Something’s Fishy at Fenway

BOSTON – There’s something fishy at Fenway and it’s not the old story about a ballpark under sea level, three rainy days and fish floating upstream and into the outfield drains and the visitor’s dugout. (It really happened, according to former Boston Globe baseball writer, Peter Gammons).

Today’s fish story really happened, too.

The Boston Red Sox were winning 3-1, after scoring an Arbella in the 7th inning when corner infielder Abraham Toro hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Wilyer Abreu from third base after Abreu and Romy Gonzalez hit consecutive singles.

After pitching seven innings of one run, three hit baseball, Sox starter Garrett Crochet gave way to reliever Garrett Whitlock in the 8th. It was one too many Garretts for the day, as the latter gave up a pair of singles and hit a batter to allow the Florida Marlins … aka, the fish … to swim upstream and make it 3-2, Boston.

Boston Manager Alex Cora was navigating around the fact his club gave up late innings runs just yesterday and the Sox skipper was forced to play closer Aroldis Chapman to secure a 7-5 victory. Cora had to improvise or risk burning his elite closer out before the home stretch for contenders comes in September.

Cora tapped reliever Greg Weissert for the top of the 9th and – TIE GAME – as Marlins CF Dane Myers blasted a solo home run 385 feet to right center, prompting Cora to change gears and pitchers after Miami first baseman Eric Wagaman singled to put the go-ahead run on base.

Lefty Steven Matz entered the game mid-inning and pinch hitter Jacob Marsee laced a 394-foot, two-run homer to provide the Marlins with a 5-3, come-from-behind victory – at the cost of a shakey bullpen, sans Chapman.

Boston had two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but backstop Carlos Narvaez flied out to right against Miami reliever Anthony Bender to end the game.

Tyler Phillips (2-1) collected the win for pitching a scoreless eighth. Bender picked up his fourth save.

Despite the loss, Boston is 16-3 in their last 19 home games and 57-2 when leading after eight innings, but they’ve dropped six of their last 10 games, since August 6. That was following a seven-game winning streak.

Crochet, the Boston ace, is 13-5 on the season and lost the chance for his 14th victory.

Scheffler’s the One

OWINGS MILLS – (Wire Service Report) – Scottie Scheffler pitched in for birdie at the 17th hole and held on to defeat Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by two shots at the BMW Championship, held at Caves Valley Golf Club just outside of Baltimore.

Scheffler posted a 3-under-par 67 to finish the week at 15-under 265. It took him little time to surpass MacIntyre — the sole leader after each of the first three rounds at the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs — as he struggled to a 3-over 73.

Scheffler had an uneven back nine that included two of his three bogeys. But after both he and MacIntyre missed the green at the difficult par-3 17th, Scheffler aimed a perfect pitch shot that took a full 12 seconds to trickle down the length of the green and directly into the hole.

Maverick McNealy posted a bogey-free 66 and captured third at 11 under. Englishman Tommy Fleetwood (67) and Sam Burns (68) tied for fourth at 10 under.

Scheffler, 29, earned his 18th win on the PGA Tour — all of them coming since February 2022. He will be the heavy favorite to repeat at the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta, although the 2025 format will have all 30 finalists starting at Even par, rather than Scheffler being (-10) upon the start as in past years.

MacIntyre, who totaled just three bogeys over the first three rounds, bogeyed three of his first five holes Sunday to squander a four-shot lead. He hit only half of the fairways and greens in regulation and did not make a birdie until the par-5 No. 16.

The first hole saw a two-shot swing, as Scheffler played it perfectly for a birdie and MacIntyre missed the fairway, the green and the 7-foot par save.

MacIntyre unraveled. He missed the green in regulation again at Nos. 2 and 5 and failed to save par. The third bogey created a tie with Scheffler at 13 under, and two holes later, Scheffler knocked in a 6-footer for birdie and the outright lead.

Scheffler stuck his approach at the 11th to 3 feet for an easy birdie. His putter acted up on him at Nos. 12 and 14, leading to bogeys from close range, but MacIntyre dropped another shot after missing the green at the par-3 13th.

TL’s Sunday Sports Notes | Aug 17

BOSTON – HBO’s “HARD KNOCKS” is the best sports television show in history. It’s not even close. While Ernie (Johnson, Jr.), Charles (Barkley), Kenny (Smith) and Shaq (O’Neal) of Turner Sports fame can make you laugh out loud every time, not one of the “Inside the NBA” shows has ever made me feel like running through a wall after watching the show. Hard Knocks does that. Every episode.

Just hearing the Hard Knocks theme song gets me revved-up and there’s been no highlight show or team documentary that has ever come close to unearthing such emotion. Hard Knocks often features a team I couldn’t care less about in the fixtures of the NFL, yet each summer I, along with legions of sports fans, come away from a few episodes of a weekly TV show rooting like hell for the team that’s been featured.

That is happening this year as the Buffalo Bills are featured and Tuesday night marked just the second episode of the 2025 version of the show which debuted in the “Way Back Machine” with the Baltimore Ravens in 2001.

The NFL and HBO have called Hard Knocks “the first sports-based reality series” in television history. That’s B.S. because long before 2001, anyone and everyone in the sports industry realized we had the best reality programming in history, and it was our games themselves.

CBS reality series – Survivor – premiered on May 31, 2000. Executive Producer Mark Burnett hatched an idea that – somehow – has lasted 25 years, with the property gaining and keeping its loyal audience while also spinning out other reality shows on everything from cooking/chefs to swamp people.

Facing facts, reality shows can easily be taped and watched at a later date, although office water cooler talk might spoil a surprise ending. Sports, on the other hand, has to be watched live. Every sports fan knows it and it’s impossible to steer clear of the score of a game unless you’re asleep and watch the game before leaving your bed or touching your phone device.

Hard Knocks married the two and has become must see TV, especially as avid NFL fans countdown the days to the opening weekend of football. The Hard Knocks theme song prompts the visceral reaction of the human mind and body.

The theme was written for NFL Films by David Robidoux, a music composer who hails from the tough town of Reading, Pennsylvania. Robidoux is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music with degrees in audio engineering and film scoring. He began working for NFL Films in 1991 and is a 40-time EMMY nominee and 15-time EMMY Award winner. He’s created nearly 3,000 compositions for the NFL alone but has done everything from a Dressage routine for US Olympian Laura Graves in the Rio 2016 Olympics, featuring “Man Of War” to a “40 Years of NFL Films Music” 10 CD Box Set.

If the theme doesn’t cement you in your armchair for an hour, then the voice of narrator Liev Schreiber will provide you with chills throughout every episode. Schreiber, best known for his acting role as Marty Baron – editor-in-chief of the Boston Globe in the Academy Award winning movie, Spotlight, was so perfectly cast to be the voice of Hard Knocks. Back in 2023, when Hard Knocks was featuring the New York Jets, then-Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers referred to Schreiber as “the voice of God” for his efforts in the series, and rightfully so, as the actor has been with the docuseries each and every episode – all but one season. In 2007, he didn’t narrate and turned the duties to Kansas City Chiefs fan Paul Rudd.

Schreiber’s only on screen performance came in that J-E-T-S season when he choppered over to NYJ training camp for a look-see and meet & greet with the Jets players and coaches. This year, with the Bills, Schreiber is back in the familiar place of narration – Thank God.

That brings us to the content (and buzzword 🚨 alert) storytelling. Hard Knocks covers training camp of NFL teams, but its secret sauce is the character development created on each and every episode. Sure, a fixed camera in the GM’s office secretly filming a player being cut from the team has been the type of behind the scenes access NFL fans dreamt they watch, but the more compelling storylines are the deep dives into the off field lives of the players. Often depicted with their families or pictured in everyday life, shopping or mixing up a breakfast smoothie for a roommate/teammate, the bond created by Hard Knocks with the rank and file players of each team, create that magical fan to player love affair that is the very root of all sports.

Yes, sometimes, that player/character who became the unexpected star of an episode is later cut from the team and it draws on a fans raw emotions, fully understanding what a player and his wife/family have gone through during camp.

One such player was John Connor, aka “The Terminator.” Then-New York Jets coach Rex Ryan tagged the nickname on Connor (not to be confused with Arizona Cardinals running back, James Conner). Fans of the J-E-T-S fell head over heels for Connor when, as a fullback, he was assigned to be a lead blocker and clear a hole for his running backs. Connor didn’t make a block, he often hit defenders so hard, they’d drop to their knees and be carted off the field, dazed and confused by the alien that just ran them over – thus, the nickname, “The Terminator.”

Of course, the reality of NFL camp took over when Connor was sidelined with an MCL sprain and hamstring injury and was released by the Jets a month into the 2012 season. He bounced from New York to Cincinnati, back to New York for a short stint with the Giants and Jets (again), before playing his final NFL camp with the Buffalo Bills where he was among the final cuts on September 4, 2015.

Connor’s career stat line in the NFL consists of 108 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, along with 12 receptions and a pass receiving TD. His game did not stand out for NFL teams, but, through Hard Knocks, his name will live on forever.

HERE NOW, THE NOTES: Boston University is facing a lawsuit from Baylor University over a logo battle. The complaint was filed this week in Waco, Texas – where Baylor is located – and it seeks to prevent Boston University from using an “a specific interlocking BU design that is identical or strikingly similar to Baylor’s federally registered marks.” Baylor University noted it’s been using the interlocking BU letters since, at least, 1912 and the school registered for a trademark in 1987. The lawsuit says Boston University initially opposed the application, but the schools reached an agreement and Boston University has been using the letters side-by-side in its logo.

But the settlement went South, the lawsuit alleges, as Baylor found out – back in 2018 – that Boston University was using the interlocking BU on different hat styles in its campus store. Baylor asked Boston University to cease and desist in 2021, but the request was ignored. “Rather, its use has continued to expand, and a very large number of such goods now appears on the Defendant’s website,” Baylor said in the complaint.

A spokesperson for Boston University told WBZ-TV in Boston that the school does not comment on pending litigation. Meanwhile, Baylor is asking a judge to permanently stop Boston University from using the interlocking BU, and to destroy any products or signs with that specific logo.

WWYI wonders if Baylor would settle the case by playing an ice hockey game, with the winner getting rights to the BU. Surely, Baylor would rather play football.

TIDBITS & NUGGETS: Close to the old homestead, and alma mater is fact St. John’s President, Reverend Brian J. Shanley, OP, has been named Chair of the Big East Conference Board of Directors. This prestigious role is a testament to his leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to both academics and athletics. … In other words, St. John’s better get all the close calls on the court this coming season. … Former PGA Tour TV guru and WNBA Commissioner (2005-11) Donna Orender is trying hoops again. Orender is Commissioner of The UpShot League, a development league for women’s basketball (a la WNBA). The league is scheduled to play in May 2026. The UPSHOT League’s regular-season schedule will consist of 40 games, including 20 at home and 20 on the road for only four teams. Currently, the clubs are:

  • UpShot Charlotte
  • UpShot Greensboro
  • UpShot Jacksonville
  • UpShot Savannah – (Might they be named the Savannah Roseannadannas)?

The new league is being organized by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment, a firm that owns, manages, and operates the Jacksonville Icemen, Savannah Ghost Pirates, Greensboro Gargoyles, 32 Degrees Marketing, Community First Igloo, Charlotte Checkers, and Gastonia Ghost Peppers. Zawyer Sports is in the business of hosting family based entertainment. Investors include, Cheryl Miller and Anne Meyers Drysdale, among others.

SOX STUFF: Aside from the hot, hot, hot Milwaukee Brewers (NL), the Boston Red Sox are second-best in the majors and an AL-best 26-12 since July 1. … At Fenway Park, the Sox are a scorching 16-2 in their last 18 games, 18-3 in their last 21 home games, and 25-6 in their last 31. … Not surprisingly, the Red Sox have sold out for their last 13 games, with Saturday’s crowd of 36,192 the most recent crowd. … The Red Sox starting pitchers lead the American League with 57 quality starts. … Boston ace Garrett Crochet will take to the mound vs the Marlins on Sunday (1:35pm).

C’Ya Next Year Marcelo

BOSTON – (Wire Service Report) – Boston Red Sox versatile rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer will undergo surgery on his right wrist that will end his season, manager Alex Cora announced Sunday. Per Cora, Mayer will be sidelined three months following the surgery but is expected to be ready for spring training.

“I’m really sad about what’s going on,” Mayer told reporters. “I want to play. I want to help the team win. But that’s just the hand I’m dealt with right now.”

Mayer sustained the injury after swinging — and missing — at a pitch by Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Jesus Luzardo in Boston’s 9-8 victory in 11 innings on July 23. Mayer was placed on the 10-day injured list two days later, and his body did not respond favorably to a cortisone injection in his wrist in early August.

Mayer, 22, previously dealt with this type of injury in 2022 while in the minors.

He made his major league debut against the Baltimore Orioles on May 24 and cracked his first home run at Yankee Stadium on June 6.

Mayer, who played both third and second base in the field, batted .228 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 44 games. He was selected by the Red Sox with the fourth overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft out of high school in Chula Vista, California.

Story Book Start; Shakey Ending

BOSTON – (Staff and wire Service Report) – Boston’s Trevor Story had two hits, including a three-run home run, to lead the hometown Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the visiting Miami Marlins on Saturday. The Red Sox are 16-2 in their last 18 games at Fenway Park.

Story’s home run came against Miami starter Cal Quantrill and was part of a four-run third inning. After Jarren Duran hit an RBI double that allowed Roman Anthony to score, Story hit his 19th home run of the season to give Boston a 6-0 lead. Duran and Alex Bregman also scored on the home run.

Anthony and Bregman both added two hits for the Red Sox, who received 6 1/3 innings from starter Brayan Bello (9-6). Bello allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two.

Troy Johnston and Agustin Ramirez each hit a solo home run for Miami. Johnston’s homer was the first of his major league career. Both home runs came against Bello.

The Marlins have lost three games in a row, and seven of their last eight.

Quantrill (4-10) was pulled with two outs in the fourth. He allowed seven runs on eight hits, struck out two and walked one.

The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead on Masataka Yoshida’s two-run single in the first inning. After the four-run third extended Boston’s lead to 6-0, Bregman drove in Ceddanne Rafaela with a single to give the Red Sox a 7-0 advantage.

Johnston’s home run made it 7-1 in the fifth, and Ramirez hit his 18th home run of the season in the seventh. Johnston and Ramirez each collected two of Miami’s eight hits.

Miami made things interesting by scoring three runs against Sox reliever Isaiah Campbell in the ninth. Ramirez scored on an Heriberto Hernandez single, Hernandez scored on Eric Wagaman’s triple and Derek Hill’s single drove in Wagaman to cap the scoring.

Aroldis Chapman recorded the final out to earn his 22nd save.

The Marlins played without left fielder Kyle Stowers, who was given the day off after feeling tightness in his left side during Friday night’s 2-1 loss to Boston.

Ole ‘Mo is Back at Fenway

BOSTON – Momentum is the heartbeat of a Major League Baseball team when the calendar reads August 15th, so soon to be September 1st.

Yes, the definition is pressure-packed baseball, as in Momentum: “The driving force or advancing strength of a development or course of events.”

Winning two of their last three games after losing four of their previous five is a combination of lively heartbeats and killer heart-ache. It’s been the driving characteristic of the 2025 Boston Red Sox.

Now, Boston is an American League-best 25-12 (.676) since the start of July, and the Sox hold MLB’s second-best record in that span, only behind the NL’s Milwaukee Brewers (30-7).

Yet, games like Friday night’s 2-1 cliff-hanger have defined what the Summer of ’25 has been for Alex Cora and the Red Sox.

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara threw six innings of one-hit ball but let up a single run in the sixth. Boston Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito scattered seven hits but allowed only one run which came in the third inning. From the 1-1 tie in the 6th, with bullpens taking over the mound, it was anyone’s game.

Giolito gave up consecutive doubles to Miami’s second baseman Xavier Edwards and left fielder Kyle Stowers which produced the only run for the Marlins as they faced a sturdy Giolito and three other Red Sox pitchers.

Boston tied the game in the sixth when DH Roman Anthony drew a walk and third baseman Alex Bregman doubled him in to score from first base. The game remained 1-1 until the ninth inning.

Alcantara, who went 6.0 IP, two hits, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts (86 pitches/65 strikes) gave way to RHP Anthony Bender in the 7th inning who gave way to RHP Lake Bacher in the 8th.

Giolito went 6.1 IP, seven hits, one run, one walk and five strikeouts but gave way to LHP Justin Wilson in the 7th who gave the ball to Garrett Whitlock in the 8th.

Arnoldis Chapman, Boston’s all-star closer pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning, striking out first baseman Eric Wagaman.

It was a game of chess for managers Clayton McCullough of the Marlins and Alex Cora of the Red Sox. McCullough chose not to play newfound closer designee Ronny Henriquez in the 9th and, instead, went with LHP Josh Simpson.

Simpson walked lead-off hitter Anthony and No. 2 hitter Bregman, then with none out and two on base, proceeded to hit Jarren Duran with a pitch to load the bases with none out.

All eyes turned to Boston veteran shortstop Trevor Story who delivered a game-winning base hit to right field to score Anthony for a 2-1 Boston walk-off victory.

Anthony scored both of Boston’s runs and Story went 2-for-4 with several stellar defensive plays, including turning a nidty inning ending double play in the 7th.

Chapman (4-2) was credited with the win, while Simpson (2-2) was charged with the loss.

The game was played in front of a sellout crowd of 36, 854 fans at Fenway Park.

The two clubs play the second game of a three-game series Saturday at 4:10pm. Brayan Bello (8-6) is scheduled to start for Boston while Cal Quantrill (4-9) will start for the Marlins.

 

 

 

Red Sox: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

HOUSTON – (Wire Service Report) – Houston’s starting pitcher Hunter Brown threw 6 2/3 strong innings and his battery-mate Yainer Diaz drove in three runs as the Astros beat the visiting Boston Red Sox, 4-1, on Wednesday in the rubber match of the three-game series.

Brown (10-5) snapped a six-start winless streak by producing his 15th quality start of the season. Diaz finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and an RBI single to pace the Houston offense.

The Astros scored two runs against Red Sox starter Walker Buehler (7-7) in the bottom of the first inning. Jeremy Pena led off the frame with his 13th homer, drilling a 3-1 fastball 358 feet out to left field. Jose Altuve and Victor Caratini then worked walks before Diaz lined the first pitch he saw to left for an RBI double.

Buehler then found his stride. He retired Ramon Urias to strand two runners and initiate a stretch in which he retired 15 of 16 batters, needing only four pitches to complete the bottom of the fifth.

But after retiring Altuve and Christian Walker to open the sixth, Buehler issued a four-pitch walk to Caratini before Diaz struck again, blasting a 415-foot homer to left-center, his 17th homer of the season, to extend the lead to three runs.

Buehler allowed four runs on four hits and four walks, with three strikeouts, over six innings.

Brown retired the Red Sox in order in the first but scuffled an inning later, allowing four baserunners as Boston sliced its two-run deficit in half. Trevor Story, who reached on a leadoff double, scored on Ceddanne Rafaela’s two-out single to center field.

Brown eluded further trouble with a strikeout of Connor Wong then retired the side in order in the third and fifth innings and stranded Jarren Duran at third to cap the sixth. Brown allowed one run on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Bennett Sousa relieved Brown with two outs in the seventh and struck out Roman Anthony to end that frame. Bryan Abreu notched his first save while stranding a pair of runners in the ninth.

Red Sox Face Astros in Rubber Game

HOUSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – After the Houston Astros welcomed back Cristian Javier to their starting rotation on Monday following a 15-month absence due to Tommy John surgery, All-Star closer Josh Hader took his place on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder discomfort.

Astros manager Joe Espada was non-committal when asked who would replace Hader at the back end of the bullpen. Right-hander Bryan Abreu seems the logical choice given his role setting up Hader, but Espada remains open to utilizing multiple options.

It’s uncertain how that may shake out on Wednesday when the Astros host the Boston Red Sox in the rubber match of their three-game series.

“For me, and I was talking to the relievers about this, for Josh Hader to be how successful he’s been, he needs guys to give him the ball with the lead,” Espada said. “All these guys have set him up to be the closer that he is. Not to take anything away from Josh. Josh is probably the best. But you need guys to help him get to that point, and these guys are capable of doing that. What you guys saw (Monday) with us piecing it together, we’re going to have to do more of that.

“I told them to be ready to go, and they’ve been ready to go the whole entire season. We have the weapons to do it.”

Right-hander Hunter Brown (9-5, 2.51 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Astros, one day after the team dropped a 14-1 decision.

Brown did not factor into the decision of a 5-3 road victory over the New York Yankees on Friday after allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. He remained winless over his last six starts and is 0-2 with a 4.73 ERA during that stretch.

Among American League pitchers, Brown ranks first in hits per nine innings (6.21), second in opponent OPS (.571), and third in ERA and strikeouts (160).

Brown is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in two career starts against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision of a 2-1 road loss on Aug. 1 after surrendering one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings.

Right-hander Walker Buehler (7-6, 5.40) has the starting assignment for Boston on Wednesday.

Buehler twirled six shutout innings in a 10-2 road win over the San Diego Padres on Friday, allowing four hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts.

He is 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA over his last six starts. Before that stretch. Buehler had dropped five of six decisions while recording a 9.29 ERA.

Buehler is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA over four career starts against Houston. He did not factor into the decision of a 7-3 win over the Astros on Aug. 2 after allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora started Abraham Toro at first base for the second time in the series on Tuesday, but is likely to start Romy Gonzalez at first in the series finale. Cora cited the balance the switch-hitting Toro and right-handed Gonzalez can offer his offensive attack.

“We’re going to mix and match,” Cora said. “Romy will probably play first (Wednesday). Try to keep the balance of the lineup. When teams have three lefties in the bullpen, it’s smart to keep Ref (Rob Refsnyder) and Romy on the bench if we’re going to be aggressive pinch-hitting. Having Abe swing the bat well is going to help us.”

Astros Additions Sink Sox

HOUSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The Houston Astros debuted their three additions made at the trade deadline to their home fans on Monday in the opener of a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.

For an offense that has been compromised by injury for lengthy stretches this season, the results were favorable.

Carlos Correa delivered an RBI single to ignite an uprising against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet, and Ramon Urias added a two-run homer that proved to be the difference in a 7-6 win. Jesus Sanchez was used as a pinch hitter in the eighth as Houston flashed the potential of its reinforcements heading into Tuesday’s rematch against Boston.

The Astros remain without Yordan Alvarez (hand) and Jake Meyers (calf), but their breakout against Crochet provided a snapshot of what their lineup could accomplish when fully healthy.

“Yes, and imagine when those guys get back,” Astros manager Joe Espada said of Alvarez and Meyers. “But, again, they’re not here, and I give credit to these guys that continue to battle every day. They continue to give quality at-bats, and we’re fighting through this.”

As has been the case for most of this injury-plagued season, the Astros were shorthanded on Monday. All-Star closer Josh Hader had his left shoulder examined pregame in response to discomfort, while setup relievers Bryan King and Bryan Abreu were both unavailable. Their absences forced Espada to mix and match over the final four innings.

“That was kind of fun,” Espada said. “Because I trust this bullpen. These guys have been good for us the entire year, and we need them.”

Right-hander Spencer Arrighetti (1-2, 7.43 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Astros on Tuesday.

He made his return from a four-month stint on the injured list (fractured thumb) against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday and allowed five runs on 11 hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss. It marked just the third start of the season for Arrighetti.

Arrighetti made one start against the Red Sox last season as a rookie. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk with a career-high 13 strikeouts in seven innings in a 5-4 win on Aug. 10.

Right-hander Dustin May (6-8, 4.93) has the starting assignment for the Red Sox on Tuesday.

May allowed three runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in his first start for the Red Sox following his trade- deadline acquisition from the Los Angeles Dodgers. He alternated wins and losses over his last six decisions and seven starts with the Dodgers, going 3-3 with a 5.54 ERA in that span.

In his lone career start against the Astros, May allowed one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings but did not factor into the decision of a 4-2 win on July 29, 2020, while pitching for the Dodgers.

Not only was Correa playing in Houston for the first time since being reacquired him from the Minnesota Twins, but Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman made his return following nine seasons with the Astros. Bregman, who finished 2-for-4 with a home run, reflected on the warm ovation he received from the crowd and how the Red Sox fashioned a late rally to get within a run.

“I feel like we’re playing really good baseball,” Bregman said. “Everyone in here is getting better and better every single game. I think we’re going to be right where we want to be.”
