Bradley Takes the BMW Championship

CASTLE ROCK – Keegan Bradley, the USA’s Ryder Cup captain for 2025, rode patriotic cheers to victory at the BMW Championship as he shot even-par 72 in the final round Sunday for a 12-under-par 276 at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado.

It capped a dramatic resurgence for Bradley, who was named the US Ryder Cup captain last month and was the last man (No. 50) in the field this week.

Yet, his seventh PGA Tour win means Bradley will enter the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta next week in fourth place at 6 under based on the staggered start used at the season’s final tournament.

Bradley, who was not selected as a captain’s pick on the 2023 Ryder Cup team, heard cheers from the gallery of “Let’s go captain” and “U-S-A” everywhere he went. Bradley took a lead he would not relinquish with a par on the 537-yard, par-4 10th hole that broke a tie with Australian Adam Scott (72), who had a three-putt bogey on the hardest hole on the course.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (72) tied for 33rd at the BMW, but he enters East Lake as the top seed and will start at 10 under par. Xander Schauffele (71, tied for fifth) will be second at 8 under par and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who withdrew with a back injury from the BMW, will be third at 7 under.

Sam Burns shot a final-round-best 7-under-par 65 to finish tied for second with Scott and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg (71) at 11-under 277. It’s the fourth career runner-up finish for Burns, who had eight birdies in his round and narrowly missed a bunker shot on the par-4 18th hole that would have tied the lead.

Burns’ lone bogey on the par-5 14th slowed his rally, but he bounced back with consecutive birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to enter the Tour Championship ninth in FedEx Cup points.

Australian Cam Davis (66) led the field with 24 birdies on the week and tied for fifth at 8-under 280 with Tommy Fleetwood of England (69) — who played his way into the Tour Championship as he moved from 31st to 22nd in the FedEx Cup standings — plus Schauffele and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim (70).

Chris Kirk (69) played his way into East Lake as he rose from 32nd to 26th after a tie for ninth with Sweden’s Alex Noren (75).

He has won four signature events, the Masters, The Players and the Olympic gold medal in 2024. … Xander Schauffele (+550) shot a closing 63 on Sunday to tie for second last week, following a win at The Open and a T9 at the Olympics. … Rory McIlroy (+1200) tied for 68th last week and missed The Open cut but is also the only three-time winner of the FedEx Cup and finished fourth here in 2023. … Collin Morikawa (+1400) has 12 consecutive top-25 finishes worldwide as he seeks his first win since last fall. … Viktor Hovland (+1800) has had an uneven season, but the defending champion is coming off a T2 last week. … Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) vaulted to third in the standings with last week’s win that came on the heels of a bronze medal.

Cantlay Shoots for BMW

DENVER – The BMW Championship is currently the only leg of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs that rotates venues each year. Patrick Cantlay has shown he can bag BMW wins no matter which course is up for its turn.

But the 2024 edition of the tournament presents an entirely different challenge: an 8,130-yard track at Castle Pines Golf Club in the thin air of Colorado.

Cantlay, the 2021 and 2022 champion at the BMW, and the rest of the 50-player field will need to prepare for the unusual distances their shots travel at altitude, plus the other trials that come with this course layout.

“It’s a longer walk, I’ll tell you that,” Cantlay said Tuesday. “There’s going to be some tired caddies at the end of this week with the uphill and the downhill and the 8,100 yards. The ball is going farther, but we’ve got to walk all that way.”

The course is set to become the longest in PGA Tour history, the result of golfers’ driving distance combined with the unique environmental circumstances in the Rocky Mountains. The BMW hasn’t been played in Colorado since 2014.

Castle Pines is 6,200 feet above sea level.

“I think the altitude, with all the help we have with the TrackMans and the devices, it’s pretty easy to see how far it’s going,” Cantlay said. “We learn new golf courses all the time, so I don’t think it’ll be too big of a change or too difficult.”

Cantlay had a memorable playoff win at the 2021 BMW Championship over Bryson DeChambeau. They both torched the course, Caves Valley in Maryland, for a 27-under final score. Cantlay went on to win the 2021 FedEx Cup and defended his BMW title the next year at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club.

 

 

The World No. 9 said he doesn’t know why he’s found particular success winning an event that changes scenery each year. He cited his history of playing well in the warm weather of August.

“This tournament in general is played on bentgrass greens, which I tend to putt well, and I’ve had some events, some BMW events where I’ve putted well, so this week is no different,” Cantlay added.

Cantlay hasn’t won on tour since that 2022 BMW. He enters the week ranked ninth in FedEx Cup points, guaranteed to make it to the tour’s season finale, the Tour Championship, next week for a chance at a second FedEx Cup title.

“I feel good about my game,” Cantlay said. “I’d say my results have been going in the right direction the last few months. Had a poor first round last week, but other than that, I played really well the last three days. So carry some of that momentum into this week.”

Adam Scott Tops Busy Leaders at BMW

WILMINGTON – Fourteen-time PGA Tour winner Adam Scott holds a one-stroke lead after the second round of the BMW Championship, his 17th 36-hole lead/co-lead on the PGA Tour.

Three Masters Tournament winners that’ve been or currently are ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking are T-2 or better: Scott (1st), Scottie Scheffler (T-2) and Jordan Spieth (T-2). Scott and Spieth rank Nos. 3 and 4 in career PGA Tour wins among players that qualified for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

PGA Tour rookie Cameron Young (T-2) has five runner-up finishes this season and is the highest-ranked player in the Official World Golf Ranking without a win.

Bradley Leads BMW After 18 Holes

WILMINGTON – The 2018 BMW Championship winner, Keegan Bradley,tied his career-low nine-hole score (29) and holds one-stroke lead after 18 holes of the 2022 version of the tournament.

After playing his way into the BMW Championship via a T-5 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Adam Scott is projected to move from No. 45 to No. 13 if he keeps up his pace. Scott hasn’t qualified for the TOUR Championship since 2019.

Harold Varner III and Shane Lowry, both T-3, seek their first TOUR Championship start and are slated for the Top 30.

Defending FedEx Cup Champion and 2021 BMW Championship winner Patrick Cantlay opens with 68 (T-13). No player has successfully defended his BMW Championship title since the tournament became a FedEx Cup Playoffs event in 2007.

FedEx Cup Playoffs Continue at BMW

WILMINGTON – The BMW Championship, the second event of the FedExCup Playoffs, will determine the 30 players who will qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale, the TOUR Championship. The BMW Championship is the oldest non-major on the PGA Tour schedule, dating back to 1899. The Wilmington Country Club is playing host, marking the PGA Tour’s first-ever event in the state of Delaware and the 10th different venue to host the BMW Championship since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007.

Defending FedEx Cup Champion and 2021 BMW Championship winner Patrick Cantlay sits at No. 7 in the FedExCup standings. Cantlay seeks to become the first player to defend his BMW Championship title since the tournament became a FedEx Cup Playoffs event in 2007. If Cantlay goes on to win the FedEx Cup title, he would be the first to win the season-long race in backto-back years and third player to win it multiple times (Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy). There have been four occasions where a player has won the BMW Championship en route to capturing the FedExCup: Tiger Woods(2007, 2009), Billy Horschel (2014) and Patrick Cantlay (2021).

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is making his third appearance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, advancing to the TOUR Championship in each of his first two seasons on Tour (No. 5 in 2019-20, No. 22 in 2020-21) with Top-25 finishes in both BMW Championship starts (T20/2020, T22/2021). Scheffler has won four times this season, including the Masters Tournament, and looks to become the second player to win the Masters and the FedEx Cup in the same season (Jordan Spieth, 2014-15).

Eight rookies have advanced to the BMW Championship: Joohyung Kim, Taylor Moore, Taylor Pendrith, Mito Pereira, Davis Riley, Alex Smalley, Sahith Theegala and Cameron Young, with four of the eight sitting inside the top 30 in the FedExCup standings: Young (13), Kim (25), Riley (26) and Theegala (27).

There has not been a season in the FedEx Cup era in which more than two rookies qualified for the TOUR Championship (seasons with 2: 2015-16, 2016-17, 2019-20). Two rookies have won this season (Chad Ramey/Corales Puntacana Championship, Joohyung Kim/Wyndham Championship).

“Patty Ice” Wins at the BMW

OWINGS MILLS – Patrick Cantlay made a 17’6” putt for birdie on the sixth extra hole to defeat Bryson DeChambeau and win his fifth PGA Tour title. In doing so, Cantlay overtook the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup rankings. Cantlay became the first three-time winner of the 2020-21 season and first 54-hole leader/co-leader to convert for the win since Phil Mickelson at the PGA Championship, a span of 15 events

DeChambeau moved from No. 8 to No. 3 in the FedExCup rankings with his eighth Top-10 finish of the season.

The BMW Championship marked the fourth consecutive week to feature a playoff and 14th of the season.

In his first FedExCup Playoffs start, Erik van Rooyen (5th) closed with a bogey-free 7-under 65 to earn a berth into the Tour Championship; played his final 69 holes without a bogey.

DeChambeau Cards a 60 to Lead BMW

OWINGS MILLS – Bryson DeChambeau missed a 6-foot, 3-inch birdie putt on the final hole and posted a career-low 12-under (60) for the round. Prior to missing the putt on No. 18, he was 13-for-13 inside 10 feet (including 3-for-3 from 4-8 feet) during the round.

Currently at (+11.135) when play was suspended, Patrick Cantlay would set the record for lowest Strokes Gained: Putting through the first two rounds of a PGA Tour event in the ShotLink era (2003-present)

Sergio Garcia, who entered the week No. 44 in the FedExCup, is bogey-free through two rounds for the third time in his Tour career.

Friday play was suspended due to a dangerous weather situation at 4:32pm (EDT) and resumed at 6:18pm (EDT) – (1 hour, 46 minutes). Play was suspended due to darkness at 7:40pm (EDT), with 15 players yet to complete their round.

The second round resumed at 8:30am (EDT) this morning.

Rahm, McIlroy & Burns Lead at BMW

OWINGS MILLS – World No. 1 and defending BMW Championship winner Jon Rahm holds a share of the 18-hole lead for the second consecutive week while 2012 BMW Championship winner Rory McIlroy tied his lowest score of the season with a (64) same as R-4/Waste Management Phoenix Open).

In his BMW Championship debut, Sam Burns posted a (64) for the fourth time in his last eight rounds on the PGA Tour.

The top 30 players in the FedExCup at the conclusion of the BMW Championship will advance to the season-ending Tour Championship
