Pastrnak Comes Through for Bruins

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Boston’s David Pastrnak scored 1:54 into overtime as the Bruins beat the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 on Saturday night in Game 7 of an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Pastrnak raced up the right wing and scored off the carom of defenseman Hampus Lindholm’s lob off the corner boards, tucking a backhander between the left post and the skate of Toronto goaltender Ilya Samsonov (29 saves).

Lindholm finished with a goal and an assist, tallying Boston’s only marker in regulation just 1:21 after Toronto’s William Nylander opened the scoring at 9:01 of the third period.

Jeremy Swayman made 30 saves for Boston, which has now won seven consecutive playoff series against Toronto dating back to 1969 and will meet the Florida Panthers in the second round.

Game 1 of the Bruins’ next series is set for Monday night in Sunrise, Fla.

Samsonov got the start since Joseph Woll did not dress due to an undisclosed injury sustained in Game 6. Nearly midway through the third, Toronto scored the go-ahead goal off an in-zone sequence. After Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo slipped and lost the puck in the corner, Auston Matthews — who returned from a two-game absence (illness) — picked it up and dished it to an open Nylander for him to deposit into the back of the net.

The hosts wasted little time responding. Justin Brazeau’s backhand from the bottom of the right circle deflected over the net, but Lindholm got the puck on the opposite wing and flicked it in off the right post.

Boston combined for just three first-period shots in Games 5 and 6, but it got off to a much better start on Saturday, outshooting the Maple Leafs 11-9 through the first 20 minutes of action.

However, Toronto picked up the pace in the second, recording 12 shots to the Bruins’ seven.

Following a scoreless Boston power play, Toronto’s first and only man advantage — stemming from a Charlie Coyle cross-check at 4:36 of the second — resulted in strong pressure. The Bruins completed the kill, with Tyler Bertuzzi putting a shot on goal just as the power play was coming to an end.

Another key Swayman save came on Connor Dewar’s short-handed breakaway with 8:35 left in the period.

NHL Bruins: “Not Again”

TORONTO – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Toronto’s William Nylander scored in the second and third periods as the Maple Leafs earned a 2-1 win over the visiting Boston Bruins on Thursday to even their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series at three victories apiece. Game 7 is set for Saturday night in Boston.

Nylander broke the game’s long scoreless deadlock with 54.8 seconds left in the second before doubling Toronto’s lead on a breakaway with 2:13 to go in regulation. Morgan Rielly assisted on both goals.

Before netting his first goal, Nylander had been on a 13-game scoring drought dating back to the regular season.

Joseph Woll stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced in his second straight start for the Maple Leafs, coming within 0.1 seconds of a shutout. He recorded 12 saves in the second period alone.

Morgan Geekie scored just before the final buzzer and Jeremy Swayman made 24 saves for the Bruins, who will play a first-round Game 7 after surrendering a 3-1 series lead for the second straight season.

Last year, the Bruins, who posted the NHL’s best record in the regular season, were ousted by the Florida Panthers in the opening round of the postseason.

Toronto played a tight game in the first period of a second straight game, holding a 12-1 shot advantage. Boston’s lone shot came on a Jake DeBrusk short-handed try at the 11:38 mark.

The Bruins’ penalty kill remained strong in the early going, especially when it was tasked with combating David Pastrnak’s double-minor penalty for high-sticking just 1:10 into the second. The hosts managed only two shots during the four-minute sequence.

Nylander’s go-ahead goal gave Toronto its first second-intermission lead of the series.

After Nylander was not called for a hit from behind on Boston defenseman Mason Lohrei that was followed by an immediate icing, Nylander curled at the right point, moved back into the circle and fired a wrist shot that deflected off a body in front and past a screened Swayman.

With a 1-0 lead, Woll thwarted one of Boston’s most dangerous stretches just before the 7:00 mark of the third. After Brad Marchand could not handle Geekie’s pass through to the crease, the Toronto netminder withstood a flurry and covered up two Charlie Coyle chances from tight range.

Just over a minute after Swayman stopped a Max Domi breakaway, a chip-out and Matthew Knies feed led to Nylander jumping ahead for a backhand finish that doubled the Toronto lead with 2:13 left in regulation.

Geekie knocked home the Bruins’ goal in the crease in the final tenth of a second.

DeBrusk Opening For Bruins

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Boston’s Jake DeBrusk logged a three-point game to lead the Bruins to a 5-1 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series on Saturday. DeBrusk factored into all three of Boston’s second-period goals, scoring twice in 2:32 after assisting Brandon Carlo.

John Beecher, who was making his playoff debut, and Trent Frederic also scored, while Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy each had two assists for Boston, which won all four head-to-head meetings between the teams in the regular season.

Bruins’ goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman finished with 35 saves, stopping all 24 shots he faced over the first two periods.

David Kampf scored the lone goal and Ilya Samsonov made 19 saves on 23 shots for Toronto.

Toronto had a 36-24 shot advantage but went scoreless in three power plays while Boston went 2-for-5.

Shortly after Swayman made his second of two key early stops on a Nicholas Robertson point-blank rebound, Beecher buried Jesper Boqvist’s two-on-one pass to the left circle at 2:26 of the first period.

Boston could have extended its lead if Charlie McAvoy and Pavel Zacha hadn’t hit posts within a 2:05 span in the first period.

The Bruins began their second-period scoring onslaught at 5:47 as Carlo buried a drive from the top of the right circle off DeBrusk’s feed.

DeBrusk scored on the last two of Boston’s three power plays in the middle frame to increase the lead to 4-0, including a snapshot from the right circle at 15:02.

The third goal on Boston’s nine second-period shots occurred when DeBrusk redirected Brad Marchand’s centering pass off Samsonov and over the goal line.
The Maple Leafs broke the shutout quickly in the third. At 1:39, Kampf glided down the slot and buried Connor Dewar’s slick backhand feed.

Frederic’s empty-net goal with 2:08 left sealed the win.

Toronto forward William Nylander (undisclosed) was out of the lineup.

Bruins Face Penguins in Key Game

PITTSBURGH – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Pittsburgh Penguins are on some kind of roll yet are guaranteed nothing as they get ready to host one of the top teams in the NHL today, the Boston Bruins.

Seemingly out of the hunt for a playoff spot late last month, the Penguins (37-30-12) have stacked together a 10-game points streak (7-0-3). Thursday, they beat Detroit 6-5 in overtime to move into the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

That means if they win their final three games, they are guaranteed a spot in the postseason.

Not that that will be easy for Pittsburgh, just as this stretch hasn’t been easy. Many of the bugaboos that have plagued them all season — blowing leads is at the top of the list — are still there. The Penguins have just been able to overcome them lately.

“For some reason, we like to challenge ourselves a little bit more than maybe we should,” said Pittsburgh goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, who has stolen the net from prescribed No. 1 Tristan Jarry and has started every game during the 10-game point streak.

In the critical game against the Red Wings — the teams were tied in points going into the game — the Penguins blew a two-goal, third-period lead before Erik Karlsson’s overtime winner.

Assisting on Karlsson’s goal was team captain Sidney Crosby, who has been the catalyst for Pittsburgh’s surge.

He has eight goals, 20 points in the 10 games. Thursday, his goal and two assists lifted him into 10th place all-time in the NHL with 1,591 points and gave him 1,000 career assists.

“He’s a special player; he’s an even more special person,” Crosby’s linemate, Bryan Rust, said. “He’s just leading this team right now. We’re just all getting in line behind him and doing everything we can.”

Boston (46-18-15) long ago established itself as a top team and Stanley Cup contender this season, but there is still work to be done over the final three games.

The Bruins have not locked up the Atlantic Division title, and still have a shot at the Eastern Conference championship and even the Presidents’ Trophy.

That’s a lot of home-ice advantage on the line in addition to bragging rights.

Boston also wants to fine-tune its game heading into the playoffs. The team has been off since Tuesday when its four-game winning streak was snapped in a 4-1 loss to Carolina.

“I feel good” about the team, defenseman Charlie McAvoy said. “(Tuesday) was just one game.

“I think we’ve displayed how we can play. … I think we’ve been working toward our game.”

The Bruins also could settle on a go-to goalie, Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman, for the playoffs, or could continue with a rotation of the two.

“Why are we talking about two weeks from now?” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery asked coyly.

In the game in Pittsburgh, there seems to be a good chance that veteran forward Pat Maroon will make his Bruins debut. He was acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline but has been recovering from back surgery.

Montgomery put the odds of Maroon playing at 75 percent.

Maroon could replace James van Riemsdyk, who has just one point in the past 19 games.

Bruins Clinch Stanley Cup Playoffs Berth

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Boston Bruins clinched an eighth consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs while sitting idle on Thursday. When the Bruins (42-17-15, 99 points) return to the ice for a Saturday road game against the Washington Capitals, it will be all about getting back to business and continuing to build toward their top game.

The results were split during the Florida portion of an ongoing six-game road trip. Boston, which has lost three of four, beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Tuesday but lost 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

“(Tuesday) night, there was a lot of emotion in that game. There was a lot of physical — the physical product also contributes,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “You win a big game like that, we’re sky high, and then we gotta come back and we gotta play an elite team in the league again. It’s a hard schedule.”

The Bruins have been off since, but the challenge remains against the Capitals (36-27-9, 81 points), who hold the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Boston’s power play has been one recent Achilles’ heel, clicking at just 1-for-11 over its last four games. Trent Frederic scored the only goal during that stretch, tying the score against Florida.

“It’s hard when your (power play) doesn’t go your way, so you start to lose confidence pretty quickly,” Bruins forward and leading scorer David Pastrnak said. “We’ve got eight games left and we need to make sure we get the (power play) back to where it used to be. We are a good power-play unit, so time is running out and we have to be better.”

Danton Heinen scored the Bruins’ lone goal against Tampa Bay.

Washington, meanwhile, had a three-game win streak snapped in a 5-1 road loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. The Capitals were outshot 48-24 and got a lone goal from Nic Dowd.

With playoff time approaching, Washington coach Spencer Carbery was a bit concerned after his team’s loss against a high-octane offensive team — similar to the Bruins.

“From the start of the game, you could feel that our group was overwhelmed early on, just with the speed, the way things were happening,” Carbery said. “You could see a bunch of puck touches where we bobble it. We were fighting it early, and it was just too quick for us.”

Despite being positioned for the final playoff spot in the East, the Capitals have a minus-30 goal differential this season and will need to stick to their identity to have an extended stay come late April and beyond.

“We’re not a team that can play without guys getting the puck and moving their feet,” Washington forward T.J. Oshie said. “We’re not a team that can have success if we’re not keeping things simple and moving the puck quickly. And we’re certainly not a team that can turn pucks over in the neutral zone.”

Washington won 3-0 on the road against Boston on Feb. 10 in the only prior meeting between the teams this season. The win ended the Capitals’ six-game skid at the time. Charlie Lindgren needed to make only 18 saves.

Sports Biz: Caps, Wizards to Stay in DC

WASH DC – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – After exploring the possibility of relocation to Virginia, the Wizards and Capitals will be staying in Washington until 2050.

Washington mayor Muriel E. Bowser and Ted Leonsis, who owns both franchises, signed a deal on Wednesday that would keep the Wizards and Capitals in town as long as the D.C. Council approves it.

Per the deal, the city will put $515 million into Capital One Arena — the home of both the Wizards and Capitals — over the next three years. Because of those renovations, Leonsis will sign a new lease that runs from 2025-50.

“We are the current home and the future home of the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards,” Bowser said. “As Ted likes to say, we’re going to be together for a long time.”

Leonsis’ company, Monumental Sports & Entertainment, will also have the ability to expand throughout the city under the new deal.

Just three months ago, Leonsis had a handshake agreement with Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) in place for the construction of a new arena in Alexandria, Va. It would have been built in the Potomac Yard neighborhood of town as part of a $2.2 billion mixed-use development.

But Bowser and the DC Council then made moves that caught Leonsis’ eye, including the passage of a new crime bill and a plan to make downtown more vibrant, causing the owner to switch gears.

“It’s a great day, and I’m really relieved,” Leonsis said Wednesday. “This was not only the right thing for the community, the right thing for the city, the right thing for us, it’s a really smart business deal.”

Bruins Rally Past Florida, 4-3

SUNRISE – Pavel Zacha’s go-ahead goal with 2:21 left in the third period helped the Boston Bruins rally past the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Tuesday night in Florida. Zacha’s goal went in off his right skate as teammate David Pastrnak fired the puck toward the net. Florida led 3-2 until Trent Frederic tied the game at 15:38 of the third period with the Bruins on a power play.

Charlie McAvoy, Zacha and Pastrnak each had a goal and an assist for Boston. Pastrnak’s goal was his 45th of the season as he reached the 100-point mark for the second season in a row. His assist on the game-winner gave him 101 points.

Jeremy Swayman recorded the win, making 18 saves. He also earned his first assist of the season on Frederic’s goal.

Boston (42-16-15, 99 points) moved past Florida (46-21-5, 97 points) for first place in the Atlantic Division.

The Bruins, who are 3-0-0 against the Panthers this season, snapped a two-game losing streak.

Florida’s Carter Verhaeghe scored at 9:53 of the third, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead. Of Verhaeghe’s 33 goals this season, 19 have come in the third period.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 17 shots in a losing effort.

Evan Rodrigues and Sam Reinhart also scored for the Panthers. Reinhart’s goal was his 51st of the season. Reinhart and Pastrnak are two of the top five goal-scorers in the NHL this season.

The Panthers got two key players back in the lineup, center Aleksander Barkov and defenseman Gustav Forsling, but it wasn’t enough.

Still, Florida needed just 27 seconds to open the scoring. Barkov earned the primary assist on his bad-angle shot that looked as if it were going in anyway before it was tapped home by Rodrigues.

Boston tied the score at 17:43 of the first as McAvoy ended a 15-game goal drought with his blast from the right circle. With most of Florida’s defenders scrapping for the puck on the left side, Matt Grzelcyk passed to McAvoy on the right to set up the goal.

Florida took a 2-1 lead at 18:56 of the first as Reinhart tapped in the puck. Eetu Luostarinen earned the primary assist.

Boston tied the score 2-2 at 15:59 of the second as McAvoy’s centering pass found Pastrnak alone in front of the net. Pastrnak did the rest, lifting the puck over a sprawled Bobrovsky.

Verhaeghe’s goal gave Florida a 3-2 lead as his shot from the left circle went between the legs of Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.

However, Boston’s two goals in the final five minutes were too much for Florida to overcome.

DeBrusk Beats Habs in OT

MONTREAL – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Jake DeBrusk scored the game-winning goal 25 seconds into overtime as the Boston Bruins beat the host Canadiens 2-1 on Thursday night.

DeBrusk drove to the net and slipped home a backhand shot after taking a pass from Boston captain Brad Marchand on a two-on-one rush.

Danton Heinen scored his fourth goal against Montreal this season, helping Boston go 3-0-1 against the Canadiens.

Linus Ullmark made 18 saves as the Bruins logged their third victory in four games.

Boston had a 24-19 advantage in shots on goal, scoring on the only shot of overtime.

Nick Suzuki scored Montreal’s lone goal, and Sam Montembeault stopped 22 shots.

The Canadiens have lost three of four (1-2-1).

Boston (24) and Montreal (21) have played the first and third-most overtime games, respectively, in the NHL this season.

The Bruins went 0-for-4 on the power play. The Canadiens were 0-for-3.

The Bruins scored first 4:49 into the first period when Heinen slotted home his own rebound while falling to the ice low in the left circle. Montembeault made saves on David Pastrnak’s drive from the opposite side and then initially on Heinen before the goal.

Three Boston hit the post in the first period to keep the Bruins from furthering their lead, including a Charlie Coyle backhander at the 8:03 mark early on the opening power play.

Suzuki’s goal at 14:37 made it a 1-1 game entering the first intermission. Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo turned the puck over to Suzuki in the left circle, where an initial shot was blocked to Juraj Slafkovsky and passed back through traffic for an open shot.

The teams combined for just 11 shots in a scoreless second period, with Montembeault nearly getting a piece of Pastrnak’s shot on the breakaway that hit the outside of the post.

Montreal killed Suzuki’s four-minute penalty for a high stick to the face of Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy in the last eight minutes of regulation, despite Boston rookie Justin Brazeau’s hard work at the net front looking for a go-ahead goal.

Bruins Ready for Visiting Oilers

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Coach Jim Montgomery knew exactly what he was looking for out of his Boston Bruins team.

“We’ve been talking about getting our game going — and raising our level to get ready for the playoffs,” Montgomery said of the aftermath of a 5-1 road loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday.

Mission accomplished.

Just a night after a complete team effort produced a 4-1 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Bruins will look to continue down the right track on Tuesday when they entertain another high-skill team in the visiting Edmonton Oilers.

Not only did Pavel Zacha post his first multi-goal game of the season and Morgan Geekie score his fourth goal in three games, but Jeremy Swayman’s 32-save effort backstopped a gem of a game that had often been missing of late.

“The whole game (was strong). We finally put up a good 60 minutes,” Bruins forward David Pastrnak said. “It’s a huge step forward, and a big win for our team.”

Pastrnak dished out three assists against Toronto, giving him eight points in his last four games and 90 for the season. The top-scoring winger is the eighth player in Bruins franchise history to reach that mark in consecutive seasons.

Prior to Monday, Boston had allowed three or more goals in 10 of its previous 11 games dating back to a 4-0 shutout of the Vancouver Canucks on Feb. 8. That game was also the last in which Boston had more than a two-goal lead through two periods.

The Bruins, who are just 5-4-5 since the All-Star break, will look to carry Monday’s momentum into a stretch that includes seven out of eight games on home ice.

A chance at sweeping the four-game season series from Toronto comes on Thursday.

“We take the positive out of it (whether an effort like Saturday’s or Monday’s), we learn,” Pastrnak said.

The Oilers — who sit second in the Pacific Division but with four games in hand on the first-place Vancouver Canucks — are on a four-game win streak and begin a four-game road trip after cruising to a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

It was a good day up and down the Edmonton lineup as six players recorded multiple points, including Zach Hyman (two goals), Leon Draisaitl (three assists), Connor McDavid and Ryan McLeod (one goal, one assist each).

“You need those games every once in a while, but we put a lot of work into creating a game like that. It doesn’t just happen,” Draisaitl said. “We put a lot of work into it and did the little things right. Every once in a while a game like that is nice.”

Draisaitl has three goals and 10 points across his last six games.

McDavid is on an 11-game point streak over which he has posted 26 points, 24 of which are assists.

Despite those incredible scoring talents, great goaltending has been a key to the recent run. Calvin Pickard, who has won eight of his 11 starts, made 22 stops against Pittsburgh.

“Maybe three of the (last four games) we could have easily lost,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “Goaltending was outstanding. So, good defense usually wins you games. You look at our goals-against, down. And also our penalty kill is looking a lot better than it had been previously.”

Lightning’s Hagel Burns Bruins in OT

TAMPA-ST. PETE – Tampa’s Brandon Hagel scored on a breakaway 1:19 into overtime as the Tampa Bay Lightning took down the NHL’s top club, topping the visiting Boston Bruins 5-4 on Monday night.

After winning the overtime face-off and keeping possession the entire three-on-three session, Victor Hedman found Hagel on a breakaway off a line change.

Hagel slipped his ninth goal through the legs of goaltender Jeremy Swayman (41 saves) as the Lightning won for the first time in five overtime games.

Hagel and Steven Stamkos each had a goal and an assist, while Tanner Jeannot, Nicholas Paul and Austin Watson scored to help Tampa Bay improve to 6-2-2 at home and win its third straight game. Goalie Jonas Johansson stopped 23 shots.

David Pastrnak recorded a goal and an assist, and Pavel Zacha and John Beecher each scored for the Bruins, who dropped to 7-1-2 in their past 10 games and are 2-3 in overtime.

To open the second game on their three-game homestand, the Lightning went up 1-0 on a delayed penalty, as Jeannot scored his fourth goal at 6:39.

However, the visitors scored the equalizer off a turnover when Pastrnak skated in and reversed a pass to Zacha, who deposited his seventh goal at 9:55.

During a testy second period that resulted in three of the six minor penalties being for roughing, the Lightning had a five-on-three and four-on-three power play.

But Paul put his club up 2-1 when he deflected in a wide shot from Mikhail Sergachev with 30 seconds remaining in the frame.

Starting the third trailing for just the second time in 17 games, the Bruins evened it 2-all when Pastrnak blistered his 12th goal from way above the left circle at 6:26, then the club quickly took its first lead.

It kept the puck in the offensive zone, and the puck found its way to Beecher, who slipped his second tally by Johansson just 82 seconds after Pastrnak’s goal.

On his first point of the season, Watson flipped in the game-tying goal from the bottom of the right circle less than a minute later.

James van Riemsdyk won a battle behind the Lightning goal and put the puck on Coyle’s stick for his sixth tally at 16:09.

However, Stamkos’ seventh marker tied it with. 4.8 seconds left to send the match to overtime.
