PGA Tour: SONY Open in Hawaii Preview

January 12, 2022 by PGA Tour Brunch

The SONY Open in Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii – As the PGA Tour island-hops from Maui to Oahu for this week’s SONY Open in Hawaii, the early week focus has been on the passing of Tim Rosaforte, the popular Golf TV commentator and most accomplished reporters. Rosaforte passed away at the young age of 66 from an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s disease.

On the links, the question at the SONY Open is always whether the players who competed at the year-opening Sentry Tournament of Champions have an edge at this tournament. Aside from adjusting to the Hawaiian Islands time zone, the other key difference is the full field of PGA Tour pros vs the relatively calm group of 37 champions who competed last weekend.

Australia’s Cameron Smith took the honors at Kapalua, outlasting the birdie-making machine of Jon Rahm. Rahm is passing on competing this week.

Reigning champion Kevin Na shot all four rounds in the 60s last week but finished 13th in the ultra-competitive event. Last year here at Waialae Country Club, Na posted a third-round (61) to make the difference for his $1,188,000 take home, beating the T-2s of Chris Kirk and Joaquin Neimann by a stroke.

Meanwhile, Rahm and two-time Sentry Tournament of Champions winner Justin Thomas each set the tournament record with matching 12-under (61s).

The third-round scoring average (67.711) was the lowest in a single round since the event moved to The Plantation Course in 1999.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions

Kapalua, Hawaii – Thirty-seven PGA Tour champions and Tokyo Olympic Games gold medalist Xander Schauffele will tee-it-up for the first tour event of 2022. The backdrop is one of the most beautiful places on earth in Kapalua (Maui) Hawaii, the longtime host course for the Tournament of Champions.

In 2021, the Plantation Course at Kapalua was voted the No. 1 course in Hawaii for the 15th time by Golfweek. This season (2022) marks the 30th anniversary of Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course as the iconic Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design first opened for play in 1992. Designed on a grand scale, the 7,596-yard, par 73 Plantatio Course plays along the slopes of the West Maui Mountains boasting dramatic ocean views from virtually every hole. The perennial Top 100 Course(in the world) underwent a well-documented restoration in 2019 which focused on recapturing the essence and playing characteristics of the (then) nearly three decade-old course. During the 2019 restoration/refinement project, enhancements were made to the Plantation Course, including new bunkers; new Celebration Bermuda Turf on tees, fairways and roughs; and rebuilt and resurfaced green complexes. The overall Plantation Course layout and routing remained the same.

The course record is (62) held by K.J. Choi in 2003, Graeme McDowell in 2011, Jason Day and Chris Kirk in 2015, and Xander Schauffele in 2019 at this Tournament of Champions event.

Phil Mickelson will compete at the TofC for the first time since 2001 when he finished 28th in the 33-player field. With Mickelson, the 2021 PGA Champion, playing, all four of golf’s major champions will be at Kapalua, including Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm and the winner of The Open, Collin Morikawa.

The Basics:

With the limited field of 38 and the time zone adjustment to Hawaii, the Sentry Tee Times start Thursday at 9:40am (local)/2:40pm (ET)and going to 12:45pm (local)/5:45pm (ET).

Cameron Champ withdrew from the Sentry event after testing positive for COVID-19, the Tour announced Tuesday.

2021 Ryder Cup Preview: Brooks Koepka Fuels an Old-Fashioned Controversy

September 20, 2021 by PGA Tour Brunch

KOHLER – What’s the run-up to the Ryder Cup without a little Team USA controversy? While Team Europe seems to groove into its own special chemistry for each Ryder Cup event, the U S of A always approaches the match play tournament with a combination of complaining, griping, and theatrics.

This year the controversy started with comments by Brooks Koepka and were magnified with Paul Azinger did a media-only call to promote NBC Sports coverage of the event.

Let the commentary speak for itself:

“It’s tough,” said Koepka to Golf Digest. “There are times where I’m like, I won my match. I did my job. What do you want from me? I know how to take responsibility for the shots I hit every week. Now, somebody else hit a bad shot and left me in a bad spot, and I know this hole is a loss. That’s new, and you have to change the way you think about things. You go from an individual sport all the time to a team sport one week a year,” he said to a question about the differences between the PGA Tour and Ryder Cup (team) format.

“Brooks, I just read that article, I’m not sure he loves the Ryder Cup that much,” Azinger said during an NBC Golf call with the media. “If he doesn’t love it, he should relinquish his spot and get people there who do love the Ryder Cup.

“Not everybody embraces it. But if you don’t love it, and you’re not sold out, then I think Brooks should, you know, especially being hurt, consider whether or not he really wants to be there,” added Azinger.

“And then if you add the Bryson dynamic to that, that might be an easier decision for him. But Brooks is one of the most candid, most honest guys there ever ism and if he’s blatantly honest with himself and he doesn’t want to be there, he should come out and say it. But, I don’t know, I’m a fan of both players, and I just feel like it’s gonna be one or the other. They’re gonna put the weight of the team on their shoulders or they’re gonna be a pain in the neck,” noted Azinger.

Ryder Cup News & Notes

  • The September 24th golf tournament marks the beginning of the much-awaited 2020ne Ryder Cup competition, delayed a year because of the restrictions in travel for the COVID-19 global pandemic. There will be a combination of celebrity matches, practice rounds, a pre-opening ceremony, then the official Opening Ceremony at Whistling Straits’ Dye Plaza.
  • It is customary for the two team captains to reveal their planned line-ups for Friday morning’s foursome matches.
  • Aside from the constant controversy with Bryson DeChambeau and now former great and current TV commentator Paul Azinger, Brooks Koepka says he’s “ready to go” after a hand injury while hacking through the root of a tree at the TOUR Championship two weeks ago. “I’ll be there. I’m good to go,” he said via text message to Golf Week on Wednesday. “I’m feeling good. Been doing my rehab, doing everything I need to do to be ready for the Cup. I’ll be there ready to play.”
