PGA Tour: Potgieter Wins in Playoff

DETROIT – (Wire Service Report) – As a grueling playoff unfolded in the Rocket Classic, South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter was determined to have enough pace on what became the final putt Sunday.

Potgieter drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to secure his first PGA Tour victory by winning the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

“Struggled to make putts. Left a lot short,” Potgieter said. “Finally got one to the hole.”

Potgieter outlasted Max Greyserman in an extended playoff that began with three golfers. Chris Kirk’s bogey on the second playoff hole cost him a chance and reduced the playoff to two golfers.

Potgieter, a big-hitting 20-year-old, began the tournament with a 62 on Thursday and ended up with the biggest prize. He is the youngest South African to win on tour.

“Big thanks to my family, friends, coaches, everyone who has been involved to kind of get me to this point,” Potgieter said.

The trio of Potgieter, Greyserman and Kirk finished 72 holes at 22-under-par 266.

“This one is going to sting a little bit,” Greyserman said.

Potgieter, who became the seventh-youngest PGA Tour winner since 1983, and Greyserman both had birdies on the par-5 14th hole — the fourth stop in the playoff — before Potgieter sank the winning putt on the par-3 15th hole.

Kirk and Greyserman shot final-round 5-under-par 67s and Potgieter, who was the first- and third-round leader, had 69.

Kirk had the best chance on the first playoff hole, but he was off the mark on a birdie putt of slightly more than 9 feet.

“It’s a shame that first playoff hole,” Kirk said. “Hit just three perfect shots and I misread that putt a little bit. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Greyserman missed from 11 feet on the second extra hole before Kirk was eliminated with a three-putt bogey moments later.

“Just really disappointed right now,” Kirk said. “Felt like I played great today. I’m happy with the way I played.”

Sox Drop Series to Blue Jays

BOSTON – If Major League Baseball would determine series wins by cumulative score, the Boston Red Sox would’ve defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 18-15. That’s not the way it works.

In the rubber game of their three game series played under bright sunshine at Fenway Park on Sunday, Toronto beat Boston, 5-3. Red Sox starter Walker Buehler took his sixth loss of the season, largely because he let up back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning.

Blue Jays right fielder Addison Barger, batting second, took Buehler long with a liner to right field to make it 1-0. Batting third, slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. plopped a long drive into the second row of fans in the Green Monster seats in left field to make it 2-0, Toronto.

In the second inning, Boston was able to fight back and tie the game, utilizing a solo home run by catcher Carlos Narvaez and a double by centerfielder Ceddanne Rafaela who knocked in shortstop Trevor Story. Story had singled and then stole second base.

The Jays doomed Buehler in the visitor’s fourth inning, as the Boston starter allowed three walks sprinkled through an infield hit by centerfielder Nathan Lukes and a run-scoring single to right field by second baseman Andres Gimenez which scored Lukes.

Buehler was relieved in the fifth inning, but reliever Zack Kelly allowed a Lukes singled to score veteran shortstop Bo Bichette who had doubled off Kelly to lead off the inning.

The series had a very strange vibe, as Toronto opened the three-game set with a 9-0 victory on Friday night only to lose 15-1 on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, Jays reliever Yariel Rodriguez (2-0) earned the victory while Buehler’s record dropped to (5-6). Toronto closer Jeff Hoffman earned his 18th save of the season.

Boston fell to 13-13-1 in season series, 6-6-1 at home. Boston has allowed 5+ runs for the seventh time in the last 11 games, dating back to June 17. Boston has lost seven of their last eight , dating back to June 21. Previously, they won 10 of 12 games.

For the Red Sox, it’s on to Cincinnati as the Reds visit Fenway for a three-game set where the Sox will memorialize their 1975 American League title, but World Series loss to the Reds in one of the great Fall classics of our time.

  • Reliever Zack Kelly left the game after facing only one batter in the sixth inning, suffering from right oblique tightness.
  • Toronto’s back-to-back HRs today marked the third time they hit back-to-backs this season.
  • Toronto is 29-18 (.617) since May 8, trailing only AL clubs Tampa Bay and Houston during that span.

D. Wayne Lukas, 89

LOUISVILLE – (Wire Service Report) – Hall of Fame horse trainer D. Wayne Lukas died at his home on Sunday. He had been reported as “gravely ill” and was under hospice care.

The Lukas family issued a statement Sunday that said the 89-year-old had been hospitalized with a severe infection and declined to go through the “aggressive treatment plan” doctors in his hometown in Kentucky had outlined.

USA Today reported earlier in the week that Lukas has returned to his home and is under hospice care to spend his remaining days with his wife, Laurie, and their extended family.

“Wayne is one of the greatest competitors and most important figures in Thoroughbred racing history,” said Mike Anderson, president of Churchill Downs Racetrack. “He transcended the sport of horse racing and took the industry to new levels. The lasting impact of his character and wisdom — from his acute horsemanship to his unmatched attention to detail — will be truly missed. The enormity of this news is immense, and our prayers are with his family and friends around the world during this difficult time.”

The horses trained by Lukas are now under the guidance of Sebastian “Bas” Nicholl via the succession plan of Lukas Enterprises Inc. Nicholl is the longtime assistant to Lukas.

NHL Entry Draft: A Deep 2025 Draft

LOS ANGELES – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – The NHL Draft was held on Friday night and the New York Islanders selected No. 1 for the fifth time in franchise history and first since 2009. The Isles made highly touted defenseman Matthew Schaefer of the Erie Otters the top pick. Schaefer became the first OHL player to go first overall in the Draft since Connor McDavid in 2015 (also out of Erie) and the first OHL defenseman to be picked at No. 1 in more than a decade, with Aaron Ekblad (2014) the last before him.

An emotional moment for any top pick of a major league sports draft, the dream-fulfilling night had added meaning for Schaefer who lost his mother, Jennifer, to breast cancer in February 2024.

A few picks after the Islanders, the Boston Bruins selected forward James Hagens in the first round (7th overall) of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Hagens, 18, appeared in 37 games for Boston College during the 2024-25 season, recording 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points, with a plus-21 rating. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound forward ranked third among Boston skaters and fourth among NCAA freshmen in points, earning a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.

In 2023-24, Hagens appeared in 58 games for the U.S. National U18 Team, as part of the National Team Development Program, totaling 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points. The Hauppauge, Long Island, NY native was part of the United States’ gold medal-winning team at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, ranking second among U.S. skaters in points (nine). Hagens was named most valuable player after leading tournament scoring at the 2024 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship, recording 22 points in seven games to help Team USA win the silver medal.

He also won gold at both the 2023 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship and 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

Red Sox Have Their Way with Blue Jays

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Boston’s Wilyer Abreu hit a three-run home run and SP Lucas Giolito pitched seven strong innings as the Red Sox ended a six-game losing streak by routing the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 15-1 Saturday.

Abreu’s home run came against Toronto starting pitcher Chris Bassitt in the bottom of the first inning. It was his 14th home run of the season.

Giolito (4-1) gave up one run (unearned) on six hits in seven innings. He struck out five.

Ceddanne Rafaela and Romy Gonzalez contributed two-run home runs for the Red Sox, who collected 18 hits in the victory.

Boston rookie Roman Anthony had the first three-hit game of his MLB career. Two of his three hits were doubles. Gonzalez also had three hits.

Abreu added an RBI double in the second inning, when Boston scored three times to take a 6-0 lead. The Red Sox also received a two-run single from Trevor Story in the inning.

Toronto scored in the third, when Addison Barger’s single drove in Myles Straw and cut Boston’s lead to 6-1.

The Red Sox tacked on three runs in their half of the third to increase their advantage to 9-1. The inning featured a bases-loaded walk to Abraham Toro, a sacrifice fly from Carlos Narvaez and a throwing error on catcher Alejandro Kirk that allowed Anthony to score.

Bassitt (7-4) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits in two innings.

After Nick Sogard’s RBI single drove in Story in the sixth, Rafaela’s ninth home run increased Boston’s lead to 12-1. Gonzalez produced his third homer of the season in the seventh, when Boston stretched its lead to 14-1.

The Red Sox wrapped up the scoring in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Toro that drove in Jarren Duran.

Boston entered Saturday’s matchup having scored four runs in its last three games.

Sports Biz: Mets Pop-Up

This past weekend, I attended the Strat-O-Matic event at the Mets House in New York to cover one of the final events at the Mets’ Union Square pop-up shop. The event, taking place in a city dominated by Fanatics Fest, was a wonderful reminder that sports are all about communities.

Fanatics Fest, and events like it, are driven by impressions, revenue, and spectacle, whereas the Strat-O-Matic event at the New York Mets store was purely a celebration of the game and its fans. I was there for about an hour and a half and did not have a single item pushed on me. I played Strat-O-Matic for the first time in years against a longtime fan and player (He very generously reminded me of the rules).

Our game took a backseat to our conversation about his experiences playing the game, and his love for it over the years. He told me all about the 12-person Strat-O-Matic league he has played in for the past 30 years, complete with full seasons and championship rings (which did not look dissimilar to the NFL rings that I saw at Fanatics Fest).

I happily watched him give Hal Richman, the founder of Strat-O-Matic, an honorary championship ring and tell him about the impact the game had on his life. I heard another avid player talk about his father introducing him to the game back in the 1960s and how he has been hooked ever since, so much so that he owns every single MLB set that has been released by the company.

While the setup was not fancy—a few folding tables in the back of the store, game boxes for people to take and use, and some pizza—it did not deter new and old fans of the game from swapping stories and playing head to head versus one another.

I got to meet both Hal and his son, who is the current CEO of Strat-O-Matic, and it immediately became clear to me that this type of event was perfectly in line with the SOM ethos. It is a game all about a shared love of sports and for well over 60 years has been bringing people together in communities just like this one, from local Strat-O-Matic clubs, to leagues, to friendly living room games.

In addition to the game and event, the venue was also an interesting branding initiative by the New York Mets.

The pop-up, which closed June 25th, was one of the regularly scheduled NYM special events, like player meet-and-greets and book signings, as well as regular merchandise sales. The space offered exclusive perks and benefits for fans, as well as interactive exhibitions like an augmented reality swing analysis station that many of the Strat-O-Matic players took advantage of.

While always designed to be a temporary “pop-up,” I really admired the space and thought that it was a great community-oriented brand activation that allowed for events like the Strat-O-Matic day for fans of all ages.

The Mets have been doing a lot right in the marketing department recently, and I think this was no exception.

Turner Sports Parts with NBA TV

ATLANTA – (Wire Service Report) – TNT Sports will relinquish oversight of NBA TV operations, it was announced today by TNT Sports Chair and CEO Luis Silberwasser.

After a 17-year run with TNT Sports, day-to-day operations will revert to the league on Oct. 1.

“We made several proposals to continue to provide services and operate the NBA TV network and related digital assets,” Silberwasser wrote in a memo to employees of the Warner Bros. Discovery cable unit, in a communique leaked to media. “However, we were unable to agree on a path forward that recognized the value of our expertise, quality content and operational excellence that our fans and partners have come to expect from TNT Sports.”

In July 2024, the league announced a new 11-year agreement with the Walt Disney Company, NBC Universal and Amazon Prime Video to broadcast approximately 75 games on linear television in addition to all national games being available on streaming services.

TNT will continue to generate digital content for the league through Bleacher Report and House of Highlights and maintain editorial control of the Inside the NBA studio show. The highly popular program that features Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and Ernie Johnson will be produced at Turner for air on ESPN and ABC during select game broadcasts.

Flagg Day

BROOKLYN – (Wire Service Report) – The Dallas Mavericks selected Duke phenom Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

The announcement ended a months-long buildup for the 18-year-old Flagg, who had long been projected as the top pick. The only question was which team would get a chance to take him, and the Mavericks earned that opportunity when they won the NBA Draft lottery last month despite 1.8 percent odds.

Flagg figures to quickly provide a new face of the franchise for the Mavericks, who drew ire from their fan base after trading Luke Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

The 6-foot-8, 221-pound Flagg helped guide Duke to an NCAA FInal Four appearance after averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks as a freshman. He won the Wooden Award as the nation’s best player along with taking home other honors including ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC All-Defensive Team.

The Mavericks had the No. 1 overall pick for the second time in franchise history. They also had the top selection in 1981, when they drafted Mark Aguirre out of DePaul.

After Cooper, Who’s Got Next?

BROOKLYN– (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Here is the challenge for everyone behind the Dallas Mavericks, who will invest the No. 1 pick on purported franchise centerpiece Cooper Flagg: He’s one of one.

Flagg is the top prospect available Wednesday, but the 2025 NBA Draft pool is not devoid talent.

The San Antonio Spurs pick second. They’re at a fork in the road, equipped with the assets and cap flexibility to choose their own adventure. Victor Wembanyama is already a mainstay in elite player conversations while Stephen Castle, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan round out their youth movement.

The first avenue involves disassembling their young core and surrendering their pick equity in pursuit of premier star power — assuming Giannis Antetokounmpo is amenable to such a pairing. A roster recalibration that prioritizes winning in the immediate term clutters the books with multiple max salary slots. Additionally, it reconciles with the fact that Brian Wright and Co. voluntarily accelerated their timeline by locking down De’Aaron Fox as their lead guard and designated pick and roll ball handler for the foreseeable future.

The second avenue is staying the course. Standing fully behind their current nucleus in hopes of fostering another homegrown superstar to ride shotgun next to Wemby for the long haul. The low cap figure and team control of a burgeoning star on a rookie deal could dovetail nicely into sustained success.

There is no wrong answer. After all, this type of optionality only comes by once in a blue moon.

The history of franchises falling second, or even third, in line for the league’s highest profile, franchise-altering No. 1 picks provides plenty of reassurance. Whether it be Chauncey Billups in 1997, Carmelo Anthony in 2003 or Ja Morant in 2019, the consolation prize in the wake of generational prospects has a glowing track record. 2025 proves to be no different with a three horse race for picks 2 through 4 that requires deep forethought.

Dylan Harper, PG/SG, Rutgers
Ostensibly the best player available at No. 2, Harper is a 6-foot-6 combo guard with the on-ball dynamism to flourish from day one. In many other draft classes, Harper would be No. 1 with a bullet. He has a command of the offense that is beyond his years, dictates pace with dribble creativity, and is capable of carving his way to the rim at will. With Fox and Castle penciled in as San Antonio’s backcourt of the future, the Spurs would need to redistribute the ball handling duties with the addition of Harper. Naturally, Castle would take a back seat. Harper’s long-term upside, compatibility with Wemby, and ability to pierce defenses on or off the ball may be too enticing to pass up.

Airious “Ace” Bailey, SF/SG, Rutgers
Taking away all of the off-court drama and character critique, Bailey is the best fit for a guard-heavy Spurs core. He possesses show-stopping talent that will need to be harnessed accordingly. An unambiguously elite pull-up shooter as well as a 38.7 percent 3-point shooter off the catch, Bailey’s size and skillset on the wing poses to amplify the Fox and Wemby two-man game. He can be weaponized on the second side by attacking closeouts and getting to his spots off the bounce. Additionally, Bailey has the measurables and tools to confront opposing wings defensively. In a streamlined role alongside both a perimeter and interior force, the possibilities are endless.

The trouble is, there’s no chance in the world the Spurs are willing to entertain a half-committed Bailey as the second pick in the draft if the franchise isn’t convinced he’s all in. At this point, how could they be?

V.J. Edgecombe, SG, Baylor
A preternatural athlete with eye-popping verticality and a serviceable jump shot, V.J. Edgecombe is a high-energy two-guard of the plug-and-play variety. He couples striking physical tools with dogged determination on both sides of the ball. V.J. is a highlight factory who runs the floor with abandon and detonates at the rim, complementing Fox’s transition tendencies perfectly. To top it off, Edgecombe is a day-ruining defender at the point of attack as well as away from the ball. If the Spurs see a world where he can dabble in small forward minutes with his 6-4 frame and 6-7 wingspan, he will be in the mix at No. 2.

Angels in the Afternoon

ANAHEIM – (Staff and Wire Service Report) The Boston Red Sox will send right-hander Richard Fitts to the mound Wednesday afternoon when they visit the Los Angeles Angels for the final contest of a three-game series.

It will be Fitts’ second career start against the Angels, and he’s undoubtedly hoping it turns out better than his first one.

Fitts (0-3, 4.71 ERA) took the loss when Los Angeles beat host Boston 7-6 on June 2. The Angels hit three home runs during a six-run first inning that night. Fitts exited the game after recording three outs on 39 pitches. He allowed six runs (five earned) and four hits and walked one.

Zach Neto, Mike Trout and Jo Adell hit the first-inning home runs.

Fitts was sent to Triple-A Worcester following that performance. He gave up seven earned runs on 15 hits in 12 innings for Worcester, and was recalled to Boston on Sunday after the Red Sox placed right-hander Hunter Dobbins (strained elbow) on the 15-day injured list.

“I was really focused on what I needed to work on, and the build-up was a big part of that,” Fitts told MassLive. “I was redefining my shapes of my pitches and it feels really good. I feel really confident and feel like I’m in a really good spot.

“I’m here to do whatever they need me to do. I want to pitch and help the team win.”

Fitts will try to prevent the Angels from sweeping the Red Sox. Los Angeles prevailed 9-5 on Monday and won 3-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Christian Moore, the eighth overall pick in last July’s MLB draft, hit two home runs for Los Angeles in Tuesday’s win, which extended Boston’s losing streak to four games. The Angels have a 4-1 record against the Red Sox this season.

Boston is 9-19 in one-run games and 5-9 in extra-inning games. The Red Sox are winless in six extra-inning road games.

“Losing is not fun,” Boston shortstop Trevor Story said. “Winning is fun. We have half the season to play, so to this point we’ve been one game under (.500). I think that’s the frustrating part, is we know how good we can be. We’ve shown flashes of that, but you have to find a way to do it on a more consistent basis.

“We’re gonna stay positive about it,” Story continued. “We’re not gonna give up, I know that. We know the type of team we have and I feel good about us showing that in the second half.”

Neto, the Angels’ starting shortstop, left Tuesday’s game after making an error in the ninth inning. Los Angeles bench coach Ray Montgomery said Neto jammed his right shoulder during a stolen base attempt in the eighth inning.

“It’s feeling good,” Neto said. “I mean, it’s not great. But you know, we’re gonna see how I feel (Wednesday) morning, and hopefully — hopefully — you know, I come (in) feeling great, and be back in the lineup.”

Lefty Yusei Kikuchi (2-6, 3.01) is Los Angeles’ probable starter Wednesday. Kikuchi is 0-3 with a 5.91 ERA in 42 2/3 innings over 10 career appearances against Boston. He allowed three runs in five innings when the Angels beat the Red Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on June 3.
