FENWAY – (Wire Service Report) – Boston’s Wilyer Abreu hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats as the Red Sox won their 11th straight game and swept a day-night doubleheader, defeating the visiting first place Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Friday night.

Abreu cranked a two-run homer — the first of back-to-back shots with Willson Contreras — in the first inning before leading off the third with a go-ahead solo blast.

The victory came in a bullpen game for Boston, with six relievers combining to 6 2/3 scoreless innings with four hits behind Eduardo Rivera, who allowed three runs over the first 2 1/3 innings.

Greg Weissert (2-2) earned the win, while Aroldis Chapman pitched a clean ninth for his 20th save. Boston relievers faced the minimum over the final three innings.

Junior Caminero, who hit a solo home run in the third, and Jonny DeLuca both had multi-hit games for Tampa Bay.

The Rays scored a pair of two-out runs to jump out to a first-inning lead, forcing Rivera to throw 36 total pitches after the first two batters were retired on five. A Caminero single and two walks in succession loaded the bases for DeLuca to knock a two-run single past diving Boston shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng.

However, the visitors’ lead did not last long. After Ceddanne Rafaela hit a one-out double down the left field line, Abreu cleared the right-center-field bullpen for a game-tying two-run homer, and Contreras flipped the scoreboard with a solo shot over the Green Monster in the next at-bat.

The long ball trend continued for both teams in the third. Caminero knotted the score again with a one-out solo shot just inside the left field foul pole, but Abreu deposited the second pitch of the bottom half of the frame to deep right-center to put Boston back in front 4-3.

Tampa Bay starter Mason Englert (0-3) retired the next three batters after Caleb Durbin was caught stealing and then got two outs in the fourth, but the Red Sox expanded their lead as Cheng walked and scored from first on Anthony Seigler’s two-out double off the base of the wall in the right field corner.

Boston’s bullpen did the rest. After Weissert recorded the final two outs of the third, Jovani Moran had the longest outing of the bunch, throwing back-to-back 1-2-3 innings.

The Rays’ stable of relievers was also strong. Craig Kimbrel, Cole Sulser and Cam Booser did not allow a hit over three innings behind Englert, who was tagged for eight hits and five runs across the first five frames.

FENWAY – (Wire Service Preview) – The Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays certainly hope their players had a restful MLB All-Star break.

It will be a busy return to play for the American League East rivals on Friday as they begin a four-game, three-day series with a day-night doubleheader in Boston. The Red Sox return to play with a nine-game winning streak that has brought them only a half-game outside the playoff picture.

Since a July 1 loss to the Washington Nationals, the Red Sox rolled to three straight road sweeps against the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and New York Mets before the break. Incredibly, interim manager Chad Tracy’s club allowed more than two runs in only one of those nine games, including a pair of shutouts.

“When you’re winning, everything is good,” All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman said.

The Red Sox got timely hitting in Sunday’s final game in New York, winning when trailing after eight innings for the first time this season. Boston scored twice in the ninth to tie the game at 2-2 and Anthony Seigler delivered the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning.

Brayan Bello, who was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to join the bullpen, threw 4 1/3 crucial innings while piggybacking starter Payton Tolle to set the stage for the late-game combination of Chapman and Garrett Whitlock.

It was a good stretch, but important games are ahead. It all starts with the division-leading Rays, who have won four straight and five of the first six head-to-head meetings between the teams this season.

Heading into the break, Tracy’s message was simple.

“Let’s make sure we’re ready to go coming out of the break,” he said. “Do what needs to be done over the break to physically and mentally not let it slip too far from your mind. Make sure we’re ready.”

Tampa Bay went 13-5 in an 18-game span before the All-Star break, splitting a four-game set against the New York Yankees before taking two of three from the Seattle Mariners. Despite the latter series ending with an 8-2 loss, the Rays still boast the best record in the AL by three games.

Manager Kevin Cash had a scare during Tuesday’s All-Star Game. All-Star third baseman Junior Caminero was hit on the finger by a 97-mph pitch in the third inning, but appears to have avoided a major injury as the unofficial second half of the season begins.

“In the moment, I was just scared, right?” Caminero said through an interpreter. “Kind of in that situation, right there in the moment, you’re thinking the worst, and I honestly thought something might have been broken. But look, thank you to God that everything’s fine, and now it’s just a little bit sore, but we’re all good.”

Rumors have swirled that the Rays plan to be aggressive at the trade deadline in a few weeks, with Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal being among the targets.

“Know that (Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander) will do everything he can to improve our club, like he always does,” Cash said. “Definitely appreciative of the guys that are here right now and feel like we’ve got a very strong group with us right now.”

The Rays have righty Griffin Jax (5-6, 3.47 ERA) taking the ball against Red Sox southpaw Jake Bennett (4-3, 2.64) in Friday’s opening game. Neither team has announced a pitcher for the nightcap.

Jax has won four of his last five starts, with the lone loss coming in a July 6 outing against the Yankees in which he struck out 10 over five innings. He pitched five innings of one-run ball to beat the Mariners in his last start on Saturday.

Jax will look to turn around his career fortunes against the Red Sox, having posted a 0-1 record and 6.75 ERA in 15 career appearances. Only two of them have been starts, including a four-inning no-decision (two earned runs on four hits) on May 7 this season at Fenway Park.

The 25-year-old Bennett has won three straight starts, working at least seven innings in back-to-back victories over the Angels and White Sox. He held the Chicago to four hits over seven scoreless frames on July 8.

Bennett has lost two starts against the Rays this season, however, going 0-2 with a 6.97 ERA in 10 1/3 innings.

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Cody Bellinger drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single to help the visiting New York Yankees extend their winning streak to six  by beating the Boston Red Sox 4-2 Thursday night.

Bellinger singled against reliever Greg Weissert with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning. The hit, which drove in Jazz Chisholm and Trent Grisham, put the Yankees in front 3-2.

BOSTON – What better way is there to chronicle the 2026 Opening Day at Fenway Park than with a patented TL timeline? It’s the San Diego Padres in town for a three-game set against the hometeam.

Here we go:

10:00am – By pure luck, your fave columnist departed his suburban Boston home at the exact same time our beloved neighbor (Tuckie’s Dad) was driving over to work and passing by the ballpark. Nice!

10:45am – Second in line for credential check-in (which is usually pretty long on Opening Day), and it took all of two minutes. The good news was that the Press Gate (D) opened at 8:45am.

10:47am – Shared an elevator ride for two with my favorite WBZ-TV sports reporter Dan Roche and we chatted “winter” for a while, and his take was the surprise that kept him working the New England Patriots’ beat until the Super Bowl in February, then right to Spring Training. … “Vrabel,” we both said in unison.

10:49am – The first person we saw, as we walked down the press box corridor was former NESN/Sox broadcaster Don Orsillo, who was let go by the locals but quickly hooked-up with the Padres back in 2016. The Melrose, Mass. native now lives in Coronado, California. That’s an upgrade.

11:00am – Settled into my usual press box seat but immediately thought of Red Sox Official Scorer Mike Shalin, my New York and St. John’s compadre who passed away at the age of 66 (back in December, 2020). Mike wrote for the NY Post, the Boston Herald and UPI/Sports Exchange wire services and thus contributed to Digital Sports Desk via the wire for many years. Known for his gregarious ways and encyclopedic knowledge of baseball and all sports NYC, Mike was diagnosed with brain cancer just months before his passing. He welcomed me to the Red Sox “Bresh Box” with open arms and we had a few laughs – many subtle jokes about New York, The Garden and every National Anthem singer. When I was first credentialed to cover the Sox, Mike introduced me to pretty much every person in the press box. Amazing guy, and I miss him greatly.

11:30am – The Red Sox organization treats the media to “free lunch” on Opening Day, a treat that saves us $12 from the normal fee (which is quite fair, considering the usual three course meals, complete with New England clam chowder, locally grown vegetables (on the Fenway Rooftops) in the summer. It’ll be a break “in the action” for 20-30 minutes while the Sox take batting practice.

11:45am – Enjoyed lunch with Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy as we go back to when Dan started on the Celtics beat in the early ‘80s. We enjoyed catching up, talking friends and family. We also discussed the untimely closing of Fenway Johnnies, sister bar/restaurant to West End Johnnies – a block from TD Garden. Sadly, Fenway didn’t make it ‘til Opening Day after a long, slow winter.

12 Noon-1:45pm – Down time used to do some writing and catch-up on email, calls.

1:43pm – Texts from family that they’re in their seats and ready for the festivities (after a little lunch at Eastern Standard). ES has the best food around the ballpark.

2:00pm – Introductions of the two teams, with San Diego first, of course and a nice ovation for former Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts. The home team was introduced to much applause, then a stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Nic Taylor.

At precisely 2:00pm, the sun came out, and the press box windows opened to provide light and sound. What a difference it makes. It’s also somewhat humid, and the heaters are on.

At 2:01pm, I realized just how lucky we all are to be at Fenway Park to open the 2026 Baseball season here in Boston. I also wondered, “what will this summer bring?” And, “will we be here in October when the days are short and the temperature drop?”

2:10pm – The 1986 American League champion Red Sox are introduced (as a group) after they walked out from the Green Monster. Ceremonial first pitch and we’re ready to play ball. Nice job. The festivities are running late for the scheduled 2:10 first pitch.

2:21pm – First pitch of the season by Sonny Gray to Fernando Tatis, Jr. (foul ball). Then Tatis grounds out to Trevor Story at shortstop.

2:22pm – Speaking of shortstop, batting second, San Diego SS Xander Bogaerts is introduced to a rousing standing ovation that gained steam as it went along, almost forcing Bogaerts to step out of the batter’s box and tip his batting helmet.

2:25pm – Gray retired the Padres in order. we’ll pick this up when there’s something newsworthy to report/journal.

2:40pm – Boston 1B Willson Contreras gets the nod in the first ABS challenge in Fenway Park’s MLB history. Ball was a 1/4-inch outside and Contreras took first base only to be doubled up minutes later.

2:50pm – The Red Sox score their first run of the 2026 season when Ceddanne Rafaela singles-in Marcelo Mayer who had led off the inning with a double to left center field. (Red Sox 1-0, after 3 innings).

3:09pm – The shadows of October are here at Fenway in early April, too. Sunlight tossing shadow right across home plate to Sonny Gray’s benefit.

3:23pm – The Sox manufacture another run with a Jarren Duran leadoff double, and a Caleb Durbin base hit. Durbin was 0-19 going into today.

3:45pm – Former Red Sox reliever and Houston Astros legendary closer, Joe Sambito stopped by the press box to do a half-inning of TV and meet the press. He was great. Little known fact, Joe was a legend at Bethpage High School on Long Island and a member of “the family” via his younger brother Bobby, a lifelong friend of this column.

3:45pm – The San Diego Padres got to Sonny Gray for two runs in the visiting half of the 5th inning, 2-2.

3:50pm – Willson Contreras homers, 423-feet, to deep center field, 3-2, Sox at the end of six innings.

3:55pm – After a Wilyer Abreu single, second baseman Marcelo Mayer clocked a 385-foot drive into the Red Sox bullpen to give Boston a 5-2 lead. SD reliever Wandy Peralta might need some tips from Joe Sambito.

4:25pm – With the sun shadows reaching the pitcher’s mound, we get the very first “Sweet Caroline” of the ‘26 season, marking the middle of the 8th inning break.

A regular observation of the Fenway Park crowd? Not a single soul has left the building. Yes, a sell-out crowd of 36,233 is enjoying every last second of this ballgame.

4:31pm – Cue the light show, as Sox closer Aroldis Chapman enters the game to close-out the Padres as the visitors bat in the 9th inning. Again, NOT a SOUL has left Fenway Park. It’s amazing.

The obligatory “Yankees Suck” chants reverberate throughout the park.

Chapman has his “stuff” and blew one past Jackson Merrill at 97 mph. Two outs.

4:38pm – Chapman falls behind, 3-1, in the count, then gets it to full count, as the crowd erupts. He throws a ball to walk Manny Machado.

4:41pm – Ramon Laureano flies out to Roman Anthony in right field and the ball game is OV-AH. (5-2, Sox). Chapman gets his first save of 2026, Weissert and Slaten get the “holds” while starter Sonny Gray wins his first of the season.

Cue the Dropkicks, a tradition of playing “Tessie” by the Dropkick Murphys, followed by the old fave of “Jeremiah was a Bullfrog,” a.k.a. “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night.

4:48pm – Kevin Foley, my brother of summer from the Red Sox media relations staff, closes the press box windows on a gorgeous afternoon to close out the Sox victory and this play-by-play of a great day at Fenway.

Not once do I take this ballpark, The Garden in New York, or Wrigley Field in Chicago for granted. All three are Heaven on Earth.

BOSTON – (Staff Report) – In mid-September baseball with a postseason berth on the line, lethargic, pathetic, error-filled and one run producing baseball is not the remedy for a win. Not in the opening game, an important game in an important three-game, weekend series for the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees – on September 12th.

The Red Sox game line read: 1 – 2 – 3 … that’s one run, two hits and three errors. The final score? New York 4, Boston 1.

How is it possible to compete while going hitless through six innings at Fenway Park – a bandbox full of run producing delicacies.

Not tonight.

The first glitch was Sox starter Lucas Giolito grooving a 92-mph four seamer down the Mass Turnpike which New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge whacked 468-feet, at the least, for a 1-0 NYY lead in the first inning.

Judge’s homer was his 362 career HR, passing the legendary Joe DiMaggio for the fourth most homers in New York Yankees franchise history. Judge trails only Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536) and Lou Gehrig (493) in NYY franchise home runs.

Judge’s first inning homer also marked the 46th Yankees homer in the opening frame, leading the Majors this season and tying the Cincinnati Reds of 2019 for second-most of any team in the last 75 years. Only the Atlanta Braves are ahead of New York when the Braves concluded the season with 47 in 2023.

Sox bats were asleep at the wheel.

Besides the lackluster effort at the plate, the Red Sox also put a final boxscore in the Elias Sports Bureau records that tallied – let us count the ways – 1). A catcher’s interference error by Carlos Narvaez led directly to NY right-fielder Cody Bellinger’s base hit to allow Judge to score the second run. That was 2-zip, after three.

Fielding and throwing errors?  Sox second baseman David Hamilton scratched out both.

It was all too much to overcome Luis Gil’s no-hit effort through six innings pitched. Gil allowed no hits, no runs while walking four and striking out four. After the six innings and 93 pitches (54 strikes), Gil gave way to RHP Fernando Cruz who lost the team no hitter when Boston right fielder Nate Eaton homered to left field in the seventh inning (3-1, NY).

It all added up to Boston losing the second straight game, losing their seventh game of the last 10 at Fenway Park (since 8-17-25) which comes after winning nine of the previous 10 games in Boston (July 26-to-August 16.

Gil was credited with the win and is (4-1) on the season while Giolito (10-4) took the loss. New York’s reliever, David Bednar, earned his 23rd save of the season.

Interestingly, Giolito is now (5-1) in his last seven home starts, pitching at an incredible 0.80 ERA. He has allowed only one or zero earned runs over 5.2 IP in those seven games. Over his last 17 starts, Giolito is (9-3) with a 2.29 ERA and a .211 opponent batting average.

That wasn’t good enough for tonight and the Red Sox will now rely upon RHP Brayan Bello (11-6) to pitch Saturday and ace LHP Garrett Crochet (15-5) to throw vs. New York on Sunday. The Yankees will counter with ace LHP Max Fried (16-5) on Saturday and RHP Will Warren (8-6) to go Sunday.

The Yankees are now a game and a half ahead of Boston in the AL East standings with the same lead in the American League Wild Card race. Seattle holds the final Wild Card slot and leads the Texas Rangers by 1.5 games.

Boston completed a three-game sweep by beating the visiting Houston Astros 6-1 on Sunday, running its winning streak to five games. The Red Sox have registered seven victories in their past eight games overall.

“I feel like we’re kind of figuring out our identity a little bit,” Red Sox outfielder Rob Refsnyder said. “Guys are settling into their roles. The trade deadline has passed and it’s go time.”

Center fielder/second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela added: “Our mindset is not only on the Yankees, it’s just playing good baseball and trying to win the division.”

Boston has won its past five home games. The Red Sox are 12-1 in their last 13 home contests, and they own a 37-21 record at Fenway Park this season, the third-highest home win total in the majors.

“We’re much better than the last two years,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “We’re healthier. … We have a complete team. Guys are playing with an edge now. You can tell. Like I said, this place (Fenway Park) — it’s fun. It’s fun again.

“We just have to continue. Kansas City is playing good baseball. We have to show up (Monday) and try to win a game.”

The victory gave Kansas City two wins in the three-game series at Toronto. The Royals have won four of their past five games and each of their past four series.

The Royals will not have Steven Cruz available in the near future. The right-handed reliever, who left the Saturday game against the Blue Jays after feeling discomfort in his right shoulder, was placed on the 15-day injured list before the Sunday contest. Cruz has a 3.61 ERA in 42 1/3 innings (43 games) this season.

BOSTON – The kids are running the bases after Boston’s 6-1 victory and series sweep of the Houston Astros today. They might as well, as the base paths are clear and clean. Aside from Carlos Correa‘s home run in the 4th inning, the ‘Stros only had three base runners and not one reached third base against Boston’s starter Lucas Giolito.

Giolito (8-2) had his most successful and deepest outing of 2025, going eight innings and allowing only the three hits and one walk. He struck out four Houston batters as he threw a 103 pitches (67 strikes). Since June 10th, he’s won seven games and dropped only one (at Chicago Cubs, July 18). Giolito’s eight innings were the deepest he’s gone in a game since August 9th of the 2021 season.

And, get this?

The Red Sox gave him a full blast-off of run support, all coming in a six run fourth inning when Houston starter and club ace Framber Valdez simply imploded. The six-run rally started with a Roman Anthony double to left center field, then Valdez walked Romy Gonzalez. From there, Valdez committed a balk, threw a wild pitch, threw a pitch that caused Houston catcher Yanier Diaz to be charged with a passed ball and allowed Boston’s Trevor Story, Ceddanne Rafaela and Abraham Toro to hit consecutive singles before Valdez made an error on a soft grounder up the middle.

The fourth inning saw all the scoring in the game, starting as a 1-0 lead for the Astros but finishing with a 6-1 lead for the Sox.

Valdez had his own 10-game win streak broken, dating back to May 7. During that 10-game span, Valdez posted a 1.84 ERA, struck out 104 batters and kept his opponents to a .202 batting average.

Over in the home dugout, Boston is now 11 games over the .500 mark (62-51), as they’ve won seven of their last eight games, including five in a row (two vs. Minnesota; three vs. Houston). Today, August 3, 2025 marks the first time Boston is 11 games over .500 since June 26, 2022.

The reason? Boston pitchers have allowed only six earned runs over the last four games for a 1.46 ERA.

Houston has lost the three straight games vs Boston, but have dropped eight of their last 10 games.

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) -LA’s Teoscar Hernandez hit a two-run home run to help the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Boston Red Sox 5-2 Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

After Freddie Freeman singled to open the eighth inning, Hernandez homered against Boston reliever Jorge Alcala to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 5-2. It was his 15th home run of the season. Hernandez drove in three of Los Angeles’ five runs.

Freeman, Will Smith and Andy Pages each collected two hits in the victory, but Shohei Ohtani failed to homer for the sixth straight game. Ohtani went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Emmet Sheehan (2-1) pitched the first five innings for Los Angeles. He surrendered two runs on three hits, struck out five and walked two. The Dodgers’ bullpen provided four scoreless innings, including a scoreless ninth from Ben Casparius.

The Red Sox had runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but Casparius retired Rob Refsnyder on a grounder to second to end the game. It was his first major league save.

Boston starting pitcher Brayan Bello (6-5) was pulled with one out in the sixth. He gave up three runs on six hits, struck out five and walked two.

The Red Sox were limited to five hits: doubles by Connor Wong, Alex Bregman and Trevor Story, and singles by Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida.

The Dodgers grabbed a 3-0 lead by scoring a run in the second and two in the third. Pages made it 1-0 when he scored from third on Tommy Edman’s infield single. It was 2-0 after Ohtani scored when Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk, and Smith scored on a Pages sacrifice fly to give Los Angeles a 3-0 advantage.

The Red Sox sliced their deficit to 3-2 by scoring twice in the bottom of the third. Wong doubled and scored on a Duran single, and then Bregman drove in Duran with a double.

The teams meet again this evening and Sunday afternoon for the three-game set before the Dodgers travel to Cincinnati and the Red Sox hit the road again for a trip to the Twin Cities.

BOSTON – (Staff and Wire Service Report) – Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s seventh-inning grand slam sparked a Cincinnati comeback as the visiting Reds defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-4 in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday night.

Encarnacion-Strand joined Tyler Stephenson, Gavin Lux and Matt McLain with multiple hits for the Reds, who erased a 3-0 deficit by scoring five in the seventh and three in the eighth. They remain the lone major league team that has not been swept this season.

Despite trailing for most of his outing, Cincinnati right-hander Nick Martinez (6-8) wound up working 6 2/3 innings in his second straight winning start. He allowed four runs on nine hits and no walks with two strikeouts.

Boston errors helped fuel both of the Reds’ big innings, which included seven of their 12 total hits. Stephenson led off both frames with singles.

In the seventh, Stephenson reached second on Red Sox third baseman Abraham Toro’s fielding error on a Rece Hinds fielder’s choice before Lux walked to load the bases. Encarnacion-Strand then crushed a 439-foot slam to deep center.

The Reds continued the inning against Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert (2-3) with a one-out double from TJ Friedl, who scored on Elly De La Cruz’s two-out single.

Trevor Story went 3-for-4, Ceddanne Rafaela had two hits and Wilyer Abreu (home run) and Romy Gonzalez each had two RBIs for Boston, which won the first two games of the series.

Back-to-back doubles by Marcelo Mayer and Gonzalez pulled the Red Sox within 5-4 in the seventh. Gonzalez, though, was thrown out trying to take third, as left fielder Austin Hays fielded the ball high off the Green Monster.

After Stephenson’s single in the eighth, a fielder’s choice, a walk and an Encarnacion-Strand single loaded the bases ahead of Santiago Espinal’s RBI hit to right. Friedl then reached on shortstop Story’s error, turning a fielder’s choice into two runs.

Rafaela gave Boston a lead in the second, doubling to deep center field and reaching third on Friedl’s fielding error before scoring on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly.

Red Sox opener Brennan Bernardino (1 2/3 innings) and the duo of Jorge Alcala (1 1/3 innings) and Chris Murphy (2 2/3 innings) allowed Boston’s lead to stand up through two-thirds of a bullpen game. The trio allowed three hits and no runs through the first 5 2/3 innings.

Right fielder Hinds took a likely extra-base hit away from Duran to end the fifth, but he just missed grabbing Abreu’s two-out, two-run homer into the first row of the corner seats in the sixth. Story’s third hit of the game set the table as Boston’s lead increased to three.

Encarnacion-Strand was a late lineup addition after the Reds scratched Spencer Steer, whose right hand was swollen from getting hit by a pitch Wednesday afternoon during the completion of a game suspended Tuesday night.

BOSTON – We’ve endured a long winter, but when a deep and dark December turned to the New Year, we started to count down the days until Pitchers and Catchers reported to Spring Training at Little Fenway, down in Fort Myers, Florida. There were 42 days to tear off the wall calendar, from January 1st to February 12th. It seemed to last a lifetime.

Then, it came. The equipment truck left Jersey Street. The veteran players began to arrive – early. Then it was official. Spring Training opened and soon after – February 17th to be exact – the entire squad was stretching and jogging/ jogging and stretching in the Florida sun.

Soon after there were exhibition games and not so much later came the opening day for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs way over in Toyko, Japan. It was set your alarm for real games. There were more on March 27 when everyone except the Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays were throwing out the first pitch of the 2025 season.

Today, it’s Boston turn to host a Major League Baseball game in 2025. The St. Louis Cardinals are in Boston for a three game series and today, at ten after two o’clock, Walker Buehler will throw a baseball as the starting pitcher for the ‘25 Red Sox. A half-inning later, Erick Fedde will take the mound – the cool kids call it ‘the bump’ – and we’ll all see what this hometown baseball team is all about.

The Red Sox limped home yesterday after a seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record, somewhat respectable considering an opening day win was sandwiched with a current two-game winning streak but in between were four losses, three to the tough as nails Texas Rangers and one to the equally talented Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles and the New York Yankees – once again – are probably the two teams in the American League East standing between the Red Sox and postseason play, but it’s a long way until September when the days are shorter, cooler and the scoreboard watching begins.

Opening Day for the Red Sox begins with a number of storylines.

First and most important is the fact there’s a new third baseman and a new designated hitter for the Sox. Alex Bregman, a gold glove defender, is manning the hot corner which forced Boston manager Alex Cora to name longtime third baseman, Rafael Devers, as the club’s DH. Devers was none too happy and his .111 batting average (3 for 27) with 16 strike-outs tells that tale.

Devers did rip a double down the line at Camden Yards to break his slow start and he scored twice in Baltimore, so his horrible start has nowhere to go but up. Bregman, Wilyer Abreu and rookie Christian Campbell are the bright lights for the offense, as of today and, newly acquired and highly rewarded ($) starting pitcher Garrett Crochet (ERA 1.38) might become the ace that Cora needed.

The Sox faithful might’ve been too far ahead with visions of division titles dancing in their heads during Spring Training. The Red Sox finished 81-81 last season, third in the AL East, and they were five games back of a wild card spot. Now, they’re a half-game back of that pace, but it’s far too early to make any real, keen judgements on this club.

Too many questions remain, and they include:

Can Campbell keep up the pace and be a legit contender for AL Rookie of the Year?

Can Crochet win 20 games and strikeout 200+ batters along the way?

Can the likes of Buehler, Tanner Houck, Richard Fitts, and Sean Newcomb morph into a successful starting rotation while Garrett Whitlock, Arnoldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and a few others hold down a promising and improved bullpen?

Cora said Thursday that pitchers Lucas Giolito (hamstring) and Brayan Bello (shoulder) are “not close” to returning as they sit on the club’s 15-day injured list. Reliever Liam Hendricks (elbow injury and also on the IL) has been throwing at a 120-foot distance, a good sign for April 4th. Kutter Crawford (patellar tendinopathy, a fancy name for tendinitis) is also on the IL with an injury that’s bothered him since his third start of 2024.

Today, the Red Sox begin a stretch of 14 of 20 games to be played at Fenway from April 4-24 and add ton that the fact Boston will play 30 of 48 games (from 4/4-5/25) at Fenway, where Bregman should be a “double machine” and Devers will have comfortable confines to raise his batting average and home run count to normal range.

We’ll see today whether Campbell can perform well after a standing ovation from the Fenway faithful greets him upon introductions and for his first home at bat. And, we’ll also watch Abreu batting as he leads the American League in batting average at .471 – not too shabby, eh?

Otherwise, Boston will do what it does best – throw a party at Fenway which will honor the late, great Luis Tiant and his 1975 teammates while ushering in a 63-degree New England spring day.
