DUBLIN, Ohio – Cameron Young, who entered the week with Top-3 finishes in his last three starts, has the most Top-fives on Tour this season without a win (5). He is currently among six players tied after 18 holes at The Memorial. That marks the most in tournament history (previously: 4, 1997, 1998).

With an opening 5-under (67), Cameron Smith recorded his lowest score in 17 rounds at the Memorial Tournament. It marks the second time he has posted a sub-par score in his seventh start in the event (previously: 71/R2/2017). Smith has made the cut in the event twice (2017, 2020).

Will Zalatoris (T-7) at (68), has two playoff losses and four additional Top-10s on the season, is one stroke off the lead. He missed cut in only other start at the Memorial Tournament (MC/2018).

In first start since the 2022 Masters Tournament and left wrist surgery in April, 2018 Memorial Tournament winner Bryson DeChambeau opened with a 4-over (76) while Harris English played for the first time since the 2022 Sony Open in Hawaii and hip surgery in February, and posted a 5-over (77).

Chad Ramey withdrew after the first round (back injury).

2014 Memorial Tournament winner Hideki Matsuyama was disqualified for using a non-conforming club (Rule 4.1a). The equipment rules specify what is not allowed (4.c3). Matsuyama apparently applied a substance to his 3-wood club head.

DUBLIN, Ohio – Just like a holiday party held in January, The Memorial comes rolling in the weekend AFTER Memorial Day in the United States of America, but because of the stature of the great Jack Nicklaus, no one seems to care. Certainly, the strong field is indication of a tournament worthy of GOLF’s GOAT.

The tournament holds elevated status with a prize pool of $12 million and a winner’s share of $2,160,000, a take-away of 550 FedEx Cup points Patrick Cantlay enjoyed last season.

The Memorial is one of three PGA Tour events with such elevated status, along with The Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.

Muirfield Village golf club – Jack Nicklaus’ signature course – underwent some renovations in the years 202-21 and its green speed is back up to the traditional Memorial tournament zip. The renovation saw irrigation work done, bunkers rebuilt, the reconstruction of greens, resurfaced tee boxes and length added. The course opened in 1974 and has hosted a PGA Tour event every year since 1976.

Spain’s Jon Rahm, who enters the week No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking and returns as a past event winner (2020). At the 2021 Memorial Tournament, Rahm held a six-stroke lead after the third round, what would be the largest 54-hole lead on Tour that 2021-22 season, but was forced to withdraw on Saturday evening after testing positive for COVID-19.

DUBLIN (Ohio) – After matching 1-under( 71s), the 2019 Memorial Tournament champion, Patrick Cantlay, defeated Collin Morikawa in sudden death. Cantlay takes the lead in the FedExCup points standings. With the win, Cantlay became the seventh multiple winner of the Memorial Tournament

The sudden death playoff was the seventh playoff of the PGA Tour season and first since the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Morikawa’s playoff loss marked his sixth Top-10 finish of the season and third in his last five starts.

Scottie Scheffler narrowly missed first PGA Tour title and second professional victory in Columbus.

A week after missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Patrick Reed(5th/-8) closed with a 3-under 69 to mark his sixth Top-10 finish of the season and first since a T-6 at the Wells Fargo Championship

The Memorial Tournament is one of three tournaments on the PGA TOUR schedule with “elevated status” (others: The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard). The three elevated events offer a larger purse ($9.3 million), a three-year PGA TOUR exemption and, new in 2021, 550 FedExCup points to the winner.

With his win at this season’s Genesis Invitational, T-10 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-6 at this week’s Memorial Tournament, Max Homa became the first player to earn Top-10 finishes in all three events since Bill Haas in 2013.

DUBLIN (Ohio) – The Memorial’s 2019 winner and current leader, Patrick Cantlay birdied his last three holes in bid to become the event’s seventh multiple winner.

After completing 13 holes in Round 2, Jon Rahm (-8) looks to join Tiger Woods as players to successfully defend their Memorial titles.

Overnight with only partial scoring completed, the top two players on the leaderboard were the last two Memorial Tournament winners (Cantlay and Rahm).

First round leader Collin Morikawa teed-off at a late 5:29 pm Collin and was 1-under on the day through 11 holes but is now 2-over on the round through 12 holes after taking a triple bogey on the par-3 12th.

At the time of play suspension, Rickie Fowler was 2-under par on the day through 11 holes and 5-under overall.

DUBLIN (OHIO) – Collin Morikawa posted a 6-under (66) in rain-soaked conditions Thursday morning at the Memorial and he holds a one-shot lead over Adam Long among early starters who completed their rounds before play was suspended for the day.

Morikawa is seeking a second win at Muirfield Village Golf Club, the first was the 2020 Workday Charity Open.

Columbus, Ohio resident and former Ohio State University golfer Bo Hoag posted a (68) before play was suspended, his second sub-70 score in seventh round at Muirfield Village (67) in R-2/2020.

Play was suspended at 12:46 p.m. ET due to thunderstorms and resumed at 2:45 p.m., a delay of one hour, 59 minutes. Play was suspended again at 4:17 p.m. and an attempt to resume was made at 6:30 p.m., but players were removed from the course when another weather-cell developed. Play was suspended for the day at 6:41 p.m. This is the 15th tournament delayed due to inclement weather this season.

Thirty of 46 tournaments, have been delayed, suspended or canceled by inclement weather at the Memorial.

The morning wave of 60 players completed their rounds. No player of the 60 in the afternoon wave completed the round. Round one is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. today at Muirfield Village Golf Club

Jason Day withdrew from the tournament citing back pain and Matt Kuchar withdrew with a forearm injury.

PGA Tour Brunch – 1st Round Preview of The Memorial

Muirfield Village Golf Club underwent major renovations since last season. But, last year, it was the toughest course on tour around the greens. : The two tournaments with the lowest Scrambling percentage during the 2019-20 season were both played at Muirfield Village: 48.4% at The Memorial Tournament and 52.3% at the Workday Charity Open.

There have been just five first-time PGA Tour winners this season: Carlos Ortiz, Vivint Houston Open; Jason Kokrak, The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek; Joel Dahmen, Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship; Sam Burns, Valspar Championship; K.H. Lee, AT&T Byron Nelson. The last time there were fewer than 10 in a season: 2012 (9). Fewest in a season: 4 (1992).

Eight of the top 10 players in the FedExCup standings are in their 20s, led by No. 1 Bryson DeChambeau. The only players 30 or older in the Top 10 are last week’s winner Jason Kokrak (5) and Stewart Cink (8).

Welcome to PGA Tour Brunch – 1st Look at The Memorial

Muirfield Village Golf Club has undergone comprehensive renovations since the conclusion of the 2020 Memorial Tournament, including significant modifications to 12 of the 18 putting surfaces. “This will probably be my last bite at the apple,” said course designer and all-time great Jack Nicklaus at the renovation announcement. “I’ve done little tweaks on the golf course throughout the years, and some significant changes, like the par-3 16th. This time, we are going through the golf course, A to Z, and making sure we do everything at one time.”

The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide is the last of three elevated events on the PGA Tour schedule, following The Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard. Each offers a larger purse ($9.3 million), 50 more FedExCup points for the winner (550 total) than a standard event and a three-year PGA Tour exemption.

With only 12 events remaining until the start of the FedExCup Playoffs, the top four players – who are all in the field – are separated by just 58 points. Bryson DeChambeau leads No. 2 Jordan Spieth by 28 points, with No. 3 Justin Thomas trailing by 29 points and No. 4 Viktor Hovland by 58 points.

Spain’s Jon Rahm, who enters the week No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking, will attempt to join Tiger Woods as the only players to win the Memorial Tournament in consecutive years. Rahm leads the PGA Tour in Top-10s this season with 10 but is in search of his first victory of the season.
