-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 to go, but Ja’Lynn Polk failed to get both feet down in bounds. The Patriots (1-4) then came up empty on a fourth-and-15.

New England ended up getting the ball back with 29 seconds left and worked down to the Miami 11, but the clock hit zeros as the offense was trying to scramble back to the line of scrimmage.

Jaylen Wright racked up 86 yards on 13 carries for the Dolphins, who totaled 193 rushing yards as a team. Wright took on a larger role in the backfield after the Dolphins lost De’Von Achane to a concussion in the first quarter.

Tyler Huntley completed 18 of 31 passes for 194 yards. He was picked off once. Tyreek Hill hauled in six catches for 69 yards.

Brissett finished with 160 yards on 18-of-34 passing. Rhamondre Stevenson collected 89 yards and a TD on 12 carries.

Joey Slye’s 38-yard field goal gave New England a 10-3 edge with 11:01 remaining in the third quarter. Jason Sanders answered with a pair of field goals — from 32 and 47 yards out — to make it a one-point game entering the fourth.

Sanders provided Miami with its first lead of the season when he capped the game’s opening drive with a 54-yard field goal.

New England later made the most of a Christian Gonzalez interception that set it up at the Dolphins 43. Four plays after the pick, Stevenson rushed for a 33-yard touchdown to put the Patriots ahead 7-3 with 3:55 left in the first quarter.

Points were nowhere to be found for the remainder of the first half, mainly due to the struggles of both sides’ special teams units.

Miami had a punt blocked, botched a snap on a field-goal attempt and watched Sanders miss a 41-yarder. Slye also missed the mark, pushing a 33-yard field-goal attempt wide right.

NFL SNF: Bills at Ravens

BALTIMORE – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Buffalo is one of five 3-0 teams in the NFL, while the Baltimore Ravens are hungry to prove they are still on par with teams like the Bills in the AFC.

When the teams meet on Sunday night in Maryland, the Ravens will have at least one thing going for them: They are hosting their second annual “Darkness Falls” game, a college-style stadium blackout that has Lamar Jackson pumped.

“Hearing the ‘Flock,’ just seeing all black throughout the crowd, it’s like you can’t escape,” the quarterback said with a grin. “It’s something about it, man, I can’t really describe it. Like the dark side.”

The Ravens (1-2) didn’t need home cooking to defeat the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday, though they let a 22-point lead dwindle in the fourth quarter before winning 28-25. Baltimore has been outscored 32-7 in the fourth quarter of its past two games.

Derrick Henry racked up 151 of the Ravens’ 274 rushing yards vs. the Cowboys and scored the third and fourth touchdowns of his debut season in Baltimore. Jackson ran for 87 yards and a score, and Justice Hill added 33 yards on five carries.

“They are kind of a good 1-2 punch,” coach John Harbaugh said of Henry and Hill. “They play off each other really well. They run the same plays, too, but they also run different plays at times. I just think it’s a good change of pace for the defense.”

The Ravens continue to tweak their defense, adding pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue to their practice squad earlier this week. Ngakoue has totaled 69 career sacks for six teams, including nine games for Baltimore in 2020. Baltimore’s Kyle Van Noy is tied for third in the league with four sacks.

As for the Bills, there has been little to nitpick this year.

After creaming the Jacksonville Jaguars 47-10 on Monday night, the Bills have a plus-64 scoring differential, tops in the league. Their turnover differential is plus-5 — only Green Bay’s is better — and they rank in the top 10 in total defense (286.7 yards allowed per game), passing defense (168.3) and scoring defense (16 points per game).

Josh Allen leads an offense that is scoring 37.3 points per game, another league high. He picked apart the Jaguars for four passing touchdowns before halftime on Monday night.

Allen won AFC Offensive Player of the Week, one week after running back James Cook won the honor for his three-touchdown game against the Miami Dolphins. Buffalo’s Gregory Rousseau won AFC Defensive Player of the Week for a three-sack game in Week 1.

“It’s a shame our O-line can’t win Offensive Player of the Week,” Allen quipped, “because they play their tails off. And even going back to Week 2, James was able to win that because of what our O-line’s doing.”

Damar Hamlin grabbed his first career interception in the Jacksonville blowout. It was an emotional moment for Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals less than 20 months ago.

“We keep it simple and everybody’s keeping the team first,” Hamlin said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday. “Buffalo is a special place to be.”

The Bills have ruled out linebacker Terrel Bernard (pec) and cornerback Taron Johnson (forearm) for Sunday, and rookie offensive lineman Tylan Grable (groin) will be out for multiple weeks. Cornerback Kaiir Elam (neck) was limited in Wednesday’s walkthrough.

The Ravens are dealing with a banged-up offensive line. Center Tyler Linderbaum (knee), left guard Andrew Vorhees (ankle) and right tackle Patrick Mekari (neck) missed Wednesday’s practice after they played every snap of the Dallas game. Nose tackle Michael Pierce (shoulder) and cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (hamstring) also sat out Wednesday, while linebacker Roquan Smith (ankle) was limited.

The Bills have won two straight meetings with the Ravens, including a victory in the divisional round of the 2020-21 playoffs.
