HOYLAKE – The Open Championship is the fourth and final major of the PGA Tour season. This is the 151st playing of The Open and the 13th at Royal Liverpool Golf Club (first since 2014).

World No. 2 and 24-time PGA Tour winner Rory McIlroy, who won last week’s Genesis Scottish Open, won The Open Championship the last time it was held at Royal Liverpool (2014). McIlroy has won four majors (2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, 2014 PGA Championship) but none since the start of the 2014-15 season. McIlroy has 19 “Top-10s” in majors since his most recent title, the most of any player in that span. He is making his 59th start in a major and 34th since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has two wins this season (WM Phoenix Open, The PLAYERS Championship) and leads the Tour with 15 “Top-10s” this season and has finished T12 or better in each of his last 18 starts. Scheffler has made two starts at The Open Championship (T8/2021, T21/2022).

TRUCKEE – There are just four events (three weeks) remaining in the FedEx Cup Regular Season. Starting this season, only the top 70 players at the conclusion of the Wyndham Championship will qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. As of July 19, there are 26 players in the field who have a chance to move into the Top 70 in the FedExCup standings with a win (all players currently at No. 129 or higher in the standings).

PGA Tour rookie Vincent Norrman defeated Nathan Kimsey in a playoff at last week’s Barbasol Championship to earn his first career Tour title. Norrman became the ninth first-time winner of the season (first since Wyndham Clark/Wells Fargo Championship) and second rookie to win on Tour this season, joining Nico Echavarria (Puerto Rico Open).

The last player to earn his first two PGA Tour titles in consecutive tournaments on the schedule was David Duval in 1997 (Michelob Championship at Kingsmill, Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic).

Kimsey’s runner-up came in his PGA Tour debut.

Since 2012, the Barracuda Championship has been played using Modified Stableford Scoring. The scoring system allocates points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole, with the goal of achieving the highest overall number of points. It is the “Elam Ending” of golf.

Bello to Face A’s in Day Game

OAKLAND – Boston right-hander Brayan Bello isn’t close to arbitration eligibility, yet his impressive pitching has the Red Sox already thinking about offering the second-year player a contract extension.

Bello is 7-5 with a 3.14 ERA this season, and he has been even more impressive lately, going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA in his past six starts. He is scheduled to pitch this afternoon in Oakland in the rubber game of a three-game set against the Athletics.

Opposing Bello will be Oakland left-hander Ken Waldichuk (2-6, 6.66 ERA).

With the exception of a three-batter hiccup by opener Joe Jacques on Tuesday, the Red Sox have pitched brilliantly in the first two games against the A’s, winning 7-0 on Monday before falling 3-0 in the rematch.

Bello is 2-0 in July, having beaten the visiting Texas Rangers before the All-Star break and then the host Chicago Cubs in his first start back.

The 24-year-old has been so impressive of late, Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero acknowledged this week that the club would consider locking up Bello for years to come.

“It’s all case by case. There’s no guidebook for it,” Romero said. “But I think Brayan is a special case, and we’ll make efforts to talk to him and his group. He’s basically done what he needs to do and what we would want of a young starting pitcher in this organization.

Nets, Cavs Will Always Have Paris

NEW YORK – The Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers will play a regular season game in Paris next season. The game, which will be the NBA’s third regular season game in the French capital, will be played at Accor Arena on Jan. 11, 2024. The Nets previously have played in Paris, having done so in a preseason game in 2008.

“Our players and coaches will benefit greatly from the experience of immersing themselves in Paris’s rich culture off the court,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement.

The Cavaliers will be playing their third game overseas and first in Europe. They played in China in 2007 and Brazil during the preseason in 2015.

“We are honored as an organization to showcase the Cleveland Cavaliers in Paris,” said Koby Altman, Cavs president of basketball operations. “This opportunity will provide our players, coaches, staff and families an experience into a different culture, all while creating memories both on and off the court that will last a lifetime.

“We also recognize the universal appeal basketball inspires and we take great pride in our stewardship of the game,” he said.

Bernardino, Pivetta, Martin Blank A’s

OAKLAND – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Nick Pivetta combined with opener Brennan Bernardino and closer Chris Martin on a one-hit shutout as the Boston Red Sox beat the host Oakland Athletics 7-0 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series.

Connor Wong collected two singles, a double and three RBIs for the Red Sox, who beat the A’s for the fourth time in 11 days.

With star third baseman Rafael Devers (calf) on the bench, Boston put up single runs in the first and second innings before Pivetta (6-5) took the mound.

Making his third start of the season, Bernardino allowed a single to Ryan Noda, the third batter he faced, but no other hits before handing a 2-0 lead to Pivetta after two innings.

Pivetta was even more dominant, holding the A’s hitless over six innings while matching his career high with 13 strikeouts. The right-hander walked two. Martin struck out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth, giving the Red Sox trio 18 strikeouts among 27 outs.

Justin Turner’s sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Wong produced the 2-0 lead before Boston broke the game open with a four-run sixth. Wong had a two-run double in the middle of the uprising, which also featured a sacrifice fly by Adam Duvall and an RBI groundout by Yu Chang.

A’s starter Paul Blackburn (1-2) was pulled two outs into the inning, charged with six runs on nine hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Boston tacked on a run in the ninth when Turner capped a two-RBI game with a run-scoring fielder’s choice.

Turner, Duvall, Alex Verdugo and Jarren Duran joined Wong with doubles for the Red Sox, who won for the 11th time in their past 13 games. The visitors had as many doubles (five) as singles (five) in their 10-hit attack.

Eight of the nine hitters in Boston’s lineup recorded at least one hit.

The shutout defeat was the 11th of the season for the A’s, who have lost eight in a row, matching their second-longest losing streak of the season. They had an 11-game skid in May.

Red Sox Expecting Return of Devers

OAKLAND – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The visiting Boston Red Sox hope to have Rafael Devers back in the lineup when they go for a second straight win over the reeling Oakland Athletics tonight.

With Devers being held out as a precaution due to a tight right calf, veteran Justin Turner slid over to third base and contributed a double, a run and two RBIs to a 7-0 triumph over the A’s in Monday’s series opener.

The double advanced Turner’s hitting streak to 13 games, during which he’s gone 20-for-49 (.408), raising his average from .271 to .290 in the process.

Should Devers return to action on Tuesday, Turner could move to second base — or first base or maybe even DH. The amazing part about his 13-game streak is that it’s come even as he has been shuffled among four different positions.

It also came immediately following a 4-for-28 (.143) stretch that saw his average drop 13 points.

When asked Monday to pinpoint what he’s done differently of late, Turner admitted: Nothing.

“There’s obviously a lot of variables and a lot of aspects to hitting,” he said. “Nowadays, with so many hitting coaches and swing coaches and swing gadgets, everyone’s so fast to overhaul or change things or use these gadgets because they think their swing isn’t working. The reality is: Your swing is fine but your timing is not.

“That is probably kind of a big issue in the game right now, (players) creating dependency on outside hitting people and all these drills and gimmicks to trick you into thinking you need all this stuff to be successful.”Turner was among eight Red Sox starters who had hits in the Monday win, Boston’s 11th victory in the past 13 games. At a position to be determined, he will take his cracks in the rematch against A’s right-hander Luis Medina (2-7, 6.34 ERA).

The 24-year-old rookie got a no-decision in Oakland’s 7-3 loss at Boston on July 7, allowing four runs in six innings while striking out a season-best nine. It was his first appearance against the Red Sox.

Medina won his previous start at home against the Chicago White Sox, a 7-4 victory in which he went five innings, allowing just one run.

The Red Sox used an opener approach in the Monday win, and it worked spectacularly. Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter in which the A’s got just five baserunners (a single, three walks and a hit batter) while striking out a total of 18 times.

Afterward, rather than blame fatigue following a hard-fought, three-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins that ended Sunday, A’s manager Mark Kotsay chose to praise Nick Pivetta, the second of Boston’s three pitchers on Monday. Pivetta pitched no-hit six innings and struck out 13.

“You run into a buzzsaw sometimes. This seemed to be one of those nights,” said Kotsay, whose team has lost eight in a row. “You just got to tip your cap sometimes.”

The Red Sox are expected to use a similar tactic on Tuesday, with left-hander Chris Murphy (0-0, 2.16 ERA) serving either as the opener or the bulk-innings reliever.

The 25-year-old California native worked the second through fourth innings in a July 9 home win over the A’s — the first time he’d ever faced them — allowing one run on two hits.

Scottish Open, Barbasol Wrap-Ups

NORTH BERWICK – Rory McIlroy won the Genesis Scottish Open by one stroke over Robert MacIntyre, earning his 24th PGA Tour title and second of the season. The victory comes in his 234th start at the age of 34 years, 2 months, 12 days.

McIlroy tied Dustin Johnson and Gary Player for 26th on the all-time PGA Tour wins list as McIlroy is the seventh player with multiple wins this season. The others: 4/Jon Rahm, 2/Keegan Bradley, 2/Wyndham Clark, 2/Tony Finau, 2/Max Homa, 2/Scottie Scheffler).

McIlroy moved to No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking and became the first player to win the Genesis Scottish Open (2023), Horizon Irish Open (2016) and The Open Championship (2014).

He improved to 11-for-19 to date converting a 54-hole lead/co-lead on Tour (1-for-3 this season) and became the 21st third round leader/co-leader to win on Tour this season.

Tom Kim (T-6) and Tommy Fleetwood (T-6) are the only two players to finish in the Top 10 in each of the last two years of the Genesis Scottish Open. Kim finished solo-third in 2022 and Fleetwood finished T-4.

HOYLAKE – So sorry, dear readers – I just couldn’t help myself. The promise for the WWYI column was great sports notes, some breaking news and analyzing the latest sports happenings with some true perspective. Fake news be damned.

Right after typing the fake dateline of HOYLAKE, a town on the outskirts of Liverpool, this column went right to the dark side of the Internet and called up CHAT GPT (Open AI). There’s a simple assignment to lead the column this week, so I asked Mr. Chat GPT if he/she/it could help the cause and generate a preview for this week’s Open, the major golf tournament played each year in the U.K..

Upon review, Mr Chat GPT Open AI must’ve been sipping from the Claret Jug all night, as it spit-out the following preview, complete with its own headline and the creation of sections to nicely break-up the copy. [Comments will be added by yours truly and in brackets].

It received the “Royal” designation in 1871 due to the patronage of Prince Arthur the Duke of Connaught, one of Queen Victoria’s younger sons.]

[The mistakes of the wrong YEAR and VENUE are about as serious as one could make, except for the old “Change all the Armys to Navy” line about the hungover scribe calling into his newspaper to check copy on the football game he’d just covered at the Air Force Academy. AI screwed up. Hugelywith a distance almost as far as you can get in England, some 300+ miles and a five hour, 46 minutes trip by car, or six hours by train, which would include some walking.]

[A very nice listing of contenders, except for the fact that Cameron Smithwon the 2022 Open at St. Andrews while Morikawa won the 2021 Open at St. Andrews.]

More trouble …

Dark Horses:

The Open Championship often produces surprise winners, and this year promises no less. Talented golfers like Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, and Matthew Wolff have been making waves in recent years and could emerge as dark horses in the tournament. Their young, fearless playing styles could prove to be an advantage on the demanding course.

[It’s great to embrace ambiguity unless it’s within a specific sports preview. A statement that The Open “often produced surprise winners” is far from the truth. You might think Francisco Molinari was a surprise winner in 2018, but he was among Europe’s best and was ranked No. 1 for Ryder Cup team qualification that year. You’d have to turn the clock back to 2003 – 20 years ago – to find a real surprise winner in Ben Curtis at the 132nd Open held at Royal St. George’s.]

Not to beat the dead horse, here, but …

Storylines to Watch:

As the tournament unfolds, several intriguing storylines will undoubtedly capture the attention of fans and media alike. The battle for the world number one No. 1 ranking between Dustin Johnson [Scottie Scheffler] and Jon Rahm could intensify, adding an extra layer of excitement to their head-to-head encounters. HERE COMES THE SUN (and the Mercury): The Phoenix Suns are moving forward with their free-to-air TV broadcast deal, which has been held up in a legal battle with Diamond Sports Holdings. Suns new team owner Mat Ishbia said in a statement that he was “excited to be able to deliver” the deal with Gray Television, which was previously paused after a bankruptcy judge said the Suns had to satisfy contractual obligations with Diamond Sports Net Arizona. … “I am proud that we are at the forefront of this shift to make the game more accessible, which not only serves our fan base, but also helps to build future NBA and WNBA fans,” Ishbia said in the statement. … Editorial comment: “If we all had a dime for every time a quote (any sport, any business, any descipline) started with a sentence with the word “excited” inlcuded. … The Suns and Mercury (planet closest to the Sun) are shopping their broadcast deals in unison. Sox, Cubs: Rubber Game at Wrigley

CHICAGO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Chicago Cubs host the Boston Red Sox on Sunday in the rubber match of both teams’ first series since the All-Star break.

Following an 8-3 loss on Friday in which five different Boston batters homered, Chicago evened the series on Saturday with a 10-4 romp.

Cody Bellinger hit a third-inning grand slam that gave the Cubs a 6-0 lead. The gap never dipped below five runs the rest of the way.

“He’s been more than expected since he’s been here,” Chicago manager David Ross said of Bellinger. “He’s the total package, right? The defense, the clubhouse presence, the at-bat. And the power is showing up.”

Bellinger homered twice in Friday’s loss and is hitting .476 (20-for-42) in the month of July.

Every Chicago batter connected for at least one hit in Saturday’s win. Five drove in runs, led by Bellinger, who had the four RBIs thanks to his eighth career grand slam. Patrick Wisdom drove in two with a fourth-inning home run, and Nico Hoerner, Christopher Morel and Miguel Amaya each had one RBI.

Cubs All-Star left-hander Justin Steele (9-2, 2.56 ERA) looks to pitch Chicago to the series win on Sunday. Steele has won in each of his last three starts in which he earned a decision, though his most recent outing — a six-inning appearance on July 5 at National League Central rival Milwaukee — was a no-decision.

Steele gave up three earned runs and nine hits in that contest, a 4-3 Cubs win. Both were the most Steele has allowed since giving up 10 hits and five earned runs on May 26 against Cincinnati.

The appearance against Cincinnati was Steele’s most recent loss. Sunday marks Steele’s first time facing the Red Sox.

Right-hander Kutter Crawford (3-4, 4.11) will take the mound for Boston for his first career appearance against the Cubs.

Crawford last pitched on July 6, giving up three runs and seven hits over four innings in a no-decision against Texas.

The right-hander has struck out 58 over 61 1/3 innings on the season and recorded two of his three wins in 2023 over his last four starts prior to the All-Star break.

Boston aims to bounce back from its first loss since July 4. The Red Sox had won six straight games prior to Saturday’s setback.

“People make a big deal out of one game,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “We’ll show up (Sunday) and play good baseball. We just didn’t make one play (Saturday), and that was it. We walked two, we hit one guy, we don’t make a play, they score six (runs).”

By scoring six runs in the third inning on Saturday, the Cubs matched the most runs scored by an opponent in a single game during Boston’s recent winning streak. The 10 total runs Chicago scored were just two fewer than Boston surrendered in its four previous games combined.

Though the Red Sox are five games above .500, Saturday’s loss dropped Boston to last place in the American League East.

Celtics Sign Jay Scrubb

BOSTON – (Staff Report from Official News Release) – The Boston Celtics signed reserve guard Jay Scrubb to a two-way contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Scrubb, 6-5/220, has appeared in 24 career NBA games (one start) with the Los Angeles Clippers (2020-22), and Orlando Magic (2022-23) and owns career averages of 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9.8 minutes per game.

The Louisville, Kentucky native appeared in two games for the Magic last season and averaged 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in 15.0 minutes per game. He also appeared in 28 games (25 starts) with the Lakeland Magic of the NBA G League, where he finished sixth in the league in total points scored (625) and ranked eighth in scoring with 22.3 points per game and averaged 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 31.0 minutes.

Scrubb was selected with the 55th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft and became the first Junior College player selected in the NBA Draft since 2004. Scrubb earned First-Team NJCAA All-American honors in each of his two years at John A. Logan College and was named the 2019-20 National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year. He started in 55 of his 59 games played, and averaged 21.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists from 2018-20.
