LeBron Sets NBA All-Time Win Mark

LOS ANGELES – (Wire Service Report) – Luka Doncic had 42 points and 12 assists, and LeBron James scored 14 points in his NBA-record 1,229th career win, powering the Los Angeles Lakers to a decisive 127-113 victory over the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers. The Los Angeles Lakers (50-26) won for the 13th time in its last 14 games, clinching a playoff spot and the Pacific Division title earlier in the night when the Phoenix Suns lost. The Lakers sit third in the Western Conference, two games ahead of the Denver Nuggets.

James surpassed Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most combined regular season and playoff wins. The all-time scoring leader added five rebounds and six assists against the Cavaliers, the team he spent 11 seasons with over two stints.

MVP candidate Doncic returned from an automatic one-game suspension for picking up his 16th technical foul. He became the third-youngest player with 15,000 career points at 27 years, 31 days (James holds the mark at 25, 79).

Jarrett Allen scored 18 points for Cleveland (47-29), which remained one game behind the third-place New York Knicks in the East. James Harden had 17 points and Donovan Mitchell chipped in 10 points and six assists.

The Cavaliers, whose magic number to make the playoffs is one, have won six of their last eight games and are 16-6 with Harden in the lineup.

Deandre Ayton had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Austin Reaves scored 19 for Los Angeles, which blew the game open by scoring 45 in the third to go up 110-83. It was the 100th victory for coach JJ Redick.

The Lakers carried a 65-53 advantage into the half, fueled by 20 points and seven assists from Doncic and 11 points and six rebounds from Ayton. Allen had 18 points on 9-of-11 field-goal attempts, but Mitchell only scored two for the Cavaliers.

Doncic wasted no time getting back in the flow, taking 10 shots and scoring 14 points while playing the entire first. Cleveland held a 34-32 lead behind nine points from Harden and eight points and three rebounds by Allen.

Los Angeles guard Marcus Smart (right ankle bruise) missed his fourth game in a row, while the Cavaliers were without swingman Sam Merrill (left hamstring soreness).

Cleveland forwards Jaylon Tyson (left great toe bruise) and Dean Wade (right ankle sprain) did not travel with the team on its three-game trip.

LeBron James: First to 40,000 Points

LOS ANGELES – Veteran NBA star LeBron James became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career points, scoring on a driving layup in Saturday’s home game against the Denver Nuggets.

James became the NBA’s all-time scoring leader over a year ago when he passed former Lakers star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Feb. 7, 2022. Abdul-Jabbar had 38,387 points over 20 seasons.

James entered Saturday’s game with a career average of 27.1 points per game over 1,474 contests in 21 NBA seasons.

Needing nine points to reach his latest milestone, the Akron, Ohio, native had five points on 2 of 3 shooting in the first quarter.

James cut to the basket for a layup to open the second quarter then reached the 40,000 mark when he drove past the Nuggets’ Michael Porter Jr. with a spin then made a left-handed layup with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter.

The 39-year-old has been on a scoring surge of late with an average of 30.8 points over his previous four games. James entered the game averaging 25.3 points per game this season with 7.1 rebounds and 7.9 assists.

James scored the first points of his career as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 29, 2003, against the Sacramento Kings. He reached 10,000 points in February 2008, and hit 20,000 points in January 2013. James made his 30,000th point in January 2018.

While We’re Young Ideas Provides Some Key Advice to Saudi Hoops

BOSTON – Earlier this week Yahoo’s Jay Hart wrote an interesting but fictional premonition of the near future. It read:

“The year is 2030, and the Saudi Basketball League is experiencing a boom. Thanks to the cash poured in from the Saudi Investment Fund to lure Kevin Durant and Steph Curry, the league is as popular as it’s ever been since its founding in 1976.‌

But throwing ridiculous money at aging superstars who’ve postponed retirement for nine-figure per-year paychecks can only earn the league so much credibility. To gain real cred, they need the best players now, not the best players of a decade ago. So they set their sights on Victor Wembanyama, who since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2023 has won three NBA MVPs, two titles and emerged as the most popular player in the world.

‌Their pitch: 5 years, $2 billion, or about $1.5 billion more than the NBA’s supermax contract allows… All of this is a massive hypothetical, of course, but it’s not unrealistic,” said Hart in an interesting column.

What is the way for Saudi Arabia to make a mark on the basketball world?

Here’s some free advice, as the end game is building awareness and participation in the sport by men, women, boys and girls:

  1. Begin working with Euroleague Basketball to form both coaching clinics and player clinics, much like the way the NBA proved highly effective with the NBA Coaches World Tour in the early ‘90s and then with Basketball without Borders, beginning in 2001. (To refresh memories, the Nba sent the likes of the late, great Dr. Jack Ramsay, and former players like Bill Walton, Calvin Murphy and dozens of others to events which coincided with a local basketball championship or tournament which attracted hundreds of youth and pro coaches).
  2. Sponsor global basketball events much like the way Turkish Airlines sponsors the EuroLeague and sponsored and advertised at the 2002 FIBA Worlds in Indianapolis.
  3. Participate in existing regional (Middle East and Asia Region) tournaments at youth and senior levels. Potentially host a regional tournament or eventually a qualification tournament
  4. Invest in and build a state of the art facility – designed with perfection to play in and host major basketball tournaments and other sporting events. As we know, an Arena can act like a giant Town Hall to modernize an entire segment of a city.
  5. Potentially include the Sports Facility in Neom, a futuristic international economic center – already visualized – and being constructed in the temperate Northwest of Saudi Arabia.
  6. Host the NBA/FIBA “Basketball without Borders” event to make a statement about Saudi Arabia-Europe-Middle-East-Israel-Asia-Africa investments and better diplomatic and business relations.
  7. Eventually bid for and host EuroLeague regular season games, NBA preseason and a Euro Final Four or Regional Olympic or Worlds qualifying tournament.
  8. Continue to train local players and pro teams to improve towards world class level of play, seeking the “next” version of Yao Ming, Hakeem Olajuwon, Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker.

Mage overtook Two Phil’s down the stretch to win the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. For the effort, Mage was able to dip the aching hooves in Palmolive. … Humans were rewarded, too, as those with winning betting slips earned some hefty returns. … Mage paid $32.42, $14.58 and $9.08. Two Phil’s returned $10.44 and $6.52 at 9-1 odds. Angel of Empire paid $4.70 to show. … A $2 exacta paid $330.44 and a Superfecta paid $15,643.65 for a $1 bet.

LeBron James Passes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as NBA’s All-Time Top Scorer

LOS ANGELES – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James parlayed his offensive versatility over 20 seasons into the NBA all-time scoring record, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on Tuesday for most points in league history.

James eclipsed Abdul-Jabbar’s mark of 38,387 career regular-season points on a fallaway shot with 10.2 seconds remaining in the third quarter of the Lakers’ Tuesday game against the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder.

He stepped back from the defense of Kenrich Williams near the foul line and sank the record-breaking jumper.

Abdul-Jabbar, who was sitting courtside, stood and applauded as James celebrated. The former Lakers star and NBA commissioner Adam Silver both shook James’ hand and gave him brief hugs at center court.

James then got on a microphone and said, “Everybody that has ever been a part of this run with me the last 20-plus years, I want to say thank you so much because I wouldn’t be me without all y’all. All y’all helped. All y’all’s passion and sacrifices helped me to get to this point.

“And to the NBA, to Adam Silver, to the late great David Stern, thank you very much for allowing me to be a part of something I always dreamed about. I would never in a million years dreamt this to be even better than what it is tonight. So (expletive) man, thank you, guys.”

James ended the night with 38 points, leaving his career total at 38,390 points, but the Lakers lost 133-130.

Silver subsequently released a statement that read, “Congratulations to LeBron on breaking one of the most hallowed records in all of sports by becoming the NBA’s all-time scoring leader. It’s a towering achievement that speaks to his sustained excellence over 20 seasons in the league. And quite amazingly, LeBron continues to play at an elite level and his basketball history is still being written.”

After the game, James said, “I don’t know if it’s hit me. It hit me a little when my family got out on the floor after it happened and I saw all my friends and family, but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet. …

“To be able to play at this level, 20 years in and the minutes I played, the games I played, through the regular season and the postseason, to still be at the apex of my game is a really surreal feeling.

“Hopefully I can keep doing it but at the end of the day it’s just been a pleasure to be in this league for 20 years. And however long I can go and however long that can be, I’ve had a hell of a run.”

Asked whether he is the best NBA player of all time, James replied, “I’ll let everybody else decide who that is or just talk about it, but it’s great barbershop talk. Me personally, I’m going to take myself against anybody who’s ever played this game. But everyone’s gonna have their favorite, decide who their favorite is.

“I know what I bring to the table every single night and what I can do out on this floor. I always feel like I’m the best to ever play this game, but there are so many great ones and I’m happy to be just a part of their journey.”

The star-studded crowd included tennis legend John McEnroe, music stars Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Bad Bunny, actor Denzel Washington and former Lakers players Bob McAdoo and James Worthy, among others.

With the skills of a point guard, the shooting prowess of a wing and the strength of a power forward, James entered Tuesday’s game averaging 30 points per game this season and needing 36 on the night to break the record.

James, 38, has averaged 27.2 points per game in his career while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-10, 2014-18), Miami Heat (2010-14) and the Lakers (2018-present).

Not counted in his regular-season record total are James’ 7,631 playoff points, also the most by a player in NBA history. He has played in 266 career postseason games while winning four NBA championships.

James missed his first two shots against the Thunder before scoring his first basket on a 3-pointer from the left wing with 7:03 remaining in the first quarter. He had eight points on 3-of-6 shooting in the opening period and 20 points by halftime by going 6 of 10 from the floor, although Los Angeles trailed 76-66 at the break.

In an example of just how consistent of a scorer James has been, he also extended his record streak of double-digit games to 1,140.

James’ record performance wasn’t enough for the Lakers, though, as the Thunder emerged with the win.

Lakers coach Darvin Ham said, “The guys, they wanted to see Bron do what he did tonight. A lot of times I think the focus was more about trying to get Bron to the record as opposed to just playing natural basketball. We were able to make some good plays and he did what he did, he eclipsed the record. But we just had too many mistakes.”
