Garrett Crochet

Red Sox, Crochet Prevail vs LA

July 26, 2025 by Digital Sports Desk

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Boston’s Garrett Crochet allowed two solo home runs in the top of the first, but then pitched five shutout innings to help the Boston Red Sox defeat the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 Saturday night.

Crochet (12-4) limited the Dodgers to two runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out 10 and walked two.

It was the fifth time this season Crochet has recorded 10 or more strikeouts and allowed no more than two earned runs in at least six innings.

Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez each homered against Crochet. Ohtani opened the game by hitting his 38th home run of the season. Two batters later Hernandez hit his 16th home run, which was his second in as many games.

Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran each collected three hits for the Red Sox, who also received two hits from Roman Anthony. Duran had two triples and a double.

Boston overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the second. The key hit in the inning was Duran’s two-run triple.

Hyeseong Kim collected two of the Dodgers’ nine hits.

Mookie Betts was not in the Dodgers starting lineup, but did pinch hit with two outs and a runner on first in the ninth. He struck out looking against Aroldis Chapman for the game’s final out. Chapman earned his 18th save.

Betts did not play in Los Angeles’ 5-2 victory on Friday night because he was in Tennessee taking care of a personal matter.

Los Angeles starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw exited the mound with two outs in the fifth. He gave up four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two.

The Dodgers grabbed a 2-0 lead on the first-inning home runs from Ohtani and Hernandez, but Boston took the lead by scoring three runs in the second. After Duran tied the game with his two-run triple, Abraham Toro drove in Duran on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Boston added to its lead in the fifth. Bregman reached on a two-out single and scored on Anthony’s double to make it 4-2.

Ace Crochet

July 12, 2025 by Digital Sports Desk

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet tossed a complete-game shutout and the Boston Red Sox extended their winning streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

Crochet (10-4) held Tampa Bay to three hits, struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter.

It’s the first time Crochet has pitched a complete game in his MLB career. Prior to Saturday he hadn’t pitched more than 8 1/3 innings in a game.

Tampa Bay’s only hits were singles by Yandy Diaz, Curtis Mead and Taylor Walls.

Crochet, who signed a six-year, $170 million contract extension earlier this year, has recorded at least seven strikeouts in each of his last nine outings. He threw 100 pitches, 72 of which were strikes.

His complete game came at a welcome time since Boston starting pitcher Hunter Dobbins left Friday night’s game in the second inning because of an ACL tear.

Tampa Bay received a strong start from Shane Baz, who held Boston to a run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. Baz (8-5) struck out three and walked two. It was his fourth straight quality start.

The Rays have lost five of their last six games.

Boston scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roman Anthony hit a one-out double and scored on a Carlos Narvaez single.

Tampa Bay had a chance to tie the game when it had runners on first and third with one out in the sixth, but Boston first baseman Abraham Toro threw out Walls at the plate when Ha-Seong Kim attempted a safety squeeze. The Rays challenged, but the call was upheld.

The Red Sox prevailed even though they were held to five hits and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The teams will wrap up the four-game series Sunday in the final game before the All-Star break.

Crochet All Sewn-Up by Sox

December 11, 2024 by Digital Sports Desk

DALLAS – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Boston Red Sox acquired All-Star left-hander Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for four highly touted minor league prospects, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday.

The Red Sox are sending catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez to Chicago, according to the reports.

Teel is Boston’s No. 4 prospect and No. 25 in all of Major League Baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. Montgomery is the No. 5 prospect in the Red Sox organization and No. 54 overall. Meidroth and Gonzalez are both top 15 prospects in Boston’s system, according to MLB Pipeline.

Crochet, 25, is coming off an All-Star season, his first as a starter, in which he went 6-12 with a 3.58 ERA in 146 innings over 32 starts for the woeful White Sox. Overall, he is 9-19 with a 3.29 ERA in 104 career appearances (32 starts).

Crochet played last season on a one-year deal worth $800,000 and he is under team control for two more years. He signed a one-year deal with the Red Sox worth an estimated $2.9 million, according to Spotrac. He’ll become an unrestricted free agent in 2027 unless he signs a long-term deal with the club before then.

Teel, 22, was selected No. 14 overall by the Red Sox in the 2023 draft. He hit .288 with 13 home runs, 23 doubles and 78 RBIs between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2024.

Montgomery, 21, was taken No. 12 overall in this year’s draft. He hit .322 with 27 home runs and 85 RBIs with an OPS of 1.187 in his final season at Texas A&M in 2024.

Meidroth, 23, was a fourth-round pick of Boston’s in 2022. He hit .293 with seven HRs and 57 RBIs at Worcester this past season.

Gonzalez, 22, went 4-3 with a 4.73 ERA in 24 appearances (19 starts) at Portland.
