Red Sox Take Series vs NY Mets

July 24, 2023 by Digital Sports Desk

Sunday Night Baseball: It Wasn’t Pretty

BOSTON – If there’s a Hall of Fame for Fundamentally Sound Major League Baseball games, the Sunday Night game between the Mets and Red Sox might qualify for the worst of the worst.

Sox 3B Rafael Devers homered and Adam Duvall collected two hits, two RBIs and scored a run to help the Boston Red Sox defeat the visiting New York Mets 6-1 on Sunday night in the final game of a three-game series.

Devers capped the scoring by hitting a solo home run — his 24th homer of the season — in the seventh inning.

Connor Wong had three hits for Boston, which had 15 hits in the game. Devers, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran and Enrique Hernandez also had two-hit games for Boston. Masataka Yoshida (0 for 5) was the only player in Boston’s batting order who didn’t collect at least one hit.

Brandon Nimmo collected two of New York’s six hits.

Boston’s Chris Murphy (1-0) allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. The left-hander, one of seven pitchers Sox Manager Alex Cora used in the game, gave up three hits, struck out three and walked two.

New York’s Carlos Carrasco (3-4) allowed five runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings (58 pitches). He failed to complete five innings for the fifth time in his last seven starts.

The teams split the first two games in the series. New York won the opener 5-4, but Boston won the second matchup 8-6.

Duvall’s single in the first inning scored Justin Turner to give Boston a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox collected seven consecutive hits in the third, when they scored four runs to extend their lead to 5-0. The inning included an RBI double by Duvall that scored Turner, an RBI single by Casas that scored Duvall, and an RBI single by Yu Chang that scored Casas. Wong added the fourth run when he scored on Drew Smith’s wild pitch.

The Mets scored in the sixth on a Francisco Lindor single that drove in Danny Mendick, who reached on a walk.

Patriots Sign Picks Ahead of Camp

July 24, 2023 by Digital Sports Desk

FOXBORO – New England cornerback Christian Gonzalez and defensive pass rusher Keion White signed their rookie contracts with the New England Patriots on Friday, getting their top two draft picks in the door before the official start of training camp.

Gonzalez was drafted 17th overall after the Patriots moved down in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers from No. 14. The Oregon product was the third cornerback selected in the first round.

“I’m glad Gonzo was there,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of the selection. “I think when you just go and look for one guy and then he’s not there, there’s other players in the draft that can help us, as well. But he’s been great to work with, and I look forward to getting him ready to go for training camp.”

White, the 46th pick in the draft, had 7.5 sacks at Georgia Tech in 2022 and previously played at Old Dominion.

TL’s Sunday Sports Notes | July 23

July 23, 2023 by Terry Lyons

While We’re Young (Ideas) on a Busy Week in Sports

BOSTON – Last week, we enjoyed a fake dateline and a fake British Open golf preview to show the open-ended dangers of trusting AI too much, especially before it’s ready for primetime. This week, we’re posting just as the final round of The Open begins at Royal Liverpool, in England.

The Open is being played a few miles from Penny Lane (which doubles as the name of our dog). Royal Liverpool last hosted The Open in 2014 when Rory McIlroy held on to win with a two-stroke cushion, despite his own (71) or (-1) in the final round. That Sunday, McIlroy’s competitors shot: T-2 Rickie Fowler (67); T-2 Sergio Garcia (66); 4th Jim Furyk (65), all in a mad dash to catch the 54-hole leader.

This week, it’s been a blast to listen to “The Open Radio” as background music while attending to other duties. Just to state the obvious: There is no better broadcast in the world of sports, maybe the world of everything. The infectious “Mrs. Doubtfire” approach to calling a 72-hole endurance test is a treasure to behold.

United States’ broadcasters and viewers think the world of Jim Nantz’s efforts on the PGA Tour, especially at The Masters. The Open broadcast makes Nantz’s famous, “Hello Friends,” or catch-phrase “a tradition unlike any other,” seem like locker room profanity.

Instead, let us present:

  • Marcus Buckland
  • Sue Thearle
  • Ron Jones
  • Matt Adams
  • Sophie Walker
  • Raymond Burns
  • Alison Walker
  • Paul Eales
  • Harry Ewing
  • SiriusXM’s Maureen Madill and Carl Paulson

Maureen Elizabeth Jane Madill is the gem. Her married name is Garner and she was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Madill won the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in 1979 and the British Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1980. She turned pro but didn’t have much success and turned to broadcasting where she’s worked for the British Broadcasting Company (BBC Sport) calling the Scottish Open, the PGA Championship, and of course, The Open.

Here’s a glimpse of Ms. Madill’s typical delivery:

“We were stationed in front of the telly watching the lengthy playoff for the Made in Himmerland title in Denmark between Spaniard Nacho Elvira and home hero Rasmus Hojgaard. We had no particular favourite for the trophy but acknowledged how fabulous it would be for Rasmus and the partisan galleries if the Dane could manage to pull it off. Elvira had ascended the 18th tee in the final round with a one-shot lead but was relieved to hole a nasty little one for bogey to fall back into a playoff with Rasmus, who’d shot 64 and been finished for ages.

The 18th was a bit of a brute of a hole with a very testing tee shot, trouble lurking everywhere. The pair shared pars on five occasions before Elvira finally came unstuck on the sixth time of asking and the title was won by a Dane for the first time in its history.”

Her go-to line is that a player is approaching “a tricky hole,” and her overall descriptions never fail.

The other killer phrases are when a player has to “Tidy-Up” to get his par or when the commentators wonder about Scottie Scheffler’s “Schh-edule” (schedule).

THE BUSY WEEKEND IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER: It’s been a busy week in sports and it’s getting busier by the day.

  • Major League Soccer held its All-Star break and fell to mighty Arsenal, 0-5. The Premier League power dominated the MLS stars, even though Arsenal is in its preseason preparations. The MLS Stars, coached by former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, were outshot 16-7 overall.
  • The Open is fully underway at Royal Liverpool, as noted above. It is the last of professional golf’s majors for 2023.
  • The United States Women’s National Team is in the preliminary round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, being staged in Australia and New Zealand. The USA pool includes:
  • United States
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Viet Nam – the USA claimed a victory over Viet Nam, 3-0. That’s something that could not be said in 1975.
  1. Baseball is Back in Full Action after the MLB All-Star Break.
  2. The Premier Lacrosse League All-Star Game
  3. NFL Training Camps are opening with most clubs having had their rookies report July 18 and the veterans this coming Tuesday, Jul;y 25.
  4. SlamBall Returns. (You’ve read all about it here)!

HERE NOW THE NOTES: NBA Legend, LA Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, UCLA and Power Memorial champion Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is making as much impact in 2023 as he did in 1968 (when he changed his name from Lew Alcindor to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Noble, Powerful Servant ) or 1971 (when he won his first NBA title along with Oscar Robertson and the Milwaukee Bucks) or from 1975-1989 when, as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, he was “Sky-Hooking” his way to become one of – if not the – greatest player in National Basketball Association history.

Your dedicated columnist worked with KAJ from 1981 through 1989 but very little beyond. On the other hand, at times my former employer allowed for work far beyond the years a player competed on the court. Up until his retirement in 1989, KAJ was “a bit of a handful.” He was quite aloof in terms of his association with the people who promoted the NBA Players as a whole and NBA teams and the league with all systems on “full speed ahead.”

To be clear, KAJ performed on the court as well as any player in history and he lived-up to his obligations to do interviews, especially at tough times during the NBA Playoffs or Finals. But, he did so grudgingly – the complete opposite of many of his peers, such as Julius Erving, Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Wes Unseld, Willis Reed or Walt Frazier.

The latter group set an important tone in their respective team locker rooms and forged an air of cooperation that brought the NBA from the doldrums of tape-delayed NBA Finals games to global dominance in the sports world. In a pregame open locker, media availability session, KAJ would very often be at his locker, but he would be totally engrossed in a book he was reading – sending a “Please Do NOT Disturb” message to all passers-by, near and far.

At one point during the 2009 NBA Finals, the retired KAJ was traveling with his team and situated in a quiet Lakers team locker room, in his usual pose of reading a book off in a corner. This reporter was, coincidentally, in the locker at the same time, but there to see a dear friend – LA Lakers athletic trainer Gary Vitti – who had a few seconds of down time as the entire team was out on the court and warming up for that night’s game.

Seeing KAJ and in no way in need of his time, I felt it important to let him know that the parent of his friend and longtime Lakers PR man, Josh Rosenfeld, had just passed away after an extended illness. KAJ was well aware of the situation but not the death.

As only the great Rosenfeld could do, he had inserted a line of very dry humor in the death notice issued to his closest friends. I took the liberty of reading it to KAJ as he sat quietly and extended his sincere condolences to our mutual friend. It read in part, “In lieu of flowers, please send job offers.”

Kareem laughed out loud with a deep, “Har, Har”– as he looked me in the eye knowing how loyal a friend I was to his former colleague, and world traveling companion through Lakers’ trips all over the USA, all of his championships and NBA exhibitions and functions all over the world.

Upon returning to the other side of the locker to bid good-bye as a few players returned to the locker, Vitti and a small group of assist athletic trainers, equipment managers and video room techs gazed in amazement, asking, “What did you say to him? We haven’t seen ‘Capt’ laugh like that in 10 years.”

Now 76 years old and still a dozen years older than yours truly, KAJ has turned to this same platform (Substack) to share his point of view in a way very few writers have ever had the talent to do so.

Quite frankly, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s column is the best of its kind – maybe the best writing of any kind on any platform or publication available today.

Red Sox Master Long Ball vs, Mets

July 23, 2023 by Digital Sports Desk

BOSTON – Red Sox 1B Triston Casas hit two home runs as Boston ended a three-game losing streak by beating the visiting New York Mets 8-6 on Saturday night. Casas hit a solo shot in the second inning, and a two-run home run that broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth. It was the first multi-homer game in Casas’ major league career.

Boston also received solo home runs from Jarren Duran and Yu Chang and a two-run homer from Justin Turner. Duran’s homer came in the first inning, Chang went deep in the fifth and Turner hit his home run in the seventh.

Four of the five home runs came against Mets starter Max Scherzer (8-4), who gave up five runs on six hits in six innings. Scherzer struck out seven and walked two.

Boston starter James Paxton (6-2) limited the Mets to three runs (two earned) on three hits in six innings. He recorded seven strikeouts and one walk.

Boston built a 2-0 lead on home runs from Duran and Casas, but the Mets went in front by scoring three runs in the fourth. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso scored on Jeff McNeil’s two-out single, and McNeil came around to score on the play when catcher Jorge Alfaro threw the ball into center field attempting to throw him out at second.

Chang’s home run tied the game in the fifth before Casas put Boston in front, 5-3, by hitting his 14th home run of the season.

Boston took an 8-3 lead in the seventh. Masataka Yoshida’s RBI single drove in Duran before Turner hit his two-run homer.

The Mets, who beat the Red Sox 5-4 earlier Saturday in the conclusion of Friday’s suspended game, scored three times in the ninth. Alonso tripled and scored on a Francisco Alvarez single, Mark Vientos drove in Alvarez with a single and Brett Baty’s single scored Vientos to make it 8-6.

Kenley Jansen recorded the final out to earn his 21st save.

Round 2 at The Open

July 21, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

HOYLAKE – Amateur Christo Lamprecht made quite an impression in Liverpool and it wasn’t at 10 Mathew Street. Lamprecht – an amateur who will enter his senior year at Georgia Tech this Fall – accomplished a lot in Round 1 of The Open at Royal Liverpool. Here’s a brief go of it:

  • First amateur to hold the lead/co-lead after any round on TOUR sincePaul Dunne at the 2015 Open Championship (R3)
  • First amateur to hold the 18-hole lead/co-lead on TOUR since Tom Lewis at the 2011 Open Championship
  • First player to hold the 18-hole lead/co-lead in his PGA TOUR debut since Sepp Straka at the 2018 Fortinet Championship
  • First player to hold the 18-hole lead/co-lead in his major championship debut since Andrew Landry at the 2016 U.S. Open
  • Lowest first-round score (66) by an amateur in a major championship since Lewis carded a 65 at the 2011 Open Championship
  • Lowest score by an amateur in any round of a major championship since Matti Schmid carded a 65 in the second round of the 2021 Open Championship

As you’d expect in a major professional golf tournament, Lamprecht wasn’t alone. Popular Brit, Tommy Fleetwood posted his fourth 18-hole lead/co-lead on TOUR and second of the current season. Fleetwood is one of nine players with multiple 18-hole leads/co-leads this season.

  • It’s Fleetwood’s second career lead/co-lead after any round in a major (2017 U.S. Open; finished fourth)
  • Fleetwood’s opening-round 66 is his 11th score of 66 or better in majors

HOYLAKE – The Open Championship is the fourth and final major of the PGA Tour season. This is the 151st playing of The Open and the 13th at Royal Liverpool Golf Club (first since 2014).

World No. 2 and 24-time PGA Tour winner Rory McIlroy, who won last week’s Genesis Scottish Open, won The Open Championship the last time it was held at Royal Liverpool (2014). McIlroy has won four majors (2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, 2014 PGA Championship) but none since the start of the 2014-15 season. McIlroy has 19 “Top-10s” in majors since his most recent title, the most of any player in that span. He is making his 59th start in a major and 34th since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has two wins this season (WM Phoenix Open, The PLAYERS Championship) and leads the Tour with 15 “Top-10s” this season and has finished T12 or better in each of his last 18 starts. Scheffler has made two starts at The Open Championship (T8/2021, T21/2022).

PGA Tour: Barracuda Championship

July 19, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

TRUCKEE – There are just four events (three weeks) remaining in the FedEx Cup Regular Season. Starting this season, only the top 70 players at the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship will qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. As of July 19, there are 26 players in the field who have a chance to move into the Top 70 in the FedExCup standings with a win (all players currently at No. 129 or higher in the standings).

PGA Tour rookie Vincent Norrman defeated Nathan Kimsey in a playoff at last week’s Barbasol Championship to earn his first career Tour title. Norrman became the ninth first-time winner of the season (first since Wyndham Clark/Wells Fargo Championship) and second rookie to win on Tour this season, joining Nico Echavarria (Puerto Rico Open).

The last player to earn his first two PGA Tour titles in consecutive tournaments on the schedule was David Duval in 1997 (Michelob Championship at Kingsmill, Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic).

Kimsey’s runner-up came in his PGA Tour debut.

Since 2012, the Barracuda Championship has been played using Modified Stableford Scoring. The scoring system allocates points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole, with the goal of achieving the highest overall number of points. It is the “Elam Ending” of golf.

Modified Stableford Scoring:

Albatross +8

Eagle +5

Birdie +2

Par 0

Bogey -1

Double bogey or worse -3

Bello to Face A’s in Day Game

July 19, 2023 by Digital Sports Desk

OAKLAND – Boston right-hander Brayan Bello isn’t close to arbitration eligibility, yet his impressive pitching has the Red Sox already thinking about offering the second-year player a contract extension.

Embed from Getty Images

Bello is 7-5 with a 3.14 ERA this season, and he has been even more impressive lately, going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his past six starts. He is scheduled to pitch this afternoon in Oakland in the rubber game of a three-game set against the Athletics.

Opposing Bello will be Oakland left-hander Ken Waldichuk (2-6, 6.66 ERA).

With the exception of a three-batter hiccup by opener Joe Jacques on Tuesday, the Red Sox have pitched brilliantly in the first two games against the A’s, winning 7-0 on Monday before falling 3-0 in the rematch.

Bello is 2-0 in July, having beaten the visiting Texas Rangers before the All-Star break and then the host Chicago Cubs in his first start back.

The 24-year-old has been so impressive of late, Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero acknowledged this week that the club would consider locking up Bello for years to come.

“It’s all case by case. There’s no guidebook for it,” Romero said. “But I think Brayan is a special case, and we’ll make efforts to talk to him and his group. He’s basically done what he needs to do and what we would want of a young starting pitcher in this organization.

Nets, Cavs Will Always Have Paris

July 19, 2023 by Digital Sports Desk

NEW YORK – The Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers will play a regular season game in Paris next season. The game, which will be the NBA’s third regular season game in the French capital, will be played at Accor Arena on Jan. 11, 2024. The Nets previously have played in Paris, having done so in a preseason game in 2008.

“Our players and coaches will benefit greatly from the experience of immersing themselves in Paris’s rich culture off the court,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement.

The Cavaliers will be playing their third game overseas and first in Europe. They played in China in 2007 and Brazil during the preseason in 2015.

“We are honored as an organization to showcase the Cleveland Cavaliers in Paris,” said Koby Altman, Cavs president of basketball operations. “This opportunity will provide our players, coaches, staff and families an experience into a different culture, all while creating memories both on and off the court that will last a lifetime.

“We also recognize the universal appeal basketball inspires and we take great pride in our stewardship of the game,” he said.
