BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox welcomed the Chicago White Sox to Fenway Park just as Boston’s newly acquired third baseman Alex Bregman and his wife Reagan were welcoming their second son into this world, their first child born as a member of Red Sox nation.

From April 11 to 13 this year, the Red Sox dropped two of three games to the lowly pale sox when Boston opened the season with an 8-9 record, hardly impressive. Starting this four-game, Easter weekend and Patriots’ Day set, the home team is an even 10-10, stuck in third place in the American League East.

Chicago is already dead last in the American League Central and their 4-14 record has those two home victories, showing for half of their win total for the young season. The White Sox have yet to win a road game in 2025.

Friday night at Fenway Park continued that trend in front of 35,620 fans.

Boston wasted no time in setting a 3-0 lead as DH Rafael Devers doubled on a ground rule bounce in center field, Bregman walked and Sox shortstop Trevor Story rapped a first pitch change-up from Chicago SP Martin Perez and sent it 427 feet to deep center field to clear the bases.

Boston added a run in the third inning when Story singled up the middle and right fielder Rob Refsnyder banked one off the left-center friend Green Monster for a double, scoring Story. Refsnyder’s blast fell about five feet short on the 37-foot, two inch wall.

Former Red Sox outfielder, Andrew Benintendi, now playing left field for the White Sox, put his club on the scoreboard with a towering home run over the famed Pesky Pole in right field to make it 4-1 in the fourth inning.

Chicago’s Penn Murfee relieved Perez in the bottom of the fourth, sending the starter to the showers after 3 IP, five hits, four earned runs, with two base on balls and no strike-outs. Perez threw 52 pitches over the short stint with 34 as strikes. He allowed the Story HR. The club later announced Perez left the game early because of left forearm soreness.

Boston went to quick work on Murfee as catcher Carlos Narvaez doubled to lead off the home fourth and Sox centerfielder Ceddanne Rafaela took a 78 mph sweeper 406 feet and over the Green Monster in left field. The home run made it 6-1 Red Sox.

Benintendi singled in the sixth inning and scored on a ground out to cut the lead to four runs, 6-2, and reliever Tyler Gilbert entered the game to face Boston in the bottom of the inning.

For Boston, starter Hunter Dobbins pitched 6 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs.  He walked none and struck out six Chicago batters as he tossed 79 pitches (55 strikes). Dobbins earned the victory and is (2-0) on the season.

In Boston’s half of the seventh inning, Story hit another home run on a 0-1 count, clocking a 365 foot bullet to the left field Green Monster seats to mark his 20th career multi-homer game. Story last had multi-HRs when he hit three off the Seattle Mariners on May 19, 2022.

Boston brought in reliever Josh Winckowski in the eighth inning, leading 9-2, and he held Chicago scoreless.

In the Red Sox end of the eighth, Narvaez hit his first career home run, a healthy 353 foot solo blast into the left field Monster seats. It made the score 10-2, Boston.

Winckowski gave up a run in the ninth inning to close out the score at 10-3, and Boston took the first game of the four game series.

Perez took the loss and is now (1-1) for the White Sox.

The two teams will meet again for a 4:10pm Saturday afternoon start.

 

 

 

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report from Official News Release) – The Boston Red Sox activated third baseman Alex Bregman off the paternity list Friday, while right-hander Michael Fulmer was designated for assignment.

In other moves, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Hunter Dobbins, while infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard was optioned. Dobbins starts Friday night vs the Chicago White Sox.

Bregman, 31, last played Tuesday when he went 5-for-5 with a pair of home runs and four RBIs in Boston’s 7-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. In his first 19 games with the club since signing as a free agent in the offseason, he was batting .321 with four home runs and 16 RBIs.

He and his wife, Reagan, welcomed their second son this week.

Fulmer, 32, made his Red Sox debut Monday and gave up three runs in 2 2/3 innings. A former starter for the Detroit Tigers, he is 37-50 with a 3.96 ERA in 263 appearances (90 starts) over eight career seasons.

He won the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year with the Tigers.

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Chicago’s Omar Narvaez had three RBIs, while Jacob Amaya and Miguel Vargas each delivered two-run doubles and Davis Martin pitched six-plus strong innings as the host Chicago White Sox routed the Boston Red Sox 11-1 on Friday.

Chicago snapped an eight-game losing streak while sending Boston to its fourth loss in five games. The White Sox capitalized on five Red Sox errors to score six unearned runs.

A career outing from Martin (1-1) helped propel the White Sox. The right-hander pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in 22 major-league starts while matching his previous best with six strikeouts.

Martin scattered one run and six hits while walking one. He retired nine straight Boston hitters during one stretch.

Red Sox counterpart Sean Newcomb struggled to keep the White Sox off the bases. Amaya lined a two-run double to left with two outs in the second inning to give Chicago a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

There also were two outs when Vargas contributed a two-run double to start a four-run fourth. Luis Robert followed with a run-scoring single, stole second base and scored on Lenyn Sosa’s RBI single.

Newcomb (0-2) spaced six runs and six hits in four innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

Narvaez extended the White Sox advantage to 7-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. He added a two-run single in the seventh.

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – “Let’s get some runs” is typically the domain of Chicago’s North Side, where it’s a common refrain at Wrigley Field should the Cubs be trailing at the seventh-inning stretch.

A weekend series between the host Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox could use an infusion of offense, though.

The White Sox have scored three runs in their past three games entering Friday’s series opener. The Red Sox, meanwhile, needed a bit of good fortune to rally for a 4-3 victory in 10 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, avoiding a four-game sweep that saw Boston score four runs in the first three games.

Chicago stumbles back home on an eight-game losing streak that includes an 0-6 trip through Detroit and Cleveland.

The White Sox collected just two extra-base hits while being swept by the Guardians — doubles by Austin Slater on Wednesday and Matt Thaiss on Thursday.

Boston rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the eighth inning of its series finale against the visiting Blue Jays, with Trevor Story delivering a game-ending RBI groundout.

Story said the win will “give us something to build on” and ensure a “happy flight” to Chicago.

“It’s been a tough series here with the Blue Jays, but we’re just looking to dominate at home — and we didn’t do that,” Story said.

Right-hander Davis Martin (0-1, 5.73 ERA) gets the call for the White Sox as he aims to recapture the stuff of his first start this season — not his second.

After spacing two unearned runs and four hits in six innings of a March 30 no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels, Martin sputtered on Saturday in Detroit. He yielded seven runs and nine hits, including two home runs, in five innings.

Martin feels he learned a valuable lesson about pitch sequencing from the loss to the Tigers.

“You saw they were jumping on offspeed early and often,” he said. “As we went on, we started switching it to more of a fastball-heavy approach, moving the sinker around, following it up with four-seams, doubling it up with four-seams. So just seeing that earlier, the better.

“Instead of doing that in the third and fourth innings, doing that in the first two or so. Just reading swings, reading those tendencies early in the game is another part of development.”

Martin defeated the Red Sox in his lone career appearance against them, delivering six innings of one-run, three-hit ball in a victory at Fenway Park last September. He walked one and struck out three while working around three hit batsmen.

Lefty Sean Newcomb (0-1, 5.19) will start for the Red Sox. Pitching against the St. Louis Cardinals in a doubleheader on Sunday, he turned in a bounce-back effort from his first outing of the season.

Newcomb took a no-decision, spacing one run and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. In his first game, on March 31, he took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits over four innings of an 8-5 loss at Baltimore.

Newcomb has pitched to a 0.00 ERA in two career relief appearances against the White Sox covering 2 1/3 innings.

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – A five-run ninth inning propelled the visiting Chicago White Sox to a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox, salvaging the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

Chicago (33-111) broke open a 2-2 game with five runs on five hits against Boston reliever Zack Kelly (6-3), who recorded just one out while facing seven batters in the ninth.

Singles by Andrew Vaughn and Lenyn Sosa, who both went 2-for-4, put two aboard with one out before Dominic Fletcher knocked in the go-ahead run on a double inside the left-field line.

Jacob Amaya’s knock into right two batters later plated an insurance run. Zach DeLoach’s hard grounder to right scored two more and Luis Robert Jr., who had three hits, delivered a deep sacrifice fly.

Fraser Ellard (2-2) got the win in relief for the White Sox, who had lost 20 consecutive starts by Chris Flexen.

Flexen struck out six and allowed two runs on two solo home runs across six innings.

Connor Wong (3-for-4) and Wilyer Abreu (2-for-4) each doubled and homered to lead the Red Sox (72-71).

Richard Fitts, who allowed two unearned runs on six hits in a 5 2/3-inning start, and Luis Guerrero both made their MLB debuts on the mound for Boston.

The Red Sox went scoreless in the first after Jarren Duran was tagged out at home on a relay and Abreu was caught stealing third base to end the threat. Wong’s two-out homer an inning later did get Boston on the board.

Fitts faced just a batter over the minimum through the first three innings, having picked off a runner in the first and worked around Vaughn’s leadoff single to post another zero in the second.

The White Sox had something brewing with two hits to begin the fourth, but Fitts and shortstop Trevor Story combined to start a 1-6-3 double play to escape trouble.

DeLoach’s grounder eluded Boston first baseman Triston Casas for an error and rolled into the right-field corner to begin Chicago’s sixth inning against Fitts.

Robert’s single and Benintendi’s RBI grounder tied the score, then Lee’s chopper through the infield landed just past relief pitcher Greg Weissert’s reach to give the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

Boston tied it when Abreu crushed his 15th homer of the season to right-center field to make it 2-2 in the home sixth. The damage could have been greater if not for right fielder Fletcher’s dive to rob Rafael Devers of an extra-base hit towards the gap.

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Chicago’s Gavin Sheets belted a grand slam among his three hits, Paul DeJong homered and four pitchers delivered 4 2/3 innings of three-hit relief to lift the host Chicago White Sox to a 6-1 victory against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

After stopping a franchise-worst 14-game losing streak Friday night, the White Sox used a five-run fifth Saturday en route to winning consecutive games for the first time since May 14-15.

Chicago collected six of its 10 hits against Boston starter Brayan Bello (6-3) in the fifth. Sheets punctuated the rally with his first career grand slam one batter after Andrew Vaughn tied the game at 1 with an RBI infield single.

DeJong and Lenyn Sosa added two hits apiece for the White Sox, who out-hit the Red Sox 10-5. DeJong provided the final margin in the seventh with his team-leading 11th home run.

White Sox rookie right-hander Nick Nastrini was unable to earn his first victory despite delivering the best start of his young career, scattering one run and two hits in 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts.

While he needed 71 pitches to do it, an effectively wild Nastrini held Boston without a hit over the first four innings.

Nastrini issued five walks but made pitches when he needed to, including when he induced Dominic Brown on a double-play grounder on a 3-1 count to end the third inning.

Bobby Dalbec delivered Boston’s first hit and the game’s first run with a solo homer that narrowly cleared the right field wall leading off the fifth.

David Hamilton followed with a bloop single to left. Jarren Duran walked two batters later to spell the end of Nastrini’s outing, but Chicago escaped further trouble. Tanner Banks picked Duran off at first base before throwing a pitch and then struck Jamie Westbrook out looking.

Home plate umpire Alan Porter ejected Boston manager Alex Cora for arguing balls and strikes moments later.

Banks (1-2) was the winner, allowing one hit in 1 2/3 innings to go with two strikeouts.

Bello allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Red Sox finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position while stranding nine. Hamilton had two hits.

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The White Sox of Chi-town will attempt to win for the first time since May 21 when they face the visiting Boston Red Sox on Friday night in the second game of their four-game series.

Boston opened the series with a 14-2 victory Thursday. That was Chicago’s 14th straight defeat, which broke the franchise record for consecutive losses in a season, set 100 years ago.

“It’s difficult, but today is over,” Chicago’s Paul DeJong said following Thursday’s loss. “We can flush it and prepare to win (Friday). That’s all we can really do is control what we can do in the moment. Right now the game’s over. Just go home and rest and get ready to go (Friday).

“Today could be a little different based on the score of the game, but overall I think in the last week we’ve been playing a lot of tight games and just can’t quite pull out that small margin of victory. I think we have to do everything we can each day to win a game. I think that’s what other teams are doing to us, and we have to match that intensity.”

Philadelphia holds the MLB record for consecutive losses in a season — 23 in 1961. Baltimore holds the American League record with 21 straight in 1988.

Chicago has been outscored 97-45 during its 14-game losing streak. The White Sox have lost 18 of their past 19 games.

Boston led 3-0 after two innings Thursday and 7-0 after four.

“We just got down early,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “They came out swinging it, and we faced a pretty good pitcher (Tanner Houck). We just have to regroup and get back after it.”

The White Sox haven’t won since they beat Toronto 5-0 on May 21 to end a four-game losing streak. Left-hander Garrett Crochet, who was the winning pitcher in that game, is scheduled to start Friday for Chicago.

Crochet (5-5, 3.49 ERA) is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career relief appearances (three innings) against the Red Sox.

Right-hander Cooper Criswell (3-2, 3.92) is Boston’s probable starter. Criswell didn’t figure into the decision in his only career appearance against the White Sox. He allowed a run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings on April 21, 2023, while pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays.

“He’ll give us at least five, probably more,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “The pitching has been good.”

The Red Sox hit three home runs and collected a season-high 24 hits in Thursday’s win. Each of the 11 Boston players who came to the plate had at least one hit. Ceddanne Rafaela led the offense with four hits and four RBIs.

Rafaela leads major league rookies with 37 RBIs.

“It’s nice to see that the hard work we put in pays off,” he said. “When we put it together, these are the types of games we’re going to have, where we pass it to each other. Just keep getting yours. Take as much as you can. It’s fun to have these type of games with my guys. It’s nice to get it going. It’s nice.”

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Starting pitcher Mike Clevinger allowed two runs in six innings to help the visiting Chicago White Sox defeat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 Sunday in a game that ended after six innings because of rain.

Clevinger (9-8) gave up five hits and didn’t walk or strike out a batter.

The White Sox (60-96) won two games in the three-game series. It was their first series victory since they took two out of three against the New York Yankees on Aug. 7-9.

The loss dropped the Red Sox (76-80) to 39-40 at home.

Boston starter Kutter Crawford (6-8) took the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Crawford struck out seven and walked three.

Wilyer Abreu (No. 2) and Adam Duvall (No. 21) homered for the Red Sox. Abreu was in the starting lineup for the first time in a week after dealing with hand soreness. He hurt his left hand when he slammed into the outfield wall during last Sunday’s game in Toronto.

Abreu’s home run handed the Red Sox a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Chicago led 2-1 after scoring twice in the fifth. Gavin Sheets and Korey Lee each walked, then scored on an Elvis Andrus two-out double.

The White Sox stretched their advantage to 3-1 in the sixth, when Eloy Jimenez doubled, moved to third on an Andrew Vaughn single and scored on Gavin Sheets’ sacrifice fly.

Duvall’s home run trimmed Chicago’s lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth. The game entered a rain delay in the top of the seventh and was then ruled official because the forecast called for continued rain.

 

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Teams trending in all the wrong directions will meet tonight when the visiting Chicago White Sox open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox (75-78) have lost six of their last seven games and 12 of their last 15. They’re in last place in the American League East and three games below .500 for the first time since the second week of the season.

The White Sox (58-95) have lost nine of their last 12 games and are 37 games below the .500 mark for the first time since 2018.

Both teams are coming off lopsided losses Wednesday. Boston allowed a season-high run total in a 15-5 setback against Texas, while Washington beat Chicago 13-3.

Boston’s Brayan Bello allowed eight runs in three innings during Wednesday’s loss. It was the most runs a Red Sox starting pitcher has given up in a game this season.

“Not a good one,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “They put some good swings on pitches in the zone, the command was off, and it’s one of those that we have to turn the page and be ready for the next one.

“That’s a team that, similar to Toronto, Houston, the Dodgers, it’s a fast-break offense, and when they get going it’s hard to stop. And we weren’t able to do that (Wednesday).”

Boston committed its 100th error of the season Wednesday when Rafael Devers made a fielding miscue in the fifth inning. Red Sox second baseman Luis Urias left the game with calf tightness after beating out an infield single in the seventh inning.

The White Sox surrendered 14 hits in Wednesday’s loss, which dropped the team’s road record to 28-50. The Nationals scored in six of the eight innings they came to the plate.

“We didn’t pitch very well, and we didn’t hit,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “Nine free passes (seven walks and two hit batters), a couple errors. There’s not much to really talk about in this game.”

Left-hander Chris Sale (6-4, 4.66 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for Boston on Friday against his former club. Righthander Touki Toussaint (4-7, 5.40) is Chicago’s probable starter.

Toussaint is 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in his career against the Red Sox. His only start against Boston came in 2018 when he was a member of the Atlanta Braves.

Toussaint struck out eight in five innings during Saturday’s 7-6 victory over the Minnesota Twins.

Sale spent six seasons with the White Sox before he was traded to the Red Sox in 2016 for Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe and Victor Diaz. He’s 2-1 with a 3.96 ERA in four career starts against his former team. He recorded 39 strikeouts in 25 innings during those four starts.

Sale had a no-decision in his last start, that ended in the Red Sox’s 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. He allowed a run on two hits and walked two in six-plus innings, with 10 strikeouts. Sale has given up two runs or fewer in seven of his last 11 starts.

“Obviously, we’re in a tough situation,” Sale said. “At least we can go out there and play for pride, and I’m not going to give up. We’re not going to cash it in.”

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Luis Robert Jr. hit two home runs to power the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Robert hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and a solo homer in the sixth. Both home runs came against Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford (2-4). Robert, who went 3-for-4 in the win, also homered in Chicago’s 5-4 triumph over Boston on Saturday. He has 21 home runs this season.

The victory allowed the White Sox to win the final two games in the three-game series after Boston posted a 3-1 victory on Friday night. Chicago’s Andrew Benintendi, who began his career with the Red Sox, went 2-for-4 Sunday and had seven hits in the series.

Jesse Scholtens (1-2) tossed four innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. He gave up two hits, struck out three and walked one. Scholtens replaced starter Tanner Banks with two outs in the third inning.

Keynan Middleton pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save.

Crawford gave up four runs on five hits in six innings. He recorded four strikeouts and walked one.

Boston’s Adam Duvall doubled in the third inning and drove in Justin Turner to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead, but the White Sox grabbed the lead when Robert hit the first of his two home runs to make it a 2-1 game in the fourth. Benintendi also scored on the play.

Duvall collected two of Boston’s five hits.

In the fifth inning, Benintendi hit an RBI double that scored Gavin Sheets to increase the lead to 3-1, and Robert’s solo home run in the sixth capped the scoring.

Sunday’s game ended Boston’s seven-game road trip. The Red Sox went 3-4 in those seven contests.

The loss dropped Boston’s record against teams at or below the .500 mark to 12-15.
