Guardians Avoid Sox Sweep

BOSTON – (Wire Service Report) – Gabriel Arias hit a two-run home run during a six-run second inning that propelled the visiting Cleveland Guardians to an 8-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Arias’ home run, his 10th of the season, gave Cleveland (69-69) a 3-0 lead. The six-run second included an RBI single by Steven Kwan, who later scored on a wild pitch; an obstruction call on Boston catcher Connor Wong that forced in Brayan Rocchio; and an error on left fielder Jarren Duran that allowed Jose Ramirez to score.

The Guardians received a strong pitching performance from Joey Cantillo (4-3), who limited Boston to a run on five hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Kwan had three hits in the win. C.J. Kayfus and Bo Naylor each added two hits for Cleveland, which ended a three-game losing streak. Romy Gonzalez collected two of Boston’s seven hits.

Brennan Bernardino (4-3) took the loss. Bernardino, one of five pitchers the Red Sox used, exited the mound after recording two outs in the first inning. He gave up a run on one hit and walked one.

Jordan Hicks surrendered four of the six runs Cleveland scored in the second.

The victory prevented Boston (78-63) from completing a three-game sweep. The Red Sox won 6-4 Monday, Sept. 1, and 11-7 Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Kwan gave the Guardians a 1-0 lead when he scored on an infield groundout in the first inning.

After Cleveland extended its lead to 7-0, Boston scored in the fourth. Nick Sogard’s single drove in Rob Refsnyder to make it 7-1.

It was 8-1 after Naylor scored on a Kayfus sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Boston’s Nate Eaton started in right field in place of Roman Anthony, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with an oblique injury. Eaton batted in the leadoff spot and went 1-for-3.

Six of Boston’s seven hits in the game were singles.

Red Sox Out-Slug Guardians

BOSTON – (Wire Service Report) – The Boston Red Sox broke open a tie game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to an 11-7 victory over the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night.

Alex Bregman’s RBI single handed the Red Sox (78-62) an 8-7 lead. Jarren Duran followed with an RBI double and then Trevor Story added a two-run double. Three of the four runs were charged to Cade Smith, who allowed four hits and didn’t retire a batter.

Cleveland’s Hunter Gaddis (1-2) pitched one inning and allowed one run before giving way to Smith.

Nathaniel Lowe (No. 18) and Ceddanne Rafaela (No. 16) homered for Boston, which has won three in a row.

Cleveland (68-69) received solo home runs from Jhonkensy Noel (No. 3) and Austin Hedges (No. 4), a two-run home run from David Fry (No. 7) and a three-run home run from Brayan Rocchio (No. 4). All four home runs were hit off Boston starter Garrett Crochet, who allowed seven runs on nine hits in six innings.

Noel’s home run opened the scoring in the second. Boston strung together six straight hits in the bottom of the inning, when it took a 4-1 lead. The inning featured an RBI single by Romy Gonzalez, a two-run single by Rafaela and an RBI single by Roman Anthony.

Three of Cleveland’s four home runs came in the top of the sixth, when the Guardians scored six runs to take a 7-5 lead. Hedges’ home run made it 5-2, Fry’s two-run shot pulled the Guardians within a run and Rocchio’s three-run home run put the Guardians in front 7-5.

Rafaela tied the game by hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Anthony left the game after he struck out in the fourth inning. He grabbed his back and went straight to the clubhouse, and Nate Eaton replaced him in right field. The Red Sox said Anthony exited with left oblique tightness.

Narvaez Pinch Hit Drives Sox

BOSTON – (Wire Service Report) – Timely hitting hasn’t been a problem for the Boston Red Sox in their past two games, and they will aim for their third straight victory on Tuesday when they battle the visiting Cleveland Guardians.

Carlos Narvaez came up with the first pinch hit of his major league career on Monday, and it was the key blow in Boston’s 6-4 victory over Cleveland.

Narvaez came off the bench to hit for Nathaniel Lowe with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, and he delivered on an 0-2 pitch from lefty reliever Erik Sabrowski. The two-run single broke a 3-3 tie.

“I just (saw) one pitch to get comfortable and then I got two strikes already so I just got back to my approach, which is going to the opposite field,” Narvaez told WEEI. “I saw four fastballs in that at-bat, so I tried to put the ball in play. … Glad to drive in two runs there.

“That’s my bread and butter — trying to go to the other field. Sometimes I was not confident earlier in the month trying to pull the ball. … Sometimes I take my chance if it’s 2-0 or 3-1, but as soon as I get two strikes, I just get back to my approach. I know it probably could be better if I do that from the first pitch, but as of now, that’s what’s bringing me back: trying to put the ball in play to the other side.”

Prior to Monday, Narvaez was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as a pinch hitter in his career.

“It’s not an easy thing coming in to pinch-hit,” Narvaez said. “I really admire the guys who do it like (Rob Refsnyder) early in the season, (Romy Gonzalez) early in the season with a lot of pinch hits.”

The Red Sox (77-62) also received a timely hit from Jarren Duran in the fifth inning of their 5-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Duran hit an inside-the-park home run to break a tie and give Boston a 4-1 advantage.

The highlight for Cleveland (68-68) in the Monday loss was a solo home run by first baseman Kyle Manzardo. It was his third long ball in the past four games and his 24th of the season.

Manzardo, 25, made his major league debut last season, when he hit .234 in 53 games.

“I just think he’s turning into a complete hitter,” Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. “Early in the year he was really selling out to the damage, to the homers. He wasn’t taking as many walks or anything.

“Since early July he’s been taking good at-bats. He’s been taking his walks. He’ll take a single the other way, and if you make a mistake, he still has the power to do (hit a homer). He’s really developing into a complete hitter.”

Manzardo and the Guardians will be facing one of the best pitchers in the game Tuesday, when Boston is scheduled to start left-hander Garrett Crochet (14-5, 2.40 ERA) in the second game of the three-game series.

However, after winning nine consecutive decisions, Crochet is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in his past four outings. In 12 career appearances against the Guardians (one start), Crochet is 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA.

Cleveland right-hander Slade Cecconi (5-6, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to start on Tuesday in his first career appearance against the Red Sox. He hasn’t won since July 18, going 0-2 with a 5.35 ERA in his past seven starts.

Red Sox & Guardians: Let’s Play Two?

CLEVELAND – Following a successful series against the leaders of the American League East, the Cleveland Guardians will take aim at the other storied franchise in that division. After rain postponed their series opener on Friday, the Guardians and visiting Boston Red Sox will play a split doubleheader today.

Cleveland extended its winning streak to five games by winning the first two contests of its series against the New York Yankees before falling 5-1 on Wednesday.

“Obviously, we want to win every single day,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.

Cleveland is 11-4 after losing six of its first nine games of the season. The Guardians have won seven of the last nine meetings against the Red Sox.

However, Boston’s scheduled Game 1 starter, right-hander Tanner Houck (0-2, 7.66 ERA), is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in nine career appearances (four starts) versus Cleveland.

Guardians star Jose Ramirez is 14-for-30 with five homers and 11 RBIs in his last seven home games against Boston. He is 2-for-13 against Houck, but one of those hits left the park.

After being roughed up for 12 runs (11 earned) and 10 hits over 2 1/3 innings at Tampa Bay on April 14, Houck yielded only a two-run homer in the first inning, two other hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over six frames of Boston’s 8-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

“Slowly just working your way through it and showing up each and every day with a good attitude, chipping away at it, is kind of the recipe for success,” Houck said.

The veteran will try to help Boston get back on track from dropping the final two contests of a three-game home set versus Seattle. Alex Bregman homered with two RBIs and had half of the team’s four hits in Thursday’s 4-3 loss.

Bregman is 7-for-14 with five RBIs in the last four games. He is batting .320 this season.

“He’s in a good spot. A great start,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said.

In the nightcap on Saturday, the Red Sox will turn to Walker Buehler (3-1, 4.23 ERA), who allowed nine runs and 14 hits — including three homers — over 9 1/3 innings while splitting his first two starts as a member of the Red Sox. But he’s 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in three starts since that rough opening.

The right-hander gave up three walks for a second straight start Monday against the Chicago White Sox on Patriots’ Day, but he permitted only four hits and a run while striking out nine in a season-high seven innings of a 4-2 victory.

Buehler has never faced the Guardians, who will start Ben Lively (1-2, 3.86 ERA) in Game 1. The right-hander yielded four hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings of last Saturday’s 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh.

“That was Ben at his best,” Vogt said.

Lively usually has been at his best versus Boston, going 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts.

Boston star Rafael Devers is 0-for-15 over the last five games overall and 0-for-5 with two strikeouts versus Lively.

Touted prospect Doug Nikhazy is slated to make his major league debut while starting Game 2 for Cleveland. A second-round pick in 2021, the left-hander was 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA and fanned 22 in four 2025 starts for Triple-A Columbus.

 

Red Sox Head to Cleveland

Yet to lose a series at home, the Guardians open a three-game set Friday night against the visiting Boston Red Sox, who look to avoid their third straight defeat.

Despite losing 5-1 to the first-place New York Yankees on Wednesday, Cleveland took two of three in the home set, and sit 7-2 at home.

“Obviously, we want to win every single day,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.

Cleveland had won five straight prior to Wednesday, and is 11-4 after losing six of its first nine contests. The Guardians have won seven of their last nine against the Red Sox.

However, scheduled Boston starter Tanner Houck (0-2, 7.66 ERA) has a 1.78 ERA while going 1-1 in four career starts versus Cleveland. The right-hander allowed two runs and eight hits over 15 innings of his two starts against the Guardians in 2024. Overall, Houck is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in nine appearances, four starts, against Cleveland.

Cleveland’s Steven Kwan, batting .364 in the last 13 games, is 2-for-7 with a pair of walks versus Hauck. Fellow Guardians star Jose Ramirez, 14-for-30 with five homers and 11 RBIs in his last seven home games versus Boston, is only 2-for-13 all-time against Houck, but one of those hits left the park.

Entering this contest, Houck looks to post back-to-back strong starts for the first time in 2025. After being roughed up for 12 runs — 11 earned — and 10 hits over 2 1/3 innings at Tampa Bay on April 14, Houck yielded only a first-inning, two-run homer to Matt Thaiss, two other hits with two walks and struck out seven over six innings of Boston’s 8-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.

“I’ve been scuffling, even in spring training, with delivery stuff and just getting back on track, (but) slowly just working your way through it and showing up each and every day with a good attitude, chipping away at it, is kind of the recipe for success,” Houck said.

The veteran will try to help Boston get back on track after it dropped the final two of a three-game home set versus Seattle after winning six of seven. Alex Bregman homered, drove in a pair and produced half of the Red Sox’s four hits in Thursday’s 4-3 loss to the Mariners.

Bregman is 7-for-14 with five RBIs in the last four games, and batting .320 on the season.

Yankees Advance to World Series

CLEVELAND – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – New York’s Juan Soto hit a three-run home run with two outs in the 10th inning and the visiting Yankees advanced to their first World Series since 2009 with a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night.

Giancarlo Stanton of New York hit a game-tying two-run home run in the sixth inning for the Yankees, who won Game 5 of the American League Championship Series after trailing through the first five innings and never taking the lead until Soto’s heroics. Soto had three hits while teammate Gleyber Torres had two.

In the 10th, Soto hit four consecutive foul balls against Guardians right-hander Hunter Gaddis (1-1) before smashing a 1-2 fastball over the wall in right-center field. It was his second home run in two games and third of the series.

Stanton hit home runs in three consecutive games and had four in the series. Four New York relievers held Cleveland scoreless over the final 5 1/3 innings with Luke Weaver (1-0) pitching the last two innings to earn the win.

Bo Naylor doubled home brother Josh Naylor to give the Guardians a lead in the second inning, and Steven Kwan added an RBI single in the fifth. Cleveland right-hander Tanner Bibee held New York scoreless until Stanton hit his two-run homer with two outs in the sixth.

Torres led off the game with a single but was thrown out at home trying to score from first on a Soto double.

Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Josh Naylor singled with one out and scored on Bo Naylor’s two-out double that came on the 10th pitch of the at-bat against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon.

It was the first time a brother drove in a brother in a postseason game since the 2001 AL Division Series when the Oakland Athletics’ Jeremy Giambi brought home Jason Giambi.

The Guardians got to Rodon again in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead when Kwan’s two-out single knocked in Andres Gimenez, who had doubled.

The Yankees opened the sixth with singles from Torres and Soto before Aaron Judge grounded into a double play. Stanton followed by working the count full before crushing a game-tying home run to left center with a 117.5 mph exit velocity.

After Weaver pitched a perfect ninth inning, he worked around Kyle Manzardo’s one-out single in the 10th, getting Jose Ramirez to line out to center and getting Lane Thomas to fly out to Soto in right field to end the game.

Guardians Ruin Red Sox Holiday

BOSTON – Cleveland pinch hitter Will Brennan pulled an 87 mph slider straight down the right field line at Fenway Park and it travelled 387 feet for a two out, two run homer. It was Brennan’s first of the season and gave the Guardians a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning of today’s 11:13am Patriots’ Day matinee. It was all they’d need as Cleveland went on to win 6-0 shut-out victory.

The annual early game, drawing 33,008 fans, coincides each year with the running of the Boston Marathon and comes on a holiday in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Cleveland scored two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning when Jose Ramirez hit a riccochet grounder, deflected by Sox 1B Tristan Casas and dribbling past 2B Emmanuel Valdez. The grounder made its way to right field, scoring Guardians’ SS Brayan Rocchio from third.

Sox RF Wilyer Abreu misfielded and forced a misguided throw which scored LF Steven Kwan. The play was judged an error and Rocchio’s run was earned but Kwan’s run scored was deemed unearned.

The Guardians continued to score runs in pairs, tallying two more insurance runs in the visiting ninth. The key hits were a double by Cleveland  No. 8 hitter in 3B Gabriel Arias to score Brennan and an RBI single by No. 9 hitter Rocchio to score Arias who had previously stolen third base.

The first five innings of the game produced quite a pitcher’s duel as Cleveland’s SP Xzavion Curry threw a two hitter with one walk and a strike-out while Boston starter Kutter Crawford tossed 5.2 innings of shut-out ball, allowing only two hits and no walks. He struck out six Guardians while throwing 92 pitches and 63 strikes.

Boston was held to three hits on the day while Cleveland knocked the Sox bullpen around and recorded nine hits.

Cleveland reliever Tim Herrin earned the win (1-0) while Boston’s Brennan Bernadino (0-1) was charged with the loss.

 

 

Sox-A-Pa-Loser

CLEVELAND – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The errors keep piling up for the Boston Red Sox, who face the host Cleveland Guardians in the rubber match of a three-game series on Thursday. Boston matched its season high with three miscues in a 5-2 loss on Wednesday and leads the American League with 43 errors. The Red Sox committed all three errors in the fourth inning on Wednesday, leading to a pair of Cleveland runs.

“It’s frustrating because we’re working,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It’s not lack of effort, it’s not lack of work. It is who we are right now. At some point, you have to slow the game down … they’re trying; right now it’s just not happening for us.”

Boston has lost four of its last five games, while Cleveland has won six of its last 10. Guardians designated hitter Josh Bell has driven in a run in six straight games.

“Josh was pretty locked in after that error,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said after the win. “You could tell he wanted to get some payback. He had a pretty eventful night. There wasn’t much that went on out there that he wasn’t a part of.”

Cleveland will send right-hander Aaron Civale (1-1, 2.04 ERA) to the mound in the series finale. He returned from the injured list after missing 48 games with a strained left oblique and tossed five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins last Friday.

Civale, 27, was pleased with his performance after missing large gaps of time due to various injuries over the past two years.

Red Sox Face Guardians

CLEVELAND – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Cleveland Guardians outfielder Will Brennan boasts an unremarkable track record, but the 25-year-old Colorado native may hold the key to the team’s search for offensive consistency.

Brennan will look to continue his hot streak when the Guardians open a three-game series against the visiting Boston Red Sox tonight. Cleveland has won two straight, while Boston is beginning a six-game road trip after losing the final three games of a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.

After batting .204 in April and struggling for most of May, Brennan is 11-for-21 (.524) in his past six games. He made his major league debut last year, appearing in 11 late-season games.

“I’m just growing up every single game up here,” Brennan said. “You have to take a step back and look at what’s going on. It’s pretty awesome to see what you’re doing every day. You’re playing in the big leagues. Struggle comes along with that.”

Cleveland also received a much-needed boost last week from first baseman Josh Naylor and second baseman Andres Gimenez, who were a combined 20-for-50 (.400) as the Guardians went 4-3 on a road trip to Baltimore and Minnesota last week.

Cleveland’s biggest need is more production at the bottom of the order. Brennan could help address that issue with his continued development.

“This might sound dramatic,” Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan said, “but he might be one of our best players once he gets going. He has contact, power, he can run and has a great arm. If he gets going, I think we can be in a really good position.”

The Guardians are beginning a six-game homestand with the series against Boston, which is 30-30. The Red Sox have scored a total of five runs during their three-game skid.

“I don’t want to sound pessimistic or negative, but we have to do it,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “We can talk all the talk. We can say that we’re better than this and all that. But at the end, we have to be better. We have to go out there and perform.”

The Red Sox will send left-hander James Paxton (1-1, 4.26 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. He allowed one run and struck out eight over five innings in a no-decision against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.

Paxton pitched a total of 21 2/3 innings over the previous three seasons due to a number of injuries. He has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his first four outings this season, logging 27 strikeouts in 19 innings.

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” Paxton said. “Coming back through the minor leagues, I think I was topping out at 96, 97 (mph with the fastball). But it’s just not the same atmosphere as pitching in the big leagues. I’m just going out there and letting it rip and it’s feeling good coming out.”

Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez is 2-for-14 against Paxton, who is 1-3 with a 5.47 ERA in five career starts against the Guardians.

Cleveland will counter with right-hander Shane Bieber (4-3, 3.72 ERA), who allowed seven runs over four innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.

Bieber has gone 3-3 with a 5.50 ERA in six career games (five starts) vs. Boston. He yielded two runs over seven frames in a 5-2 road victory over the Red Sox on April 28.

Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is 3-for-13 (.231) against Bieber with two home runs.
