LOS ANGELES – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Wyndham Clark posted an even-par 70 to outlast Rory McIlroy and announce himself on the major stage, claiming the 123rd U.S. Open for the first major championship of his career on Sunday at the Los Angeles Country Club.

With a 10-under 270, Clark edged the Northern Irishman desperate to end his nine-year major drought by a single shot. Clark two-putted the 72nd hole from 60 feet for par, his winning tap-in unleashing a fount of emotion amid his celebration.

McIlroy also shot a 70 and didn’t make a birdie after the first hole, never putting enough pressure on the less experienced Clark.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (70) placed third at 7 under, Australia’s Cam Smith (67) was fourth at 6 under and Rickie Fowler shot a 75 to drop into a tie for fifth at 5 under with Tommy Fleetwood of England (63) and Min Woo Lee of Australia (67).

In his fifth full season on the PGA Tour, Clark won his first tournament last month when he beat a strong field at the Wells Fargo Championship. The 29-year-old from Denver nonetheless flew under the radar entering the week, especially after Fowler and Xander Schauffele opened the championship with the first two rounds of 62 in U.S. Open history.

After a birdie-bogey start, Clark stuck his tee shot at the par-3 fourth to 5 feet and his approach at the par-4 sixth to 4 1/2 feet, converting both birdies to reach 12 under. At the par-5 eighth, he couldn’t punch out of some grass nearly as tall as him on the first try and wound up with a bogey.

The par-3 ninth was the first of five enormous par saves in a row before the pivotal 14th. He gave an emphatic fist pump as a 7-foot par putt dropped.

McIlroy made a messy bogey at the par-5 14th hole and Clark followed behind him with a birdie, effectively a two-shot swing that gave Clark a three-shot cushion with four holes to play.

Fowler holds the 54-hole lead/co-lead for the 10th time on Tour and the first time in a major. He is only 2-for-9 to date in converting into victory.

Clark holds the lead/co-lead for the third time in individual stroke-play events on Tour and the first time in a major. Overall, he is 1-for-2 to date in converting into victory.

Four-time major champion and World No. 3 McIlroy opened his 15th U.S. Open with three rounds in the 60s for the fifth time. He went on to win three of the previous four times he accomplished that feat.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler holed out from 196 yards for eagle on the par-4 17th then followed with a birdie on No. 18 for a 2-under (68). He trails the leaders by three strokes after 54 holes.

This week marks just the third time in the last 20 years that two of the top three players in the world rankings will be in the Top 4 on the leaderboard entering the final round of the U.S. Open. The others: 2006 – Phil Mickelson/Vijay Singh and then 2022 – Scheffler/Jon Rahm).

History Lesson: The eventual champion has been within four shots of the lead heading into the final round of the last 24 U.S. Open tournaments.

The largest come-from-behind victory in the final round of the U.S. Open is seven strokes, an accomplishment by the great Arnold Palmer in 1960.

No. 15 played at 80 yards in the third round, making it the shortest par-3 in U.S. Open history.

LOS ANGELES – Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick earned his first PGA TOUR title at the 2022 U.S. Open, becoming the first player to do so in a major since Danny Willett at the 2016 Masters Tournament. The last player to successfully defend a major championship title was Brooks Koepka at the 2019 PGA Championship.

Koepka is also the last player to win the U.S. Open in back-to-back years (2017, 2018). Fitzpatrick, who won the RBC Heritage earlier this season, enters the week at No. 28 in the FedEx Cup standings.

The 2023 U.S. Open is the first major championship held at The Los Angeles Country Club and will be contested on the North Course. The first edition of the Los Angeles Open, now known as The Genesis Invitational, was held at LACC (North) in 1926, and the event has been held there a total of five times (1926, 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940). The last major championship played in the Los Angeles area was the 1995 PGA Championship, held at The Riviera Country Club, the host venue of The Genesis Invitational.

2021 U.S. Open winner Jon Rahm enters the week as the FedExCup leader with four wins this season, including the Masters Tournament. With a win this week, Rahm would become the first player to win five times in a season since Justin Thomas in 2016-17 and the first to win multiple majors in the same year since Jordan Spieth in 2015 (Masters, U.S. Open). With 3,042 FedExCup points so far this season, Rahm has the fifth-highest total in a single FedExCup Regular Season since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007. He is 17 points behind No. 4 (Tiger Woods/2013) and 1,127 behind No. 1 (Jordan Spieth/2014-15).

The 2011 U.S. Open winner and reigning FedEx Cup Champion Rory McIlroyhas won four majors (2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship, 2014 PGA Championship) but none since the start of the 2014-15 season. McIlroy has 18 Top-10s in majors since his most recent title, the most of any player in that span.

McIlroy is making his 48th start in a major and 33rd since winning the 2014 PGA Championship.

There are four players in the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking that have not won a major: No. 4 Patrick Cantlay, No. 5 Viktor Hovland, No. 6 Xander Schauffele and No. 7 Max Homa. Those four players have combined for 25 PGA Tour titles and have all won at least twice since the start of the 2021-22 season.

BROOKLINE – Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick, the two highest-ranked players in the Official World Golf Ranking without a win on the PGA Tour, share the lead at the U.S. Open entering today’s final round.

Last player to earn first PGA Tour win at a major championship was Danny Willett, at the 2016 Masters while the last player to earn first PGA Tour win at the U.S. Open was Graeme McDowell in 2010.

At the recent PGA Championship, Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick both entered the final round T-2. Fitzpatrick played in the final pairing and finished T-5 while Zalatoris went on to lose in a playoff.

Fitzpatrick won the 2013 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club.

Defending champion Jon Rahm made a double bogey at No. 18 and will enter the final round one stroke back. The last player to successfully defend title at a major championship was Brooks Koepka, 2019 PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler (T-4), Sam Burns (T-7) and Rory McIlroy (T-7), who have combined for nine TOUR wins this season, are within three strokes of the lead.

36-hole leader Collin Morikawa carded a 7-over (77), tying his highest score on the PGA Tour, his second score of (77) in his last four rounds on Tour.

BROOKLINE – Adam Hadwin recorded a 4-under (66), his lowest score in a major championship, and leads the U.S. Open by one stroke after 18 holes while Rory McIlroy, winner of last week’s RBC Canadian Open, stands T-2.

The last player to win on Tour and win a major the following week was, indeed, McIlroy, at the 2014 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship the next weekend.

Five of the six players at T-2 or better (all but McIlroy) earned spots in the U.S. Open via Final Qualifying.

BROOKLINE – Early tee-times at 6:45am in the ‘burbs of Boston, and the beautiful golf course at The Country Club. From Newton to Chestnut Hill to Brookline, the traffic will be horrendous. More importantly, the golf will be great.

Theoretically, a connected sports fan could be watching the U.S. Open in the morning, zip over to Fenway Park for the 1:35pm afternoon start, then head over to the North End, grab a bite of pasta and catch the Boston Celtics vs Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of The NBA Finals. Rough day for a Boston sports fan, eh?

On the links, 2021 U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm will tee-off at 7:18am as he is the first player from Spain to be in title defense of any U.S. Open championship.

The last players to win on Tour, then win a Major was Rory McIlroy in 2014 when he won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and then the PGA Championship. As winner of last week’s RBC Canadian, McIlroy can do it again at the U.S. Open.

Vermont-born, Massachusetts-reared and New York-schooled (St. John’s),Keegan Bradley threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park on Tuesday night before the Red Sox vs Oakland Athletics game. Bradley won the PGA Championship in 2011. When he stepped to the mound at historic Fenway, he threw a strike and was on the field for a $25,000 presentation to First Tee of Massachusetts by the USGA.

SAN DIEGO – Spain’s Jon Rahm won his first major title with a one shot victory over South African Louis Oosthuizen at the 121st United States Open Golf Championship at Torrey Pines. The victory was particularly sweet, coming on Father’s Day, for the father of a newborn son.

Rahm tied for the best score in the field Sunday, with Patrick Reed and Branden Grace also shooting (67s).

Oosthuizen has won one major (2010 British Open) and he now has six runner-up spots in majors. That list includes tying for second at last month’s PGA Championship.

To defeat the South African, Rahm closed with two incredible pressure putts on 17 and 18 to earn the win. He won a cool $2,250,000 to start his son’s college fund. Not bad for the man who tested positive for COVID-19+ when he was six strokes up at the recent Memorial Golf Tournament and had to withdraw. Rahm cleared protocol for the U.S. Open with two days to spare.

Harris English finished third at 3 under, with his final-round (68) the only sub-70 score of the tournament. On Sunday, he had bogeys on three of the first four holes, but played the last five holes in 3 under.

Brooks Koepka (69), Collin Morikawa (70) and Italy’s Guido Migliozzi (68) were at 2 under to share fourth place.

Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler shot identical (283) for (-1) and T-7. Go figure.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau was two shots off the lead when the day began and was 2 under for the round through eight holes. He melted down and fell out of contention, playing Nos. 11-17 in 8 over to shoot a final round (77). His quadruple-bogey 8 on No. 17 was the ultimate damage. He finished T-26.

Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau can become the eighth player to successfully defend U.S. Open title. He is only two strokes back.

U.S. Open at Torrey Pines: Notebook for Round 3

A month after his first European Tour win in his 478th start, 48-year-old Richard Bland became the oldest player to take a 36-hole lead/co-lead in the U.S. Open.

Russell Henley took the outright lead with birdie at his 17th hole, but dropped back into a tie after his only bogey of the day on his final hole.

Following his runner-up finish at the 2020 U.S. Open, Matthew Wolff enters the weekend just one stroke back.

Making his 15th U.S. Open start, Bubba Watson (T5/-3) made five birdies in a six-hole stretch on his outgoing nine to shoot a 4-under (67). Watson’s lone Top-10 finish, a T-5, came in his second start in the event in 2007. He missed the cut at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines after opening with back-to-back 77s.

San Diego native Xander Schauffele (T-7) at (-2) followed a 2-under (69) in round one with an even-par (71). He’s finished inside the Top-10 in each previous U.S. Open start (T-5/2017, T-6/2018, T-3/2019, 5th/2020).

U.S. Open at Torrey Pines: Round 2 Notebook

Russell Henley carded his sixth career score of (67) or better in a major championship and his first since the 2018 PGA Championship (65/R-2). To date, Henley’s best finish in 26 career major championship appearances was a T-11 at the 2017 Masters Tournament.

Louis Oosthuizen is one of three players to finish in the Top 10 at the U.S. Open in 2019 (T-7) and 2020 (3rd). The others were Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele. He is currently T-1 with Henley at (-4) but is only through 16 holes in R-1.

Brooks Koepka shot 2-under (69) and he extended his tournament-record streak of rounds in the 60s to six and now ties Sam Snead for most consecutive sub-par rounds in tournament history (6).
