The Return of Maverick McNealy

November 2, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

CABO, MEXICO – PGA Tour star Maverick McNealy is a Stanford graduate, and the 27-year-old used his business hat rather than his heart in patiently waiting to make his return to the Tour this week.

McNealy is in this week’s field at the World Wide Technologies Championship in Mexico, his first start since missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open in June. No. 26 in the FedEx Cup standings at the time, McNealy decided it was time to address a shoulder injury that had been plaguing him for four months.

He considered returning at the Fortinet Championship in Napa, but wasn’t physically ready. McNealy really wanted to play the Shriners Children’s Open just 10 minutes from his home in Las Vegas, but that would have only provided him a minor medical extension to begin 2024.

Instead, McNealy circled this week’s event in Cabo San Lucas. Now 121st in the standings, McNealy is battling for status on tour next year, but he will now be playing on a major medical extension that provides more events to retain his status.

“I don’t know if my number’s good enough to hold up and I don’t want to leave it up to chance to maybe not be able to get all the events to start 2024,” he said Tuesday. “It was a hard business decision to not play Shriners, but I knew that World Wide Technology was going to be an event I could play.

“I’ll have probably around 11 events on this medical, so probably no more than 20 points needed over those 11 events. And I always play well in Mexico and I was really excited to get back out here. Feels like two events I can ease my way, get back in the routine, see where my body and my game are at and then hit the 2024 season running.”

McNealy’s 2023 season began to unravel with a “funny swing” following a long wait on the seventh tee at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. Ranked 60th in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time, McNealy would end up withdrawing from that event and the Waste Management Phoenix Open the following week.

He managed to make his next three cuts, but finished no better than a T36 at the Valspar. Six events and four missed cuts later while also sliding to 92nd in the OWGR, McNealy decided it was finally time to properly address the shoulder injury.

McNealy opted against surgery, choosing rather to focus on physical therapy along with a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. He also made some alterations to his swing mechanics to alleviate stress on the area, where he said he tore the ligament that connects his collarbone to his sternum.

Now in his sixth season as a professional golfer, McNealy also used the time away from the course to get his pilot’s license. He accomplished that goal, but also discovered that he truly missed life on the PGA Tour when it was taken away from him.

“I think being away from the tour has made me realize all the things I loved and missed about it,” he said. “It’s really easy to get caught up in the FedEx Cup rankings and try to make the playoffs, trying to hit a certain world ranking, working on your game, stressing about all these different things.

“At least for me, I kind of lost sight of the fact that it’s just really, really cool to be on the PGA Tour and be a PGA Tour player. This is the greatest job on the planet.”

McNealy said he has put flying on the backburner for now. It has been “all golf lately” as he has prepared for his return. It’s that daily grind in quest of being in contention come Sunday that McNealy found he also missed.

“Sitting out for four months made me realize I missed the travel. Not that I love sitting in airport terminals for a layover, but I love seeing different parts of the world, the country, eating different foods, meeting different people, hanging out with 50 of the best golfers on the plant and playing practice rounds and $5 birdie games with those guys, testing myself, pushing myself,” he said.

“I love being outside for six to eight hours a day. I love the fact that we get to walk 50 miles.”

There are plenty of major accomplishments for McNealy to pursue in his still-young PGA Tour career. He’s still chasing his first victory — and his first ticket to play in The Masters. McNealy’s has a pair of runner-up finishes on tour — both coming in 2021 — but he has only made one career cut in a major, finishing T75 at last year’s PGA Championship.

McNealy is returning to the tour in a dogfight to retain his status in marquee events, but with a newfound perspective.

“This is what people do for recreation and we get to do it for a job,” he said. “I’m really excited to hit golf shots that matter … like really matter and really count, and test myself and play that way. It just putts things in perspective for me.

“It’s so cliche, you don’t realize what you have until you don’t have it. You always think about it, your years on the PGA Tour are limited and how do I want to spend them. And I’m just going to love being here.”

PGA: Morikawa Ends Two-Year Drought

October 22, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

CHIBA – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Collin Morikawa entered Sunday’s final round at the Zozo Championship in Japan, two shots behind leader Justin Suh. When it was all over, Morikawa turned the deficit into a six-stroke victory, shooting a 63 at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club to win his first title since 2021.

“Would have had to play, as it turns out, really well today to win,” said Beau Hossler, whose 70 was good enough for a tie with Eric Cole for second place at 8-under 272 for the tournament. “And that’s what champions do, right? Collin’s a proven champion on the biggest stages, so kudos to him.”

Morikawa’s Sunday round started with four birdies on the front nine. Suh, playing in the group behind Morikawa, countered with three bogeys, and by the time he made the turn, Morikawa had vaulted into the lead.

Morikawa’s bogey-free 63 was the lowest final-round score to win the Zozo in tournament history. His 14-under finish and six-stroke win was the biggest margin of victory in tournament history, besting Hideki Matsuyama’s five-stroke win in 2021.

“The game felt really good,” Morikawa said. “… Everything just kind of clicked, and we were able to not make any errors really, make the par putts when needed, and it was nice to finish off that front nine with a birdie on 8 and 9.”

Morikawa’s last PGA Tour win came at The Open Championship in 2021. Sunday’s win was his first overall since the 2021 DP World Tour Championship.

“It feels incredible,” he said of his sixth PGA Tour title. “Every win’s so different, and every experience, whether it’s winning or losing, you learn a lot, but this one just meant the world.”

Cole and Hossler entered the round tied for second at 8-under and both shot par 70 on Sunday to finish in the same spot. .

Robby Shelton fired his second 65 of the tournament — he also opened with a 65 — to move into a fourth-place tie with Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa (67). Americans took four of the first five places.

Another American, Suh, held his first-ever 54-hole lead but struggled throughout the round on Sunday with six bogeys and only two birdies. His 74 left him at 5-under for the tournament and in a tie for 10th.

Morikawa pocketed $1.53 million on Sunday. Perhaps more importantly, he walked away with both a sense of satisfaction and relief after the two-year winless drought.

“It feels so good, I can’t even explain it,” Morikawa said of his sixth PGA Tour win. “I knew I was going to get here at some point. It’s like getting your first win, your first major.”

PGA Tour: Three Share Lead at Shriners

October 15, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

SUMMERLIN – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Tom Kim of South Korea and Adam Hadwin of Canada posted monster rounds Saturday to vault into a three-way tie with Lanto Griffin atop the leaderboard of the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas.

Embed from Getty Images

Kim fired a 9-under-par 62, one better than Hadwin’s 63 to sit at 15 under after 54 holes. Kim jumped 25 spots up the leaderboard on moving day while Hadwin improved 19 spots. Griffin, the co-leader after two rounds, shot 68.

Three players are one shot back in a tie for fourth and another four golfers sit T7 just two shots off the lead, including Switzerland’s Callum Tarren, who matched Kim’s 62 for low round of the day. Tarren vaulted 41 spots up the leaderboard and into contention.

Another seven players are just three back T11.

Adding to Kim’s phenomenal round is that he carded two bogeys — and an eagle — to go with nine birdies.

Hadwin, meanwhile, turned in a clean card with his eight birdies.

Second-round co-leader Cameron Champ shot 74, falling into a T24 at 9 under.

2023 Ryder Cup | Preview and Schedule

BOSTON – Gone are Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood – the elder statesmen of European golf and mainstays of victory for past Team Europe wins on their home soil. In their place, the likes of Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg.

Gone are LIV golfers (other than Brooks Koepka). Whether they are Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson or Bryson DeChambeau of the USA or Ian Poulter, GraemeMcDowell, Martin Kaymer or Henrik Stenson, in addition to Garcia and Westwood – the formation of the Saudi-based LIV Tour has changed the face of the 2023 Ryder Cup more than anything in the history of the competition, dating back to 1927 when it was played right down the Mass Pike from here in Boston in Worcester, Mass.

In place are two talented rosters of Team USA and host Team Europe players, anchored by FedEx Cup champion Viktor Hovland of Norway, Rory McIlroy of N. Ireland and Jon Rahm of Spain for the Europeans and Scottie Scheffler, PatrickCantlay and the formidable team of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas of the United States.

Odds-makers have the USA slightly favored even though Team USA hasn’t won on Euro-soil since 1993 – before most of the current US team members were born.

FORMAT: Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.

FOUR-BALL: In four-ball, each member of a two-man team plays his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved.

FOURSOMES: In foursomes, each two-man team plays one ball per hole with the players taking turns until each hole is complete. Players alternate hitting tee shots, with one leading off on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting first on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.

SINGLES: In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.

SCORING: Each match is worth one point, with matches ending in a tie worth ½ point to each side. The first team to reach 14 ½ points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 tie, the team holding the Ryder Cup (USA) retains it.

For example, if Homa (No. 6) finishes in second place, the third-place finisher will receive third-place points rather than moving into second place. … Ryan Gerard and Peter Kuest, who have earned Special Temporary Membership, are in this week’s field. So, too, is Aaron Baddeley, who will make his 500th career start on tour. … 2023 NCAA Division I National Championship winner Fred Biondi will make his professional debut. … Hayden Springer earned a sponsor exemption by finishing first in the Fortinet Cup standings on PGA Tour Canada.

Zach Johnson Prep for Ryder Cup

September 12, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

ROME – (Staff and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson and vice captain Stewart Cink have their team of 12, and now the time for scouting the course and penciling mock pairings has arrived.

There’s chemistry between teammates to consider, such as Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele’s dominance together as match-play partners. But what stands out to Johnson and Cink about this Ryder Cup in particular is the demanding nature of Marco Simone Golf Course.

Embed from Getty Images

“It’s probably the most — the most demanding, physically, of any Cup course I’ve ever seen that I’ve been a part of,” Cink said Tuesday ahead of the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship.

“No question,” Johnson said. “In my time, for sure.”

Johnson headed to Rome earlier this month with nine of the team’s 12 players to scout Marco Simone. Only Jordan Spieth, Cantlay and Schauffele could not make the trip.

“We’re starting to get into some possible pairings to see what’s best for that golf course and what’s best for our team,” Johnson said.

“I think the golf course is going to solve some of that problem because it’s so hilly and the temperature could be pretty hot, too, that I think guys are going to be happy to probably rest,” Cink chimed in. “There’s not going to be a lot of disappointment for not playing.”

Johnson agreed, noting it was “a brutal walk.”

The host team gets to set up the course to its liking, and the United States has not fared well overseas, last winning a Ryder Cup in Europe in 1993.

Johnson and Cink will spend some time at the Fortinet Championship with two of their team members, Max Homa and Justin Thomas. Homa is the event’s defending champion, while Thomas is competing for points in the first-ever FedEx Cup Fall series.

When making their lineup decision, the captain and vice captain aren’t going to weight Homa’s and Thomas’ week in Napa, Calif., too heavily.

“Four days of stroke play is vastly different than five sessions of match play in three days,” Johnson said.

Cink already figures that whatever Homa and Thomas accomplish this week “will be overstated to the good or to the bad.”

“I hope they both win. I don’t think that’s possible, but I hope they both win,” Cink said. “That would be great for their confidence alone … I just think for us internally, it would probably be — we hope that they have confidence coming out of this week and that would be a great thing.”

Hovland Takes the ’23 FedEx Cup

August 27, 2023 by Terry Lyons

ATLANTA – Viktor Hovland of Norway earned his sixth PGA TOUR victory in his 98th start at the age of 25 years, 11 months, 9 days and became only the fourth player in history to win the BMW Championship and FedExCup in the same season, joining Tiger Woods (2007, 2009), Billy Horschel (2014) and Patrick Cantlay (2021). He became the eighth player to win consecutive FedEx Cup Playoffs events.

For his efforts the past two weeks and for the regular season work before, Hovland pocketed $18,000,000 and won the FedEx Cup.

With apologies to Lionel Messi of Argentina, it is safe to say the best 1500 and 5000m runner (Jakob Ingebrigtsen), the best futbol player (Erling Haaland) and the best pro golfer (Viktor Hovland) all hail from Norway.

Hovland’s 68-64-66-63 (-19) – and (-8 start) = (-27) five stroke victory over Xander Schauffele (-22) marked the largest margin of victory in the FedEx Cup starting strokes era. The difference was the FedEx Cup starting strokes – (-8) to (-3).

In his first TOUR Championship start, Wyndham Clark finished solo-third, the best performance among the five first-time participants in the field and the best finish of a player making their TOUR Championship debut since Schauffele won in 2017.

With a fourth-place finish, three-time FedEx Cup Champion Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) earned his 10th consecutive Top 10 finish on TOUR, the longest streak of his career.

While We’re Young (Ideas) | A Look at the NE Patriots’ Tough Road

By TERRY LYONS

FOXBORO – After missing a few concert dates in Philadelphia, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band came back as strong as ever on Thursday night and they’ll be icing the guitar strings by the time you read this (on Saturday night or Sunday morning) after their second of two shows in New England.

The rock show stage and equipment trucks will head to Met Life Stadium on Sunday but the real question is whether the New England Patriots can bounce back as quickly as Springsteen did.

In two of three preseason games, the Patriots couldn’t break 10 points, the last coming Friday night, a 23-7 loss at Tennessee (hardly the strength of the AFC). New England previously fell, 20-7, to Houston and – in between – they managed a 21-17 victory at Green Bay, hardly the Pack of old. Only the Houston Texans game was at Gillette Stadium.

The old adage is to never put much stock in NFL preseason games, as second stringers battle for roster positions and veterans sit-out for health reasons and load management, but the main issue facing the Patriots as summer preseason games fade to opening day is a dose of reality – a reality speech you won;t hear on Boston sports talk radio or on WBZ-TV.

The fact of the matter is New England has a very tough schedule over the first eight weeks of the NFL regular season.

The Patriots open with two home games, against Philadelphia and Miami. A split would be an admirable outcome. From there, it gets dicey, especially with the fact four of the next six games are on the road. Here’s a quick look at the opening eight:

  • Sept. 10 – vs Philadelphia
  • Sept. 17 – vs. Miami
  • Sept. 24 – at NY Jets
  • Oct. 1 – at Dallas
  • Oct. 8 – vs New Orleans
  • Oct. 15 – at Las Vegas
  • Oct. 22 – vs Buffalo
  • Oct. 29 – at Miami

It’s entirely within reason that the New England Patriots start the year (1-7) or, ahem, (0-8) and with their highest hopes of being – (4-4) after eight weeks.

At the tail-end of the regular season, it doesn’t look any better, as the Patriots will face the two toughest teams in the AFC and two teams on the rise. Their “final four” schedule is as follows:

  • Dec. 18 – vs Kansas City
  • Dec. 24 – at Denver
  • Dec. 31 – at Buffalo
  • Jan. 7 – vs NY Jets

Two of the huge unknowns of this NFL season are within the AFC East.

  1. Will QB Aaron Rodgers and an improved NYJ offense warrant a playoff spot?
  2. Will the Miami Dolphins continue to improve and can oft-injured QB Tua Tagovailoa stay healthy, take the next step and compete with Buffalo and New York for the AFC East Divsional title?

The prediction here is for Buffalo to dominate the division but for the NY Jets to step-up to No. 2 and a playoff berth. The Dolphins and Patriots are likely to be (8-8, at best) and receive the home version of the game by New Year’s Eve.

Rodgers’ impact – as seen in this year’s HARD KNOCKS – is clearly evident. His throws remain effortless and his tutelage to young NYJ QB Zach Wilson might put the J-E-T-S’ quarterback situation amongst the NFL elite for a decade to come. Meanwhile, New England’s QB Mac Jones will face increasing pressure – both on and off the field – as the New England faithful long for the halcyon days of Tom Brady. Even the wizardry of Patriots coach Bill Belichick can’t team poise and performance under pressure. He’ll have to rely on defensive techniques and let the man who wears the “Mac” in the pouring rain, be very strained.

HERE NOW, THE NOTES: The ink is barely dry on the final boxscore as the United States’ men’s senior national basketball team opened the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup with a 99-72 win over New Zealand on Saturday at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The USA is in Group C, and will face Greece on Monday (8:40am ET) and Jordan (the country, not the guy) on Wednesday (4:40am ET). Both games can be seen on ESPN2 or ESPN+ (streaming). The U.S.A. is seeking its sixth FIBA Men’s World Cup gold medal, winning in 2010 and 2014 but losing-out to Spain for the gold in 2006 and 2019. … In Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s first go-round with the NBA-level players back in the ‘06 Worlds in Japan, the USA was upset in the semifinals by Greece. In 2019, the US lost to both France and Serbia to finish in 7th Place under newly inducted Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich. … Golden State’s Steve Kerr is in the drivers’ seat this summer and he has a stacked coaching staff and a talented roster of young players. Only the lack of high-level international experience can come between the USA and gold, or maybe an equally stacked Team Canada who ran the French team off the court Friday (Sat in Asia) with a 95-65 thrashing. Might they be singing “Oh Canada” when the FIBA Cup finals roll around on September 10th?

TID-BITS: Doesn’t the career arc of Phil Mickelson reflect the career arc of Rudy Giuliani (minus the recent State of Georgia indictment)? … A bad night on Chicago’s South Side has given a whole new meaning to the phrase “Bloody Sox.” Police in Chicago are investigating a shooting that left two women with non-life-threatening injuries Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field as the White Sox lost to the Oakland Athletics. In a statement issued early Saturday, the White Sox confirmed the incident and said it was unclear whether the women, who were in outfield seats in left field, were struck by bullets that came from inside or outside the park. Chicago police said one woman, 42, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, listed in fair condition. The other woman, 26, was grazed by a bullet to the abdomen but declined medical attention. In its statement, the team implied the incident was unprovoked. “While the police continue to investigate, White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind,” the team said. “The White Sox are thinking of the victims at this time and wishing them a speedy recovery.”

BC OPENER: The Notre Dame v Navy (in Ireland) score will be in the books by the time you read this, but the bulk of College Football games will be played next weekend with games beginning Thursday night. On Saturday, September 2, the Boston College Eagles will open their 2023 season at home against an always tough Northern Illinois Huskies squad. BC opens with three home games, the third against potential ACC champion Florida State. That said, the September 16 (Noon) game on ABC will be the annual “Red Bandana” game. Look out Seminoles!

PGA TOUR Championship: Tune-in (CBS) Sunday for the grand-finale of the 2023 PGA Tour season when the TOUR Championship determines the winner of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and an $18 million haul. … The golfers will continue playing in a Fall schedule of PGA Tour events, and they’ll begin to accumulate FedEx Cup points towards the 2024 title. … The next, call it REAL serious pro golf tournament, will take place in Rome, Italy when the Ryder Cup is up for grabs (Sept. 29-Oct.1).

WHEN YOU THINK OF IT: The next few weeks will include some of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. Here’s a quick list – top of mind:

  • FIBA World Cup of Basketball
  • TOUR Championship/FedEx Cup Playoffs Finale
  • Opening of NCAA College Football
  • Opening of NFL regular season
  • US Open Tennis
  • Rugby World Cup
  • Conclusion of 2023 MLB Season

PGA Tour: FedEx Cup Finale

August 27, 2023 by PGA Tour Brunch

ATLANTA – Viktor Hovland recorded a third-round (66) in his fourth consecutive start at the TOUR Championship. Hovland has qualified every year since joining the TOUR in 2020 and now holds a six stroke lead to tie the largest 54-hole lead in the FedExCup starting strokes era. The previous best: Scottie Scheffler/2022/Finished T-2).

Hovland moved to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings after winning last week’s BMW Championship, his fifth career TOUR victory. He can become the fourth player in history to win the BMW Championship and FedExCup in the same season, joining Tiger Woods (2007, 2009), Billy Horschel (2014) and Patrick Cantlay (2021).

Making his seventh consecutive start at the TOUR Championship, Xander Schauffele (2nd/-14) posted a (68) for his 24th under-par score in 27 career rounds at East Lake Golf Club. He has finished inside the Top 10 in all six TOUR Championship appearances, including his victory in 2017.

The 36-hole co-leader – Collin Morikawa (T3/-13) – struggled to a (73) after sitting bogey free through 36 holes; career-best finish in the FedEx Cup: 6th/2020

In his first TOUR Championship appearance since 2018, Keegan Bradley (T3/-13) posted even par with birdies on two of his final four holes.
