Dream Team Memorabilia Soars in Value

RUNNEMEDE, NJ – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Karl “The Mailman” Malone’s Dream Team memorabilia collection has delivered — with a big assist to Michael Jordan.

The game-worn shoes and jerseys Karl Malone obtained from teammates on the 1992 Summer Olympics squad brought in more than $5 million at auction, according to the website of Goldin Auctions. The auction ended this week.

Jordan’s white autographed No. 9 jersey sold for $3.03 million, with his shoes bringing in $420,000.

Each one of the jerseys was worn during the United States’ 127-76 win over Lithuania on Aug. 6, 1992. Two days later, the Americans drubbed Croatia 117-85 for the gold medal.

The shoes were worn either at the Olympics in Barcelona or at the pre-Olympic Tournament of the Americas.

The first Dream Team was made up of 11 NBA superstars and Christian Laettner, who then was fresh off back-to-back NCAA championships while playing at Duke University.

Selling prices for other the jerseys of other Dream Team members: Larry Bird ($360,000), Earvin Magic Johnson ($336,000), Charles Barkley ($230,400), David Robinson ($116,400), Clyde Drexler ($91,200), Scottie Pippen ($80,400), Karl Malone ($58,800), John Stockton ($55,200), Patrick Ewing ($39,600), Laettner ($39,600) and Chris Mullin ($37,200).

In another special auction, Michael Jordan’s “One of a Kind” USA medal ceremony jacket – a cause for controversy at the Barcelona Olympics because of its Reebok sponsorship over that of Jordan’s Nike brand athletic shoes – is on display at Sotheby’s NYC and is taking bids. The final auction, the last week of June, 2023, will determine the auction price which is estimated to be somewhere near $3m and could go higher as it is one of one, as opposed to Jordan’s many game-worn uniforms.

The collection formerly was displayed at Malone’s Toyota car dealership in Utah. It was featured in the Netflix series “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch.”

PGA Tour: Rookie Hall Holds Lead

DALLAS/FORT WORTH – PGA Tour rookie Harry Hall seeks his first win in his 26th start on Tour after shooting 62-66 to lead the tournament by three strokes.

Harris English aced No. 8, his third hole-in-one on Tour, and the first ace at the 8th hole since 2011. English remains in sole position of second and is three back.

Emiliano Grillo seeks his second PGA TOUR title, almost eight years after winning his first. He shot an impressive 67-65 over first two rounds.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (T-7) has finished T-12 or better in each of his last 13 starts on Tour while defending champion Sam Burns sits T-19 at 3-under in bid to join Ben Hogan as only players to successfully defend the tournament’s title.

Jordan Spieth missed the cut for the first time in 11 appearances at this event after posting back-to-back over-par rounds for the first time at Colonial Country Club (42 rounds) while last week’s phenom Michael Block – playing on a sponsor exemption -followed his first-round (81) with 4-over (74) to miss the cut.

Among the players missing the cut by a stroke were Tour winners Cam Davis, Tony Finau, Sungjae Im, Adam Long, Ryan Palmer and Nate Lashley.

Celtics Extend Series, Emphatically

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Derrick White scored 24 points as the host Boston Celtics staved off elimination for the second consecutive contest with a 110-97 win over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals. The Heat never lead in the game, but they still hold a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven series as they head home for Game 6 on Saturday.

White made 8 of 11 shots — including 6 of 8 from 3-point range — and Boston’s Marcus Smart sank 7 of 12 and 4 of 6, respectively, to highlight his 23-point performance. Smart also had five steals for the second-seeded Celtics.

Jayson Tatum collected 21 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in the victory, and teammate Jaylen Brown scored 21 points while shooting 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Brown entered Thursday having made just 3 of 25 shots from beyond the arc in the series.

The Celtics shot a robust 50.6 percent from the floor (40 of 79) and 41 percent from 3-point range (16 of 39). Those percentages came on the heels of Boston making 51.2 percent of its shots from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc in a 116-99 victory in Game 4 on Tuesday.

Miami’s Duncan Robinson made 7 of 10 shots to score 18 points off the bench. Bam Adebayo collected 16 points and eight rebounds, Haywood Highsmith added 15 points and Jimmy Butler and Caleb Martin each had 14 for the eighth-seeded Heat.

Kyle Lowry scored just five points and committed four of his team’s 16 turnovers while starting in place of the injured Gabe Vincent (sprained left ankle).

Boston bolted out of the blocks by scoring 14 unanswered points to seize a 20-5 lead. Tatum highlighted his 12-point first quarter with an emphatic dunk that gave the Celtics a 28-13 lead, and White finished with 11 points in the period after draining a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

New Awards to Headline “Men in Blazers” Branded Multicasts

NEW YORK – (Staff Report from Official News Release) – The Men in Blazers Media Network, an independent soccer-focused media company based in North America, will expand their content offerings in conjunction with NBC Sports and the Premier League.

“The American Football Awards” will honor the Premier League footballer for the 2022-23 season as voted on by the growing audience of American fans. It’s a bit like the “Golden Globes of Soccer,” as seen through the foreign fans, as opposed to the Hollywood foreign press.

The accompanying “American American Player of the Year” will recognize the best American player in English Football. The first awards show will be seen on NBC on Sunday, May 28, following the Premier League Finals.

The finalists and winners were selected by thousands of fans across the nation.  Men in Blazers aka MiB will debut the women’s ““American Football Awards” this fall after the World Cup and conclusion of the NWSL season, with a unified, platform coming in 2024.

Upbeat Celtics Feel at Home

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – TD Garden has not exactly been the comfy confines but it will have to do for the crucial and pivotol Game 5.

Members of the Boston Celtics were talking about a return trip to South Florida mere moments after the team averted a sweep at the hands of the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

While talk is cheap, the conversation will become real if the Celtics fend off elimination for the second consecutive contest on Thursday when they host the Heat in Game 5 at the Boston Garden.

“We want to come back to Miami,” Jaylen Brown said after the second-seeded Celtics avoided the brooms with a 116-99 victory in Game 4 on Tuesday. They still trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series to the eighth-seeded Heat.

Jayson Tatum scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half Tuesday, with 14 coming during a third quarter in which Boston outscored Miami by a 38-23 margin. All told, Tatum made 11 of 15 shots from the floor after intermission.

Tatum wasn’t alone, either. The Celtics shot 51.2 percent from the floor (43 of 84) for the game and 40 percent from 3-point range (18 of 45).

“Yeah, everybody was in good spirits, everybody was upbeat, and as cliche as it sounds, we just tried to take it one game at a time,” Tatum said. “We didn’t play well the first three games, we didn’t deserve to win, but we didn’t want that to define us, define the season.

“We’ve still got a long uphill battle to go. But (Tuesday) was a good start. Just to try to carry this momentum toward Thursday.”

TD Garden hasn’t been kind to the home tenants in the postseason, however. The Celtics have lost five of their past seven games in Boston.

That said, the Heat had won all six of their home playoff games before Tuesday’s tumble in Miami.

The Heat were denied in their first opportunity to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons. They also were thwarted in their first chance to join the 1998-99 New York Knicks as the lone eighth-seeded teams in the league to advance to the NBA Finals.

Jimmy Butler, who recorded team highs in points (29) and rebounds (nine) on Tuesday, refused to get too down after seeing the team’s initial opportunities go by the boards.

“The only thing I’m going to say is we’ll be OK,” Butler said. “Let’s get back to doing what we’ve always done to get us to this point. Continually have belief in one another, knowing that we are going to win, and we will. We’ve just got to play harder.

“There’s not too much to say with this group because we already know. So we’ve just got to go out there and execute.”

Caleb Martin made his first six shots from the floor on Tuesday and scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half.

“It’s definitely disappointing,” Martin said of the loss. “That would have been a perfect world, perfect situation. But as we know and everybody else knows, we don’t typically get things the easy way over here. So like I said, this is right up our alley. This is the way it goes for us and guys like us. Again, I think it’s only going to prepare us for the long run. This could be good for us.”

Celtics Win Turns Down the Heat

MIAMI – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Boston’s Jayson Tatum collected 33 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting Celtics staved off elimination with a 116-99 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Tatum made 14 of 22 shots from the floor — including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. He also had seven assists for the second-seeded Celtics, who trail 3-1 in the best-of-seven series heading into Thursday’s Game 5 in Boston.

Celtics swingman Jaylen Brown scored 17 points and guard Derrick White added 16 to help the Celtics prevent Miami from becoming the second eighth-seeded team to advance to the NBA Finals. The 1998-99 New York Knicks accomplished the feat during a lockout-shortened season.

Grant Williams scored 14 points off the bench and Al Horford added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who turned the tide by outscoring the Heat 38-23 in the third quarter. Williams had jawed with Heat guard Jimmy Butler in Game 3.

Boston shot 51.2 percent from the floor (43 of 84) for the game and 40.9 percent from 3-point range (18 of 44).

Miami’s Butler overcame a slow start to record 29 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Vincent scored 17 points and Caleb Martin added 16 off the bench for the Heat, who fell to 6-1 at home in the playoffs.

Down by 11 points late in the third quarter, Miami trimmed the deficit to five before Boston countered by scoring 12 straight points to secure a 100-83 lead with 7:25 to play in the fourth. Tatum and Marcus Smart each had five points during that surge.

The Heat moved within 13 with 4:27 to play before Brown converted a three-point play to halt the momentum. The Celtics were not seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Celtics a Game Away From Elimination

MIAMI – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Boston Red Sox find themselves one game away from NBA playoff elimination and the fans of Boston find themselves one game away from full-time baseball season. The Miami Heat shot the lights out and left the Boston Celtics in the dust on Sunday in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Gabe Vincent scored a career-high 29 points in Miami’s 128-102 victory over visiting Boston on Sunday.

Vincent made 11 of 14 shots from the floor — including 6 of 9 from 3-point range — and Duncan Robinson and Caleb Martin scored 22 and 18 points off the bench, respectively.

Jimmy Butler collected 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Heat, who shot a blistering 56.8 percent from the field (46 of 81) and 54.3 percent from 3-point range (19 of 35). Miami improved to 6-0 at home in the playoffs.

Another performance like that in Game 4 on Tuesday in Miami and the eighth-seeded Heat will advance to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons.

“That was a solid, mature, professional approach,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “There is a lot of pent-up stuff here and we’re getting closer, but we still have to finish this off.”

Bam Adebayo scored 13 points and Max Strus added 10 as the Heat seized control of the contest by outscoring the second-seeded Celtics by a 32-17 margin in the third quarter.

“The game was as big as an ocean for everybody,” Adebayo said.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds and Jaylen Brown scored 12 points, although the pair combined to make just 12 of 35 shots from the floor and 1 of 14 from 3-point range.

“Collectively we can point fingers, but in reality, it was just embarrassing,” Brown said.

The Celtics have their backs against the wall. No team in NBA history has overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

“I just didn’t have them ready to play,” Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said. “Whatever it was, whether it was the starting lineup or it was an adjustment, I have to get them in a better place to play — that’s on me.”

Boston whittled a 22-point deficit down to 12 at 61-49 after Marcus Smart converted a three-point play to start the third quarter. Miami answered with a 28-9 run to seize control of the game, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Vincent.

The Heat carried a 93-63 lead into the fourth quarter before both teams opted to rest their stars. Vincent sandwiched 3-pointers around a three-point play and Robinson converted from beyond the arc to extend Miami’s advantage to 112-83 with 4:43 to play.

Miami claimed a 61-46 lead at halftime after shooting a sizzling 57.5 percent from the floor (23 of 40) and 45 percent from 3-point range (9 of 20). Martin sank a trio of 3-pointers to highlight his 11-point performance, while Robinson and Vincent each made a pair from beyond the arc to finish with 10 points apiece.

Miami’s Kevin Love scored five quick points to start the game before exiting after five minutes with an ankle injury. He did not return.

Koepka Wins His Third PGA Championship, Fifth Major

ROCHESTER NY – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – American Brooks Koepka dialed up seven birdies and slammed the door on playing partner Viktor Hovland to win the PGA Championship on Sunday at Oak Hill Country Club, securing his fifth career major title and the first by an active member of LIV Golf.

Koepka stuck his approach at the last hole pin-high and received an ovation as he ascended to the green. He pumped his fist and embraced his caddie after a final-round, 3-under 67, finishing at 9-under 271 for the week.

Koepka won the 2017 and 2018 U.S. Opens and the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championships and battled knee and hip injuries for some time after that. With his fifth major, he surpassed names such as Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els and tied the likes of Byron Nelson and Seve Ballesteros.

Hovland, the 25-year-old Norwegian, made a long birdie at No. 18 to tie Scottie Scheffler for second at 7-under 273. It was his best finish at a major and his third straight top-10 finish.

Trailing by one at the 16th hole, Hovland attempted to get out of a fairway bunker and his ball embedded in the face of the bunker in front of him — the same misfortune that befell Corey Conners of Canada when he led the championship Saturday evening. Hovland was given free relief but had to punch out.

 

Duran Holds Down CF for Red Sox

ANAHEIM – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Jarren Duran is expected to be in center field Monday night for the Boston Red Sox when they play the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif., but it wasn’t such a sure thing not long ago.

Despite a decent spring training (6-for-18), Duran did not make the team to start the season. And he was hitting just .195 at Triple-A Worcester when the Red Sox decided to call him up on April 17.

But he has played in every game since, starting all but two, and has earned his keep. He’s hitting .330 with three homers, 19 RBIs, seven stolen bases and a .917 OPS in 31 games.

It’s a complete turnaround for the former seventh-round pick out of Long Beach State — struggles on the field in recent years resulted in mental health issues that Duran has confronted and managed.

“Oh, he’s great,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “For everything that he has talked about, and he’s been very open about it, you care about him, not only on the field, but off the field. This kid, he went to Puerto Rico in the middle of the pandemic just to keep working on his craft. We were able to connect and I’m very proud of him.”

The Red Sox are hoping to have DH Justin Turner back in the lineup Monday after he had to leave Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres because of soreness in his left knee.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time for Turner, who is having a successful May after struggling somewhat in April. He hit .250 with two homers and eight RBIs in April, but is hitting .316 with three homers and nine RBIs this month.

Right-hander Tanner Houck (3-3, 5.48 ERA) will make his ninth start of the season for the Red Sox. He is 1-1 with a 9.72 ERA in three career games (one start) against the Angels.

Celtics Face Heat in Desperate Situation

MIAMI – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Miami Heat will try to continue their winning ways at home and push the Boston Celtics to the brink of elimination today when their Eastern Conference finals series shifts to Florida.

The eighth-seeded Heat have won all five of their home games in the playoffs thus far. They also have backed the second-seeded Celtics into a corner by winning the first two games of the best-of-seven series in Boston.

Jimmy Butler collected 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Miami’s 111-105 victory over Boston on Friday, while center Bam Adebayo contributed 22, 17 and nine, respectively.

“Jimmy and Bam just really anchored us offensively,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “It’s great when your two best players can lead you, in a place where the ball can go and everybody else is just playing off of those guys.

“Both of them at some point basically guarded everybody on the floor, basically at some point with the switches. They are going to burn a lot of calories on that end, but they have to shoulder massive responsibilities for us on the other end.”
